The Great Escape

Hi All,

I was looking online for some information about David, and I got thinking about his movie "The Great Escape". One thing bothers me, however.

I've always thought of David's death scene at the train station as one of the great heroic moments of cinema: that Eric (David's character) willingly distracts the guards, although he knows he will be killed, so that his friends can escape.

However, I read online a couple of comments about Eric having instead freaked out at the train station, and got himself shot out of stupidity. I wondered if I was remembering the film correctly.

Is anyone who's seen the film more recently able to clear this up for me?
