What is going on?

Back in October I noticed a YouTube video advertising TR, along with another video advertising Kira’s return. The YouTube account was referring to her as ‘The Rising Phoenix.’ I think one video may still be available, but the account itself is gone. The website: kiratakenouchi.com is gone, as well. Everything is gone, and yet, it’s still being sold on Amazon? Something’s not right. Does anyone know what’s going on? Was there an issue with copyright? I noticed that she had some DA cosplayers in the video, as well. Did she have their permission to use their photos, and is that where the problem arose? I don’t understand why she would take it all down. The video was amazing, the music was astounding – did anyone else see it aside from me? I swear, if it were a trailer for a movie version of TR, I would have gone to see it opening night. As for the books that are currently being sold, I just honestly want to say that I don’t agree with it. I recall reading the fanfic back when it was free. I was excited to see an epic video advertising Kira’s return, as well; but I think she’s just trying to scam people again. I’m sorry, but this fanfic is still available on line for FREE. It’s a fanfic and she does not have the permission from the original author to be making money off of her work. I just can’t stand by and watch people pay over $20 for a fanfic. This is a downright scam, and it doesn’t feel right. Does anyone else feel this way? I feel kind of cheated and, overall, disappointed. The link below will show you where you can read TR and the other fics for FREE - as all fanfics should be. If the link doesn’t work, simply go on Tumblr, type in Taming Riki in the search bar, and you’ll find it there. That’s how I found it. It’s a legit pdf download from a drop box. Anyone who has a drop box can vouch and say that this is safe, as it is a professional system that even my college utilizes. Aside from my torn feelings, can anyone enlighten me to what’s going on? It’s like she popped out of the ground and then disappeared with the rising sun. http://rikibisonleader.tumblr.com/post/87634429057/taming-riki

I wish I could give you a complete answer. Fact is Kira does have medical issues and has done this before. Popped in, popped out and disappeared for months at a time. So if this has happened again, it is not a surprise.

I can't speak of the state of Kira's mind, but as the other commentor said, she has some mental health issues and has gone off the rails several times over the years. She has, at various times, found god, removed all her fiction and declared it an offence to god and swore she'd never write man-porn again. Weeks later she'd pop back up, say she was now on new medication and feeling much better and the fiction would go back up and she'd say she was continuing the story.

As far as her selling her fanfic... that is illegal and copyright infringement. She has never been able to provide proof that she has permission from either the original author or the publishing house that holds the rights to the work. That she's still trying to sell her story really pisses me off as an author. The golden fanfic rule for an author is that you make no profit off it.

While I haven't written fanfic in quite a number of years (all my writing is original stuff now), I still remember and hold that rule to be sacrosanct. It would be fairly easy for me to go back to The Last Cadre and file the serial numbers off and market it as an original work, but it started life as an AU AnK and that would still be wrong in my eyes.

I agree with this. It's always rubbed me the wrong way how she sold her fanfiction and no one seemed to be calling her out on it, rather they just threw their money at her :/ I don't think most of the people who bought her stuff were aware that it was illegal for her to do that.

Does anyone know if you can leave a comment on Amazon without having to buy the product?

I do believe you can leave a review on the item, even if you didn't purchase it. There are also ways to report the item itself. The U.S. copyright holder can also be contacted and made aware.

I left a comment on Amazon along with several others awhile back, criticizing the author and how Amazon allows such copyright infringements. However, the books were since removed and then re-posted, leaving a clean slate of reviews. Go figure.

I know this is about 3 years too late, but she has actually responded to some of those correctly calling her out for her illegal copyright infringement.

Just based on her responses alone, I feel zero sympathy for her and actually hate her, mental illness or not. The gall of her to claim that people are encouraging piracy of HER works when she knows full well that she is profiting off content she does not own. And I love her halfassed excuse that she has "many" original characters and content, therefore it's perfectly fine for her to be selling her fanfiction.

What a bitch.

Yes, you can comment without buying to product. You just don't get "Verified Purchaser" next to your name.

And if anyone is thinking "We can just make Amazon aware of it"...no. They won't do anything about it.

I pretty much agree with everything that's been said here so far. This sort of thing fries my nards and I'm one of the biggest supporters of copyright!!! :( I feel like I want to do what is illustrated in my avatar and kick her off the planet!!!! It's the sort of thing that really gets me fired up and it's the exact thing that is not only harming the original work but people are getting doped into believing that it's affiliated with the original and that's so not true. It's more than the fact that she ripped off people who bought her crap on Amazon, and violated the numero uno honor code amongst fanfic writers, but the manga and anime industry as a whole continues to be raped and pillaged by people solely out there to make a profit on the work....and backs.... of others and it's cruelly unfair. It's insulting on a creative level and on a moral level.

