I am reading Joy Division and the Making of Unknown Pleasures by Jake Kennedy and noticed that there was a photograph in the book of Ian that I had never seen before so I thought I would share incase other people hadn't.
So Control the biopic of Ian Curtis is in the production stages at LA/Pittsburgh based Claraflora.
Apparently all Joy Division performances within the film are performed by the actors themselves and there is no footage of Joy Division. This was against original plans but apparently the band in the film really gelled so it was the obvious way to go. There is music from Roxy Music, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols which will all be original versions and the film is filmed in black and white to reflect the atmosphere of Joy Division.
Annik Honore was interviewed for the first time ever by the writer. Here are some stills from the set with Sam Riley looking very like Ian and the actress Samantha Morton playing his wife, Deborah:
I recently read somewhere that Hooky was not happy with the movie because New Order were not consulted enough. I think they are still doing the score. My source (joydivisioncentral.com) points out that this is a movie about Ian Curtis & not Joy Division so maybe that is why.
I was positive about the soundtrack when I heard that New Order were overseeing it. However I read that The Killers are performing "Shadowplay" over the end credits. What a bad omen. When New Order Played T In The Park Last year Brandon Flowers came on stage and sang "Crystal" with the band and did a bloody awful job. Here is the performance here: it made me cringe. I think someone better could have been chosen to do this cover. Bobby Gillespie for example. Anyone but Flowers.
The original vinyl release version of Joy Division's posthumous album Still featured the following groove notation: "The chicken won't stop" (side A), etched chicken tracks across the grooves (sides B & C), and "The chicken stops here" (side D). These are all references to Stroszek's grim finale."
I ran over to my record collection and dug out Still as soon as I read this, but alas, "Made in Italy".
If you haven't actually got around to Strozek yet, I recommend it. Herzog is a great director and the film is excellent. Get it through Netflix and do me a favor - write "J.D." on the slip-cover it if you rented it because you are a Joy Division fan. I have always been curious as to how many folks do so after hearing Ian watched it hours before his suicide.
So the new Ian Curtis movie by Anton Corbjin starts filming today with music from Iggy Popp, David Bowie, Roxy Music and New Order. I am most excited about this. I did find it amusing that Mark E Smith commented that he would probably be in it.
What are everyone's thoughts on Mark E Smith saying that members of Joy Division stopped Ian Curtis coming to him the week before his death to talk about his problems. Personally I think Mark E Smith is talking crap as normal. I love The Fall but Mark E Smith's version of the truth I would tend to dismiss. I am sure that if Bernard, Peter & Steven thought that anyone could help Ian then they would not have stood in his way. If there was any hostility to Smith then it would have been a fear of Ian being in his company as he is supposedly not a nice person.
