black light diner distro, december 2009 update [20 Dec 2009|08:36pm]

themachinestops
Hello everyone! Just a little update about the new zines available at Black Light Diner Distro!

HELLO ALABAMA: A ONE-SHOT DISASTER (Tuscaloosa, AL)

Courtney's (Muse) anti-love letter to Alabama was written after she packed up and moved from North Carolina to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to attend library science school. The move came with an unexpected downside in the racist and conservative attitudes of some of her classmates. While certainly not indicting all Alabamans, Courtney describes the self-silencing she must go through to be safe in her new location, from being forced to tear a pro-choice sticker off her car to having to check her political ideals at the door in order to have at least a few friends. There's also a piece about the underfunded and underutilized recycling program in Tuscaloosa, and how its mismanagement by clueless city officials has had devastating consequences for the working-class community who must live next to the plant. I've never moved to a drastically different geographical location (yet), but as someone who grew up in a more conservative area the themes of alienation rang true, and I think this would be a great zine for anyone who feels out of step with their surroundings, whether they're a native or a newcomer.

Also, I'm really on the lookout for some new zines to carry, in particular personal comics. If you have something you think I'd be interested in, drop me an email or send it to me!

Thanks for reading,

It's Alive! horror zine [17 Dec 2009|04:13pm]

polkadot_sally
Hi guys,

I posted here almost a year back about a horror zine I was putting together. Unfortunately life got in the way and it never got made. Well, it's getting made now.

It's called 'It's Alive!' and it will probably be a one-off zine, hopefully out by February.

It's very much in the early stages at the moment, but if anybody would like to contribute that would be great.

As I'm only just getting started on it, I can't give an exact description of what I'm looking for, but I'm hoping it will turn out to be a fun and witty zine for horror fans, full of film reviews (classics, b-movies and modern), interviews and a few other horror related features such as reviews of ghost walks, the scariest places to visit in the UK, scary stories etc. Here's one of my film reviews that will be going in, to give you an idea of what to expect.

If you've got anything you think might fit in, please drop me an email to siobhanlouise@gmail.com and I'll get straight back to you.

Additionally, if you think It's Alive! sounds interesting and you want to order a copy or find out more about it, send me an email to siobhanlouise@gmail.com, or sign up to my blog for updates.

Thanks guys!

(x-posted, sorry!)

Sweet Candy Distro - Winter 09 [12 Dec 2009|02:54pm]

sagiegirl
Happy Winter Sweet Candy friends!

It's been awhile since I have sent out distro updates. Did you think I disappeared? No way! My son was born in August so I've been quite busy with a baby, homeschooling my daughters, as well as rockin' the work-at-home mama status. I decided to re-organize the distro and start fresh. Perfect timing with the New Year coming up fast.

No major changes, just asking for extra patience when you send me your zine for review. My goal is to get back with you within a week of your zine's arrival. Life happens, there may be a delay at times. I will be mailing zine orders out twice a week and you can now view order tracking on our blog, which is located on our website. I plan to send out quarterly updates opposed to monthly ones. I encourage you to politely harass me through e-mail if you ever want to inquire about the status of your zine submission or distro order. Sometimes things happen within the postal service and unless we communicate, our relationship won't be as awesome as it can be.

Hello all,
I've just launched a little zine distro called Zinemonger, which only stocks free zines. All you do is browse the website http://zinemonger.blogspot.com , choose zines up to a weight of 90 grammes and supply the postage, either by sending a self-addressed envelope with a 47p large letter stamp, or by sending me the cost of postage by Paypal if you live outside UK. Full instructions are on the site. Please read them carefully as this will save time for all of us. Have fun!
Cheers,

black light diner distro, october 2009 update [18 Oct 2009|07:59pm]

themachinestops
Hey everyone! It's been awhile since I posted about the new zines and comics available at Black Light Diner Distro, and there are a ton of them!

BOOTY #19 (Amherst, MA)
Covering the time period between September 2003 and March 2005, this issue of Anne's personal comic book includes work stories, an encounter with an animate snowman, a last-minute, surprisingly cheap vacation to Iceland (!), and a very moving piece about Anne's relationship to her breasts, tying in with her mother's double mastectomy. Booty is a zine I started reading when it was carried by the late, great Pander Zine Distro, and I'm happy to say that it is just as I've remembered it: smart, often funny, and with simple, cute art that tells its stories well. Half-legal, 16 pages.

Just wondering... [10 Sep 2009|03:56pm]

geezlouise77
[ mood | dorky ]

I hope this is ok to post here. I was personally wondering if any zines out there were looking for contributors. I'm sure there are others wondering the same. So then: anyone need someone who writes reviews (of zines, music, movies, books, websites, etc.), personal essays (working in a library, living with mental illness, stories on coming out, being queer, being with dysfunctional family, my compulsive liar brother, etc.) and the occasional fiction or poetry?  I'd be happy to write something tailored to a theme as well, for paper or online zines. Hope to hear from you!

Hey everybody,

Just to let you know, issues #1 and #2 of my feminist perzine, Here. In My Head, are available to buy or trade!

#1 features written pieces about not shaving, the ongoing need for feminism in university, body image, being questioned for writing strong feminist lyrics, and my experiences joining the university's Songwriting Society.

#2 features introspective pieces about my musical and creative development from childhood, anger and betrayal, drunken thoughts on sexist jokes, and insecurities caused by a sexist magazine article.

Both issues are available for 50p a pop; I'm also happy to trade for other zines or for mix CDs (as long as you give me the track listing first). I only accept concealed British money for purchases.

Leave me a comment if you're interested!
