The electric company, Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO), is proposing a large biodiesel plant -- apparently larger than most existing plants in the US. They are attempting to convince our Governor to sign a $59 million bond issue to support this plant. She must decide very soon. There are deep concerns that Hawai`i could become a large importer of palm oil.

Company representatives (Blue Earth Maui) initially claimed that they would not be using palm oil (testimony before our legislature) but now are publicly stating that they will use "sustainable palm oil".

But all infos from groups in the south point out that there is no "sustainable palm oil". Palm oil companies are destroying rainforests and threatening local comunities all over the world from Columbia to Indonesia.
