Naomi Klein: From Think Tanks to Battle Tanks

Naomi Klein discusses how we currently only lack the confidence to enact "deep democracy":

'Is Another World Possible?' That was the theme of this year's annual meeting of the American Sociological Association that was held in New York City this past weekend.

"We did not lose the battles of ideas. We were not outsmarted and we were not out-argued,” journalist and author Naomi Klein said.
“We lost because we were crushed. Sometimes we were crushed by army tanks, and sometimes we were crushed by think tanks. And by think tanks I mean the people who are paid to think by the makers of tanks."

Camp Pelosi, Pacific Heights San Francisco

As the fourth anniversay of the war in Iraq approaches, members of the Ghandi Peace Brigade and Code Pink have been holding vigil outside of Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco residence demanding that the Speaker of the House stop funding the war. These activists have taken refuge on the corner of Broadway and Normandie in Pacific Heights urging the passage of HR 508, the Out of Iraq Bill introduced by Rep. Lynn Woolsey and to defeat the upcoming $100 billion supplemental funding bill forthe wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Late afternoon on March 13th, San Francisco police ordered that Camp Pelosi tear down their tent but the activists are holding strong and are refusing to leave. "We can not have business as usual.", said Rene of Code Pink, "as long as she is funding the war she is NOT representing us. We are going to hold court in the street until the vote happens. COME JOIN US! Stop the warfunding and perhaps prevent the potential attack on Iran. WE NEED YOU!"

The vigil is at Pelosi's house at 2640 Broadway (between Scott & Divisadero) in San Francisco.  Call (415) 260-1120 to reach activists Leslie and Toby at the camp.
