Reunion!!! [07 Feb 2008|11:20pm]

The Family Ties cast (Michael J. Fox, Meredith Baxter, Michael Gross, Justine Bateman, and Tina Yothers) reunited this morning on the Today Show! You can read about it here, and that article also has a link to their video interview (and make sure to also watch the video where they answer fan questions). Thanks foxywriter for sharing the link. I'm so happy to see them all together again!

Also, don't forget that season 3 comes out on DVD this Tuesday!

Kind and Compassionate Alex [10 Oct 2007|10:29am]

I'll have to say my favourite from Season Two is Baby Boy Doe, where he has a real pep talk with Skippy - after being rejected by his biological mother again.

Alex's Attitude Towards Women [10 Oct 2007|10:28am]

I have mixed feelings on the episode Ladies Man. I don't really know enough about the ERA to really have an opinion on the movement. At least, Alex did made it clear that he didn't agree with the hecklers that showed up at the ERA rally - and while he was dishonest about supporting the ERA, I think he truly was sincere about defending Deana's right to speak. I don't think he really dislikes women, and he did mention that he understood and respected the ERA cause - even if he didn't agree with it.

Wht are your thoughts?

A Keaton Christmas Carol [10 Oct 2007|10:27am]

I liked the overall plot for A Keaton Christmas Carol, but I have to admit I was bothered by the futuristic portayal of Alex P Keaton. Then again, the futuristic portrayal of Marty McFly was also a bit disturbing. Neither of them seemed to be especially pleasant people, which is generally not like them. It was also quite disturbing to see the living room modified to show the futuristic Keatons living in an impoverished condition.

Anyway, I guess this is something else Alex P Keaton and Marty McFly have in common. They both nearly avoided having terrible futures. Future Alex seemed so disturbing callous, while Future Marty generally just had a very bad attitude.

Did Alex ever use the word "harmony"? [20 Aug 2007|06:07pm]

I'm sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but "harmony" happens to be my favourite word - so I'm just curious. I know Mallory used that word twice in the Thanksgiving episode, when she argued that her parents were being stubborn for their cause because Thanksgiving is supposed to be about "peace and harmony in the family". Then Elyse also used the word in a flashback scene to Alex's birth in Africa.

Considering what I've heard about the episode where Alex manages Jennifer's band - which doesn't come until Season Five - it almost seems like Alex would have to use the word "harmony" in that episode, as it's my understanding that he wants Jennifer's band to be singing old songs three-part harmony style (a la The Andrews Sisters).

Anyway, I'm just asking out of curiosity.

ETA: I feel a little embarrassed asking this question, but it's just something that I'm curious about. Just so you know, I already tried searching Google - and I'm not really finding anything useful. The episode, Band on the Run, doesn't seem to have a transcript online anywhere. I was hoping that someone here has seen that episode and can let me know.

Was Alex P Keaton a positive role model to Alex? [28 Jul 2007|10:43pm]

I would that, for the most part, he is. Although, in Be True To Your Preschool, Alex did give his little brother bad advice (with regards to sharing). I would say, though, that he is affectionate and nurturing with his little brother. I haven't ever watched the episode with the quote when Andy claimed that Alex was telling him the story about Robin Hood, where one steals from the poor to feed the rich - but Andy probably just got the words "poor" and "rich" switched around. He is just a little kid, after all.

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

Yay! Tvshowsondvd.com announced the release of the second season of Family Ties on DVD. I was getting a little worried that they wouldn't release the rest of the seasons, but now I don't have to worry! Here is all the information, including cover art, a release date, and news about bonus features (even a little is better than season one's DVDs). October 9th seems so far away, but I can't wait!

When did Alex shine the most? [17 Jun 2007|08:53pm]

From the Family Ties article at TV Tropes:

Rather straightforward Dom Com in the 1980's.

Former flower children Steven (Michael Gross) and Elyse (Meredith Baxter-Birney) Keaton are now adults and raising three kids of their own, hyper-conservative Alex (Michael J. Fox in the role that made him a star), ditzy Mallory (Justine Bateman) and precocious Jennifer (Tina Yothers).

