Ian Curtis memorial stone stolen

From BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/manchester/7486280.stm

Curtis was 23 when he hanged himself in the kitchen of his Macclesfield home in May 1980, shortly before the band were due to go on tour in the US.

Cheshire Police said his memorial stone was taken from where he is buried in Macclesfield Cemetery.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information on its whereabouts to contact them.

Detectives said the stone, which has the inscription “Ian Curtis 18 - 5 - 80″ and the words “Love Will Tear Us Apart” was taken sometime between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

A police spokesman said: “There is no CCTV in the area and there are no apparent leads as to who is responsible for the theft.

“This is a very unusual theft and I am confident that someone locally will have knowledge about who is responsible or where the memorial stone is at present.”

Although the band reformed into New Order after Curtis’s death in 1980, there has been an upsurge of interest in its work.

An acclaimed biopic about Curtis, called Control, was released in 2007 and a film documentary, called simply Joy Division, was released earlier this year.

Will 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' be a hit a third time?

Joy Division's classic final single 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' is to be-released next month.

The track, out September 24, is being reissued ahead of the release of 'Control', the movie biopic about the life of the band's singer Ian Curtis, which is out on October 5.

'Love Will Tear Us Apart' has been a Top 20 hit twice before, in June 1980, a month after Curtis' suicide, and June 1995.

As previously reported, Joy Division's back catalogue is to be reissued with extra material on September 10.

So Control the biopic of Ian Curtis is in the production stages at LA/Pittsburgh based Claraflora.

Apparently all Joy Division performances within the film are performed by the actors themselves and there is no footage of Joy Division. This was against original plans but apparently the band in the film really gelled so it was the obvious way to go. There is music from Roxy Music, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols which will all be original versions and the film is filmed in black and white to reflect the atmosphere of Joy Division.

Annik Honore was interviewed for the first time ever by the writer. Here are some stills from the set with Sam Riley looking very like Ian and the actress Samantha Morton playing his wife, Deborah:

I recently read somewhere that Hooky was not happy with the movie because New Order were not consulted enough. I think they are still doing the score. My source (joydivisioncentral.com) points out that this is a movie about Ian Curtis & not Joy Division so maybe that is why.

I was positive about the soundtrack when I heard that New Order were overseeing it. However I read that The Killers are performing "Shadowplay" over the end credits. What a bad omen. When New Order Played T In The Park Last year Brandon Flowers came on stage and sang "Crystal" with the band and did a bloody awful job. Here is the performance here: it made me cringe. I think someone better could have been chosen to do this cover.  Bobby Gillespie for example. Anyone but Flowers.

The film is to be released 2007.

An interesting find... [20 Sep 2006|03:57pm]

Something I picked up on Werner Herzog's Wiki...

The original vinyl release version of Joy Division's posthumous album Still featured the following groove notation: "The chicken won't stop" (side A), etched chicken tracks across the grooves (sides B & C), and "The chicken stops here" (side D). These are all references to Stroszek's grim finale."

I ran over to my record collection and dug out Still as soon as I read this, but alas, "Made in Italy".

If you haven't actually got around to Strozek yet, I recommend it. Herzog is a great director and the film is excellent. Get it through Netflix and do me a favor - write "J.D." on the slip-cover it if you rented it because you are a Joy Division fan. I have always been curious as to how many folks do so after hearing Ian watched it hours before his suicide.

[ mood | amused ]

So the new Ian Curtis movie by Anton Corbjin starts filming today with music from Iggy Popp, David Bowie, Roxy Music and New Order.  I am most excited about this.  I did find it amusing that Mark E Smith commented that he would probably be in it.

Here is a link to this that is interesting

(clinging on to nearest passers by)

What are everyone's thoughts on Mark E Smith saying that members of Joy Division stopped Ian Curtis coming to him the week before his death to talk about his problems.  Personally I think Mark E Smith is talking crap as normal.  I love The Fall but Mark E Smith's version of the truth I would tend to dismiss.  I am sure that if Bernard, Peter & Steven thought that anyone could help Ian then they would not have stood in his way.  If there was any hostility to Smith then it would have been a fear of Ian being in his company as he is supposedly not a nice person.
