Subject:ED in ‘08 Reaching Out to Caucus Goers at 2007 Straw Poll
Posted by:educationin08.
Time:2:32 pm.
ED in ’08 will be giving away Maggie Moo’s ice cream & IPODs
Ames, IA – The significant need for K-12 education reform will be highlighted to caucus goers in Iowa at the Straw Poll this weekend by Strong American Schools’ ED in ’08 campaign. ED in ’08 will be giving away Maggie Moo’s ice cream and raffling off IPODs and a Macbook computer to caucus goers at their booth throughout the Straw Poll on Saturday.

“The story up until now about the Iowa Straw Poll has been about who’s not attending,” said Marc Lampkin, ED in ’08 executive director. “But ED in ‘08 will be there, making a strong push to reach out to Iowa caucus goers. In Iowa, where only 33% of 4th graders read on grade level, and only 34% of 8th graders are proficient in math, education should be at the front of everyone’s agenda.”

The Straw Poll is just one of several ways the ED in 08 campaign is reaching out to Iowans. This past week in IA, ED in ’08 launched a new television ad campaign, investing more than $45,000 over a nine day period in the Des Moines market to inform Iowans and candidates of the need for K-12 education reform. The ad (which is available on our Web site at www.EDin08.com) features a recent Johnston High School graduate and Iowan, Abby Bowman, 17, who will cast her first vote in a presidential election next year. Also recently, ED in ‘08 had a team of 50 cyclists participate in the RAGBRAI bike tour across the state.

Did anyone film that lightning storm last night in DSM? It seemed like every second a flash of lightning illuminated my room.

I just moved here from the Pacific Northwest, where we never, ever had lightning or thunder, so even the smallest storms are exciting. But that one last night seemed particularly awesome.

Hello folks, I'm new here. My name is Rhue, and though I live in northern Minnesota, I end up spending large chunks of time in Iowa because my extended family is based in Indianola and Des Moines, and my sister goes to school in Forest City. I'm just watching this comm to keep up on events I can check out when I'm in Des Moines, and maybe meet some cool people to hang out with when I have to be away from home.

See y'all around.

Subject:looking for a restaurant in Sioux City

Time:12:23 pm.
I have lots of family in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area, but I will be visiting Sioux City for the first time for a wedding this weekend.  It will be my husband's first trip to Iowa and I want him to try some Iowa specialties.

Can anyone recommend good places to get a pork tenderloin sandwich or broasted chicken?  We can't get either here in Texas.

Thanks!

Okay, quick blurb before going back to work.  I'm a copyeditor and professional writer living in Davenport.  I'm looking for local folks to be friends with, as I take it as a sign when my mother tells me I don't have any friends.  I'm into anime, sci-fi, reading, writing, graphic novels, music, and role playing games (which I haven't done but want to get into).  Drop me a line.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Subject:Iowa woman sends her sister whale vomit for Christmas
Posted by:bramasole_iowa.

MONTAUK, N.Y. — In this season of strange presents from relatives, Dorothy Ferreira got a doozy the other day from her 82-year-old sister in Waterloo, Iowa. It was ugly. It weighed four pounds. There was no receipt in the box. Inside she found what looked like a gnarled, funky candle but could actually be a huge hunk of petrified whale vomit worth as much as $18,000.Collapse )

Subject:DES MOINES One Bedroom Apt Avail For Sublease!!
Posted by:boombacha.
Time:11:15 am.
Hey, guys. I am moving out and...well, what do you know...my lease isn't quite up. This is definitely an opportunity for gain, as I signed my lease owing much less each month than all equally sized and less equipped units in the building! Hey, don't believe me? Call and ask about the other apartment available. I can provide the building manager's phone number, if interested.

I live in a cozy and very nice, one bedroom apartment in a charming brick building at 43rd and Grand (right near The Des Moines Art Center). My lease is through May 30th, 2007 and my rent runs $500/ month with all utilities paid except electric (avg. $15-20/ mo). I am simply moving because my boyfriend and I are expecting a baby and we are in need of a two bedroom with more space. The apartment is very clean and quiet with all window coverings provided, separate kitchen, full sized fridge and stove/oven, and many windows in all rooms facing both North and East. The apartment has brand new vinyl in the kitchen and a brand new ceiling in the bathroom. Pets are welcome with no additional monthly cost and you may paint, as long as you are comfortable painting the walls back "antique white" or off-white (as they are now) when you move out. Interested? Questions? Please respond by sending me a message and I will get back with you immediately. We are looking to move very quickly (by the 1st of January) and have application and any additional info necessary, so do not hesitate to respond! This apartment will go quickly!

WFP Founder Dr. Norman E. Borlaug to receive Congressional Gold Medal of Honor
Nation’s highest civilian honor will be given to “Father of Green Revolution”
December 6, 2006

(DES MOINES, IA, USA) - The United States House of Representatives voted today to honor World Food Prize Founder and 1970 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug with the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Dr. Borlaug is believed to have saved more lives than any other person who has ever lived—more than a billion—through his breakthrough work in agriculture. He is widely credited with ushering in the 'Green Revolution,' the greatest period of food production in human history (see all Dr. Borlaug's accomplishments).Collapse )

Leach mentioned as possible U.N. ambassador
JANE NORMAN
REGISTER WASHINGTON BUREAU
November 14, 2006

A push is on by some members of Congress to see Rep. Jim Leach, R-Ia., named as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Leach, a 30-year veteran of the House and a foreign affairs expert, was
defeated in the Nov. 7 election by Democrat David Loebsack of Mount Vernon.

Leach is the top Republican on the House International Relations
Committee and would have been in line for the chairmanship had he stayed in
office and Republicans retained control.

He is the chairman of the subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific and has been a leading voice on policy toward North Korea.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., and Rep. James Walsh, R-N.Y., are developing
a letter to other members proposing that Leach be named U.N. ambassador.

An aide to Blumenauer said the letter will be sent around this week.

The current ambassador is John Bolton, who has been fiercely opposed by
Democrats. Bolton is now serving in a recess appointment, which means
his term expires when the new Congress convenes in January.

Although President Bush has resubmitted Bolton’s nomination, it’s not clear there will be enough votes in the Senate to confirm him.

Aides to Leach said that he had no immediate comment on the proposal.

Time:9:17 am.
There are some dogs in desperate need of an urgent transport. These dogs have only until Saturday to live and make it to rescue. They are in need of only 1 driver to help take half of these dogs for 1 leg in IOWA.

Leg # 4- Saturday, October 7, 2006
Ames, IA to Clear Lake, IA
11:05am - 12:30pm (83 miles, approx 1 hour, 25 minutes)

Please go to http://community.livejournal.com/driveforlife/933925.html if you think you can help save these animals.

To the maintainer: If this falls under the umbrella of advertising, then please let me know. I thought it would be applicable as the leg needed is in Iowa, but I understand if you do not want these kinds of posts in your community.
