Rec: Prince of the Air [Pretty Guardian Sailormoon] [22 Jul 2005|12:39pm]

Title: Prince of the Air
Author: daringu
Author on LJ: daringu, fics posted to daringu_filter
Fandom: Pretty Guardian Sailormoon (PGSM) (the live-action version of Sailormoon)
Rating: none given
Warnings: none
Why I like this fic: I prattled on in the comments of this post at the bottom of the fic, but I love this fic because it is a perfect blend of PGSM and the original manga/anime version of Sailormoon. It's a different Mamoru, a different Usagi, and yet they're the same Mamoru and Usagi we know so well. I love Mamoru fics and this is a perfect example, a great addition to the genre.

Rec: Dreams of Yellowed Bone [Gundam Wing, NC-17, yaoi] [10 Jul 2005|11:52am]

Title: Dreams of Yellowed Bone
Author: Keelywolf
Author on LJ: keelywolfe
Fandom: Gundam Wing
Rating: NC-17
Pairings: 2x3
Warnings: yaoi
Why I like this fic: Because it is my OTP? No, to be fair, it is far more than just the pairing that makes me adore this piece. The writing here is lyrical and flows so smoothly. Fever-dreams are a bit overused in fanfic as some kind of plot device to hide poor punctuation, but I didn't get any sense of that in this ficlet. This is a short, gorgeous, delicate delve into Trowa's irrational mind. The unconventional beauty of the writing here and the fact that this fic appealed to me on so many levels means that why I fangirl it so much is hard to quantify exactly. But I do.

Rec: Dragonfell [Gundam Wing, lime, yaoi] [09 Jul 2005|10:19am]

Title: Dragonfell
Author: Becca Abbott
Fandom: Gundam Wing
Rating: lime
Pairings: 1+2, 3+4, 5+13
Warnings: yaoi, some violence
Why I like this fic: It is billed as an 'AU, Adventure, Lime' which really sums it up. Becca Abbott is a superb writer who carries off this fantasy setting without turning it into a clunky 50-pages-of-description drivel that some big-name high fantasy writers manage to get published. The 'fantasy' element here is quite restrained, more like historical fantasy rather than high fantasy; in my opinion, there aren't many AUs better than this one in GW. And well, the yaoi element in this fic is perhaps the best I've come across in a long long time (and that is a claim that I do not make lightly). The deft handling of Heero and Duo's burgeoning relationship is just utterly perfect, set against a fic that actually has a decent plot. Dragonfell is a single, lengthy (novella-ish) fic.

Rec: The Whispers Series [Gundam Wing, NC-17, yaoi] [08 Jul 2005|11:16pm]

Title: The Whispers Series
Author: Maldoror
Author on LJ: maldoror_gw
Fandom: Gundam Wing
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: violence, sexual content (yaoi)
Pairings: 1x2, 3x4
Why I like this fic: I am an admitted Duo-fan, and this series definitely nurtured that tendency. It was written a while back now, but I still think it is one of the best the fandom has seen and particularly is an excellent first fic to read in the fandom. I felt that Maldoror stuck to what is the essence of GW - the fact that it is violent and brutal, but with a touch of sentimentality. Her characters are so strongly crafted, and she doesn't back away from the fact that these are teenage boys fighting in a war they should be too young to witness. The side-story 'What's In A Name' is one of the most stunning pieces I've read, and I actually just sat in my chair unmoving for a good few minutes after reading it. The 'Indiscretions' arc is wonderfully humorous, but it is the insightfulness of her depiction of Duo in the preceeding arcs that I really adored. Her Heero is also not the usual alpha-male-domineering one that often crops up in fanon, which is a huge plus. And yes, I did mention 'arcs' within the series. This is an extremely lengthy work, but well worth the time it takes to read it. Maldoror is a fantastic writer, who has a very readible and polished style. Her later works are even more professional than some of her earlier stuff, but I would happily recommend anything she has written.

Rec: Up the Spout Again [Inu Yasha] [07 Jul 2005|11:28pm]

Title: Up the Spout Again
Author: hiding duh
Author on LJ: boonies
Fandom: Inuyasha
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: none
Why I like this fic: I have to admit up front that I don't watch Inuyasha as often as I should. But having said that, I adore Naraku. I don't really know why. I have this thing for villains, and evil characters in general, but that's a story for another day.

This fic is Naraku/Kagome in all its beautiful, wrong ways. The writing is sparse and perfect, every word like a knife.

Sum, by the same author, is another good one.

Rec: Stray Dogs [Cowboy Bebop, NC-17, yaoi] [07 Jul 2005|11:10pm]

Title: Stray Dogs
Author: Shrift
Author on LJ: shrift
Fandom: Cowboy Bebop
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: yaoi
Why I like this fic: It's second person, which usually has to be done very carefully and very precisely to be done right, and this fic fulfills both. Spike and Vicious just the way they should be, before Spike left, before Mao died, before everything fell apart.
