ADMIN: free file hosting list

Originally compiled by speakingsoul (post), I am only reposting should she ever choose to lock or delete as it is an invaluable resource to this community that should not be lost. If you repost this list, please please please include a credit to speakingsoul and a link to her post as the work put in is staggering and she deserves the recognition. In simpler terms: Do not claim credit for work that you did not do. You're not a horrid, selfish little child, you have no excuse for acting like one.

Sites marked with * have been used by me at least once, sites with ** are ones I use often. The typical zipped mix, in my experience, runs at least 40MB, you should obviously take the size of your file into consideration when you begin your upload. I have not visited all of these sites, I have no plans to do so, this is merely a resource. If you find that a site is unreliable for whatever reason, please feel free to leave a comment and share your information with the rest of us. In that same vein, if you know of a site that you think should be included on this list, please comment with a link in the same format as used below. (I'm not going to go hunt down the file life or size and download limits if you don't just give them to me. I'm far too lazy for that.)

Happy uploading! :)

ADMIN

It is time for me to put on the big girl pants and address an issue that plagues comms such as this one.

Commenting.

Rather, the lack thereof when you download a mix.

Some people upload mixes onto personal servers and would like to be able to track bandwidth usage. Some people want to know how many times to upload something to YSI. Some people just want to know their efforts have been appreciated.

Whatever the reason, the ratio of downloads to comments is weak (my informal survey leads me to believe it hovers somewhere around 2:1) and I want us to do better.

Now, I can't order everyone to comment when they download and neither would I be able to enforce such an order, but as one of the mods of this comm, I am making it a personal request.

It's simple:

If you download a mix, please comment.

You don't need to wait until you listen and are thus able to give a critique (though if you would like to do that as well, go crazy).

It's fast.

It's easy.

Just do it.

Don't make me get the paddle.

Thank you.

ADMIN: Affiliates

Hello, community!

Your admins of infamy have a question for you.

We know you like fanmixes but how many people here happen to like Firefly as well?

Uh-huh, uh-huh, o rly?

Well, we'd like you to meet cortexradio, _rfa's first (and so far only) affiliate!

Love Simon more than life itself? Think Kaylee/Inara is the best girlslash ever? Have a deep and fierce love for Mal/Jayne? Couldn't make it a day without Zoe/Wash? Gotta have a little of that crazy space incest with your morning coffee? Well, why not showcase your fannish love with a mix and post it cortexradio, the place to go for all your Firefly fanmix needs? The community is run by one of _rfa's very own and the set up is pretty close to what you're already used to here so, really, what are you waiting for? Go! Go now! Can't stop the signal, yo.

With this lovely pimp, _rfa is now on the look out for even more affiliates! There are rules, of course, because anarchy makes your mods all itchy but if you think your community fits the specs, let's be best friends forever!

-- The community must be a fanmix or SGA related community. That's kind of a no-brainer there, I think.

-- You must have open membership and allow posting by all members. There's no point in us pimping you if we can't even post there. Besides, elitism is the height of lame.

-- We will not accept any communities that aren't all-pairing and gen friendly. Therefore, no OTP or "everybody but..." communites. _rfa loves everybody and so should you.

-- It would be pretty damn nice of you to include a link back to _rfa. If we're pointing people in your direction, it's obviously only fair to show us the same courtesy.

So, in summation, if you think your comm fits the above guidelines, please comment on this post! Please be aware, though, that if your comm is very obviously out of bounds, we will not hesitate to mock you viciously and publicly.

And that's it for this post, kids. Until next time, be excellent to each other and, as always, feel free to comment or e-mail us if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

ADMIN: subject lines and spoiler warnings

Okay, so we're apparently still having some trouble remembering to format our subject lines properly. It wasn't really a big deal at first (and still isn't really a HUGE deal) but I'm just sort of tired of trying to guess what the hell your mix is about when I'm reading my fpage. Subject - Title, my fanmixing buddies. It's not hard, I promise you. Subject - Title. Subject - Title. Subject - Title. Subject - Title. Subject - Title. Subject - Title. Subject - Title. Subject - Title. I want it exactly like that. Exactly. I don't want a colon, I don't want a semicolon, I don't want a comma, I don't want the subject second, I don't want just the title, I definitely don't want a blank one -- Subject - Title, only.