As stated, it was rather straightforward, though a lot of the humor came from the conflict between the Republican Alex and the very Democratic parents. In a rare example, there was no Strawman Political sequence to be found here: both ideologies were given equal time in the spotlight, and there was no Idiot Of The Week episode either.

In what episodes do you think Alex best portrayed the conservative side in a positive light, and how?

Also, in what episodes do you think Alex came out as being the most compassionate?

I know there were a few episodes where he really came through for his good buddy, Skippy - and his friendship with Skippy alone wins him points in my book. I mean, Skippy was pretty much of a misfit - and he maybe didn't have too many friends besides Alex. I really admire how Alex did not consider himself "too cool" to be friendly with Skippy.

Does anyone have any icons of Alex with his box? You know in the episode where Mallory befriends the girl who shoplifts.

Family Ties and Back to the Future [11 Jun 2007|01:24am]

Okay, I know I've been asking a lot of these kind of questions - but I just find it to be an interesting subject.

We know Family Ties exists within the BTTF Universe - as there was a brief scene in the Cafe '80s showing Family Ties on one of the TV sets. Do you think Back to the Future exists within the Family Ties Universe? The scene of Family Ties playing in the Cafe 80s in BTTF2 was so brief, it could easily be replaced with another 80s show (maybe the show that replaced Family Ties in the Family Ties Universe).

Anyway, do you think Marty McFly would enjoy watching Family Ties - and do you think Alex P Keaton may enjoy watching Back to the Future. Even though Alex doesn't really strike me as the kind of person to like sci-fi comedy movies - he may have a certain appreciation for Back to the Future, simply because the actor who plays Marty in the movie bears a striking resemblance to Alex. On the other hand, though, I could easily see Marty liking sitcoms - and he might Family Ties for reasons other than the fact that the actor who plays Alex bears a striking resemblance to Marty.

If Marty McFly and Alex P Keaton did ever meet each other (from two separate universes, where each is considered a fictional character in the other), I do wonder how they would get on. Of course, one would wonder how each would feel about discovering that they are fictional characters in the other universe - and that both are played by Michael J Fox.

I think Alex P Keaton is a very nice person, just a little opinionated at times.

Michael J Fox, Alex P Keaton, and Marty McFly [06 Jun 2007|09:48pm]

In 1985, Michael J Fox, Alex P Keaton, and Marty McFly all looked identical. They were three different ages, though. Marty was 17, Alex was 20, and Michael was 24. Perhaps, to confuse things even more, BTTF1 was filmed during the spring of 1985 - but the events of that movie take place during the fall of 1985. Of course, the sequels were filmed in 1989 and 1990 - and, in those movies, Michael was considerably older. However, in my BTTF Universe, I imagine Marty to look the way that he did in the first movie.

Anyway, here are a few things to ponder:

1. When Family Ties made its premiere in 1982, Alex P Keaton was 17 years old. Do you think Marty McFly at 14 looked the same way - or do you think he looked somewhat younger?

2. When Michael J Fox filmed that McDonald's advert in 1980 (that video might be at YouTube), he looked very young - but he still looked a bit older than 12, which is how old Marty McFly would've been in that year. Do you think Alex P Keaton looked like that at 15 years old?

3. At what year do you suppose Michael J Fox, Alex P Keaton, and Marty McFly all looked identical? Do you think the three of them looked identical since? Granted, I think Michael J Fox will look better in 2015 than 2015 Marty McFly did in BTTF2. However, that could easily be chalked up to the fact that Marty spent the last 30 years being miserable - so he maybe wasn't in the best condition. I think, in the improved timeline, Marty would look more like MJF will in 2015.

Anyway, what are your thoughts? I realize that Alex P Keaton and Marty McFly are fictional characters, and some may think that I overanalyze about that sort of stuff  - but, as a fanfic writer, I find it to be an interesting subject to consider.

What's the name of the episode that Geena Davis appeared in? She was doing a horrible job at being a housekeeper or something.
