The Music man

Oh, there's nothing halfway
about the Iowa way to treat you
when we treat you
which we may not do at all.

There's an Iowa kind of special
chip-on-the-shoulder attitude
We've never been without
that we recall

We can be cold as a falling
thermometer in December
if you ask about our weather in July
And we're so by-God stubborn
we can stand touchin' noses
for a week at a time
and never see eye-to-eye.

But what the heck, you're welcome
Join us at the picnic
You can have your fill
Of all the food you bring yourself.
You really ought to give Iowa a try.
(Provided you are contrary.)

We can be cold a our falling
thermometer in December
if you ask about our weather in July
And we're so By-God stubborn
we can stand touchin' noses
for a week at a time
and never see eye-to-eye.

But, we'll give you our shirt
And a back to go with it
If your crops should happen to die

So what the heck, you're welcome
Glad to have you with us
Even though we may not ever mention it again
You really ought to give Iowa a try.

Ought to give Iowa a try

I dunno how many of you kids like musicals, but this is one of my favs (The Music Man). It was made by Merideth Wilson, whos home town is mason city. He based it on nearly every small town in Iowa it seems like. Even though it takes place in the early 20th century, a lot of the small town ness of the musical is still very true today. I've been listening to the soundtrack the past day and it's just got me thinking about my ole' homestate again. I got to be in the musical when i was in 7th grade, i was the constable! That play was so much fun. it was the year of Iowas sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) and it seems like half of muscatine was there in the central middle school auditorium that night. The stands were packed. My deliveries were flawless haha. Those lyrics are from the Iowa Stubborn song, at the beginning, when Professor Harold Hill first comes into the fictional "river city iowa". I like to think it's muscatine...hehe. It had a Broadway run of 1375 shows and won numerous tony awards, the cast won a grammy for the album, and the musical score for the movie won an academy award. If you like musicals, and like Iowa, you should definitely see it.

12 days till i go back to iowa!