Some examples: Collapse )

Starting now, if you make a post without the proper subject line, I'm going to have to ask you to change it. Ooh, scary, I know. But that's just going to take up your time and mine and I'm very busy with all the nothing that I do all day so... yes. (And, in the off chance that I ask you to change your subject line and you don't? Well, then I'll have to delete your post. I doubt that will happen though because I don't think any of you are, like, four or anything. That would make baby Athosians cry though so let's not go there. That would be a sucky place to go, I think. Yes.)

Also? Just to remind everyone -- please remember your spoiler warnings! Very important, that. There are still some sad souls who haven't seen the new episodes and don't want to know all of the awesome that has happened until they can see it for themselves. I know, I know, it's hard to believe, but we do exist. We're like Santa Claus -- you can't see us, you can't touch us, you just have to believe in us and the magic of Christmas will be yours. Or something. I have no idea, I just don't like spoilers.

In conclusion, Subject - Title and spoilers are bad. Okay? Okay! Good to know we're all on the same page! Feel free to comment or e-mail me privately if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Thumbs up and all that. Be excellent to each other. May the force be with you. Rock on.

ADMIN: 200 watchers & some modly reminders

oh em gee, I'm so busy right now but I just had to stop by and post this: Radio Free Atlantis has reached 200 watchers! ::throws confetti:: Who would have thought? Not me, that's for sure. When the community opened, I had hopes that it would go over well but I never dreamed it would go over quite so well. I'm so happy to see that so many people have been interested enough to friend the community and I am just thrilled that so many have actually joined (all 126 of you! woo!) and started posted such lovely mixes. Thank you to all just-watchers -- you are the lifeblood. And thank you to all of the mixers -- keep up the awesomeness. :)

And, well, since I'm here, a few modish type things:

1. I'd like to remind everyone -- because it can never be said enough -- commenting when you download is a good thing. A very good thing. Unless you've made a fanmix you probably don't realize the time that goes into it -- it's not just a slapdash project. (At least it shouldn't be, in my personal opinion.) There's time and effort put into these mixes beyond just uploading a couple files: song choice, song placement, (sometimes) cover art, all the uploading and post formatting. It's mainly just for fun but there is work put in and... well, if you've ever put work into something and had it ignored, you know how it feels. Now, I'm not asking everyone to download everything -- that would be ridiculous and I'm not going to do it either. But if you do download? Drop a comment, okay? It's only fair. Give and take, peeps.

2. I've seen some people say things like "I was so going to use that song in my mix" and whatnot -- there is no rule against using a song more than one time. Obviously if the majority of your songs have already been on mixes it would be a little weird, but if you just share one or two songs with someone else? That's perfectly all right. It's not about being first or being the only -- it's about sharing your, you know, personal musical vision with others and sometimes... well, great minds think alike. So, really, no need for those worries.

3. I've also seen some comments along the lines of "I don't like your song choices" and that? That would be not cool. At all. Yes, you are entirely free to have your opinion. No, don't get your knickers in a twist, I'm not trying to zomgoppress you. I just don't see the point in comments like that -- if you don't like something why are you wasting your time downloading and commenting on it? Go wash your dog or bake a cake or something. I can't stop you from making comments like that and hurting people's feelings -- I can't be everywhere at once -- but I can tell you that it only makes you look like a wanker. In the immortal words of Frankie Goes to Hollywood: relax, don't do it.

4. On the subject of friends-locking posts: it is not forbidden, it is not discouraged, it is entirely your own choice. If every poster chose to lock all of their posts it would be entirely fine by me. Obviously the only people that will be able to see those posts/leave you feedback are other members of the community but, yes, I leave the choice up to you. I'm not going to lock my posts but I don't frown on those who choose to do so -- to each their own. However, linking to a friends-locked entry you have in your own journal is a negative. Don't do that, that's just plain annoying, I hate that.

And that's it for now. Thank you again to all the fabulous watchers and wonderful mixers! I'm so happy to have you here at _rfa, I hope that it continues to be a community you enjoy seeing on your friends page. ;) As always, feel free to get in touch with me via e-mail or by commenting here if you have any questions or concerns.

ADMIN: info and rules

What does John sing in the shower? What was stuck in Rodney's head while he was taking his MENSA exam? What's on Carson's iPod? What are the perfect John/Teyla songs? If Ford/Beckett had a soundtrack, what would it be? What's blaring out of the Wraith's speakers during their wild Hive Ship parties?

These are burning questions and it's up to you to answer them! Or something sort of like that.

Welcome to Radio Free Atlantis, your one-stop shop for every kind of SGA fanmix imaginable! What's a fanmix? Well... it's a mix. Made by a fan. It's kind of self-explanatory. You should join!