What I fear the most is that as long as hacks like her exist, we can expect nothing new in the future. I'd love, as I'm sure everyone within the community is, to see them finally give the 2012 anime remake the finish it so richly deserves. I'll continue to support the original as much as I can....and do. I vehemently refuse to give any lip service to soul-draining nitwits.

I just came from the Amazon reviews and her response to people calling her out for copyright infringement literally made my blood boil.

For her to actually have the gall to be responding to people like that, defending what she 100% knows is wrong with weak excuses like "many of the characters are original"...omg, the sooner she drops off the face of fandom, the better.

Having worked at Amazon, I can say that the page does get left up even if there is no stock for it. The only way TR could have been published is if it was released in a different country first that does not have as strict copy right laws. I dunno too much about Japans copy rights, but if they are like some of Americas, as the books were first published back in 1980's, after so many years someone can release a new version of it without it being illegal.

Example with Music, theres a 29(?) year copy right law where you have to get the permission to do a cover of it. After that you can copy it all you want, just not claim it as your own.

On a different note, so wanted to read this Q_Q. I've read and own all of the *real* ANK books, and was always wondering where people were getting some of the names from, cuz they ain't in there. Now I understand after thumbing through these's really quick ;x

Ppl selling fanfic without copyright indeed is outrageous, I mean that IS what makes fanfic so fun: anyone can write it + anyone can read it for free. It gives writers an opportunity to express their interest in a particular fandom AND use their creativeness for the benefit of a non-paying audience...

This Kira is a brilliant writer but indeed without permission from the original makers of AnK she shouldn't be selling her fic at all. Not to mention the scandal of it being online as a free fanfic for a long time before all of this commercial shit started...

And the worst part is: I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FIND THE ENDING ANYWHERE ONLINE!!!:O :P Argh that's just mean, you start reading sth as a fanfic and then all of a sudden you gotta pay to read the ending? Scandalous!;) No, seriously, that's just deceiving and torturing ppl :P It's annoying enough when it's original fic, but seriously fanfic? That's not even legal.

If anybody happens to have a link to the final chapters of this Taming Riki FANfic, do let me know ;) But I ain't gonna pay for it :P

You know, I wouldn't even be here were it not for that she came into my sphere on FB, marketing for-profit fanfic and got side-eyed. *sigh*

"The more you know, the more you learn."

People, I swear.

Taming Riki is available for free at kiratakenouchi.com
Although many of you don't appear to like me, you can read Taming Riki for free at my website http://www.kiratakenouchi.com. I've just updated the newest chapter. And FYI, I have permission from Rachel Livingston of DMP to publish Taming Riki. Enjoy.

Japan's Doujin Culture
A rather belated response, but I notice the thread seems to be active on-and-off. If you're upset about someone making money off fanfiction, then I suppose you aren't particularly acquainted with the doujin culture in Japan. Or maybe you're uncomfortable with it? But doujin circles are something of an established practice, and authors do in fact know they exist. They don't tend to press charges for copyright infringement, because the fanworks aren't competing with the official works in the market, I believe. And it helps to encourage spending in an active fandom. Publishing companies encourage the practice - or at the very least, allow it to go under the radar - because they see it as a way of nurturing a new generation of mangakas. (I'm sorry, this is just a tl;dr explanation.)

If you're aware of the practice and support it (alternatively, there are fanartists who sell merchandise at anime conventions, and cosplayers who sell prints), then I'm a little confused as to what the issue is with English fanfiction having a price attached. Fanzines, for example, have quite a bit of history, and there hasn't been much controversy about copyright infringement where they're concerned (that I know of) - at least not in the recent years.

(Sigh) Wow. Blast from the past! Kira Takenouchi still active and using the same name, too?!

Last time I checked up on her was... 10 years. Yeah, I'm old. And guess what? Kira hasn't changed much at all. That's a bit sad to see that after all that years.

As time as I post this: Kira still have the website, www.kirafics.com
Her fictions are not on kirafics.com anymore. Instead, she only has a news post dated February 20, 2018 (not that long ago):

Kira Takenouchi has moved her writing to Patreon, here. Please go there and become a patron to have access to all her current fiction.

To those who were subscribing to her site, she offers her most sincere apologies! Her hosting provider, GoDaddy, cancelled her account and refused to admit the error! She has moved to a new hosting provider, BlueHost, in order to put up this page to notify you of the change.

But rather than risk putting up her fiction once again with another web hosting provider, she has decided that Patreon will house her fiction, from here on out.

Kira Takenouchi is a Best-Selling author of m/m fiction and her books can be found on Amazon. Visit her Amazon page, here.

So, Kira Takenouchi moved all her works to Patreon- as in https://www.patreon.com/kiratakenouchi- Let's check it out!

Oh, it's not existing anymore. Boo.

Ok, Kira's Amazon page? Uhhh. None of her books is available -- Some used are up for sale, over a hundred. Ebooks?? None.

So the result? You will be disappointing.
