[SCANS] Spin: April 2004 [20 Feb 2007|10:29pm]

[ mood | high ]

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the day of Kurt Cobain's birth I scanned the April 2004 issue of Spin Magazine.
As you prolly know April 2004 was the 10th anniversary of Kurt's death so Spin put together a really nice piece. It talks a lot about the history of grunge music, 90s rock music in general, what Kurt could possibly up to now had he lived, and the impact of his music today as well as other artists thoughts on Kurt and Nirvana. I especially like the collection of concert flyers on the last two pages.

As a new member I thought I should at least post something, she here's one of my favorite Kurt quotes. I got it out of the book "Journals", the culmination of his old journals and notebooks.

Uncertainty, like opening your eyes wide in the dark then closing them hard, then open and blinded by the sparkling silver dots created from preassure on the corneas, squint, roll, focus, then your blind again but at least you saw light somehow"

hi im new to the community. i joined because Kurt Donald Cobain is my hero and its good to find others who respect him the same way i do. dont have many Nirvana fans here in Bumfuck. anyway, i really like this community and i like that its not filled with death threats to Courtney Love (although its pretty obvious to my position on that). so this is my way of saying hi and feel free to delete this if its not allowed.

I hope this is allowed. :-) I didn't see any rules about not promoting related communities. I have a new community for Frances Bean Cobain. You are also free to post anything about Courtney and Kurt. Please take a minute to join!

Hey, I noticed that nobody's posted in here for awhile. Anyway, just wanted to say hey to everybody in the community. And, also, I got the coolest Kurt Cobain poster today:D

I hope it's alright if I promote a community. I'm trying to promote it pretty much everywhere, so just skip this if you've already seen it.

grunge_spirit

It's a community for Nirvana/Kurt/Grunge fans over 23 years of age only. It's obviously a very small community, but check it out if you're around that age. The original idea comes from forever_nirvana. Just thought I would give them the credit, and also, go join that one community if you are under 23 (but 18+).

Thanks!

Guys, if you're thinking of seeing "Last Days" by Gus Van Sant, a film "inspired" by Kurt's last days alive, just DONT. It's total shit and it's borderline offensive to his memory. Having been asked if it was about Kurt a million times, van Sant has consistently said it wasn't, it merely inspired by him. How far does inspiration go? The character in the movie, Blake, happens to escape from somewhere( OH MY GOD COULD IT BE A REHAB CENTRE?) walks home and avoids his housemates. He wears exactly the same clothes as Kurt did (ripped Jeans, black and red stripy sweater, bug-eye glasses, pea-green cardigan, pyjamas) looks the same as Kurt (unshaved/goatee, shoulder- length blond hair, has a back problem)."Blake" smokes, is quiet but a good listener, depressed, plays all instruments, is a musician that plays a suspiciously Nirvana- like song during the film. He also has a wife and child that we never see. Courtney is mentioned in a none-too-subtle conversation in a car by the characters who are a VERY thinly disguised Tom Grant and Cobain's house nanny. Blake kills himself in the greenhouse(with a shotgun) and the flim ends with a direct replication of that shot of the greenhouse where all you can see is Kurt's leg lying on the floor. It is also a maintenance guy that finds the body. And then Kurt's ghost climbs out of his body. i almost puked. Throughout the whole film, Blake mumbles incoherently to himself, grunts at every one and doesnt have any dialogue. He also takes 5 minutes to sit down and is constantly high (though we never see any drugs in the film). And Van Sant also does what he always does; adds a completely random gay sex scene. there is NO plot, NO dialogue and every shot is held for about 5minutes, including a shot of a motionless bush in the woods with no voice over it or anything. there is also a really random pop music video clip of like "Seal" or something. Blake also crawls around the floor in a black dress wearing a tiara (WHERE O WHERE HAVE I SEEN THAT BEFORE). Blake, and therefore Kurt, is painted as being mentally defective in this film, hardly an appropriate thing to be done to someone who was greatly admired. there is also NO mention of a possible murder.

I just joined this community. I chose this one cause it looks a lot better than some of the others I've seen around which are filled with teenies going on about 'liek omg kurt is so hawt!' hehe.

I'm here for the music - I love Nirvana and Kurt. I won't deny that I find him attractive but that is not the reason I like Nirvana.

Nice to meet you all, I'm from Australia.

Hey guys, I just joined a few mintues ago.

I guess I'll do an intro thing, huh?

Name's Jessica, and I love Nirvana. The band in a whole is amazing. Not JUST Kurt. Of Course Kurt was amazing, but I love Krist and Dave too, without them, Nirvana would have been nothing. You can't have a band without a bassist or a drummer.

Anyway, I love their music, and Pennyroyal Tea acutally makes me cry. The music has touched me in so many different ways, and it sadens me that people are starting to forget the band that created everything. Kurt, Krist, Dave, they are all legends, and always will be.

Anyway, while I'm at it, I just have to say that this is an interesting community, I've seen some areas with drama, but me and my no life self find it almost amusing. Entertaining is a better word.

Well, hope to be posting with useful info soon!

*Jess
