Hello and welcome all the new dancers who have joined!!! Well this year dance is going well I have the lead in our competition production number and it is going very well. My lil sister /big sister program is running and off the ground again this year so proud of that! Our first competition is December 11th and only some of our numbers are going only if the costumes are in and they are completed and cleaned...our studio is competing 72 numbers this year so were pumped! Started looking at the colleges I want to go to for dance its so exciting to think about it and it seems like a long way away but its only 2 so its time to start thinking. I want to go close to home so I can teach at the studio I go to while in school to get my foot in the door to coach full time there when I finish and then own my own studio someday. well im out school time .. but once again welcome to all the new dancers!

Hi! I don't know why I suddenly decided to join, but I did, so here I am!

-:Basics:-
Name: Meg
Years Dancing: Ten
Studio: WSB and dance.fusion nw
Types of dance you take: Tap, Jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, ballet, pointe in jan. probably, broadway tap, broadway jazz, technique, performance tap & jazz
Favorite type of dance to dance: mmm, that'd be Broadway anything! oor..well, musical theatre, so pretty much anything that fits into that catagory. but Broadway is definitly my top!
Favorite type of dance to watch: That's hard, but again, probably Broadway style!
Favorite song to dance to: absolutly anything with a beat! Right now I have a slight obsession with Broadway's The Lion King soundtrack and I love doing stuff to that and I'm also learning the Broadway Revival of 42nd Street, slowly but surely, so that's another top...and then just stuff that I can rock out and just dance to!
Favorite move: I...I....there're too many! Anything Tap, anything Broadway, anything hard-core jazz.

-:Answer these questions:-
What do you plan on doing with your dance?: Right now I'm aiming for Pointe in ballet and strengthening my leaps and turns, but my Goal is Broadway. It's been a dream of mine since I was five or six and now I'm actually taking classes from a woman who just got off both Broadway and the Broadway Tour of 42nd Street, the 2001 revival, so it's pretty awesome. But yes, Broadway is my goal, as is any kind of Musical theatre. I want to be in The Lion King, Fame, The Phantom of the Opera, and anything else that comes up!
In your opinion, is dance a sport?: To me, dance can not be labeled. Yes, it fits in the sport catagory, it fits in the art catagory, but to me it fits into the Life catagory. people ask me all the time, "oh, so you dance?" and I'm say, "No. I'm a dancer." To me, it's a way of life.
What is your opinion about cheerleaders in regards to dance?: Two completely and totally different subjects. Personally I find cheerleading kind of pointless, but I have a bunch of friends who love it so I try not to judge. But it is nothing like dance, whatsoever. To me.
Do you ever find yourself walking around any place and not notice yourself dancing?: I never walk, so that would be a no. insomuchas I dance everywhere I go, and don't notice it. it bugs my non-dancer friends, and my mother, and the nice lady that I totally don't notice when I go to buy grocerys. so it's not like i ever walk, i'm always dancing, but i never notice. so...Yes?

Well, that was short!

Hi, I was browsing around here the other day and I came back to join. This community is awesome ^_^

-:Basics:-
Name: Stacy
Years Dancing: About 6 or 7
Studio: Neisha's Dance Academy
Types of dance you take: Ballet, Pointe, Partnering, tap, lyrical, jazz, hip hop, yoga, and I took modern last year.
Favorite type of dance to dance: Ballet or jazz.
Favorite type of dance to watch: Usually classical ballets

In your opinion, is dance a sport?: No, it isn't to me.
What is your opinion about cheerleaders in regards to dance?: No comment. To put it completely honest, and blunt, dancers in my opinion, are just better.
Do you ever find yourself walking around any place and not notice yourself dancing?: Of course not! I dance everywhere I go...kinda sad, really.

Hello! [16 Nov 2000|06:26pm]

[ mood | hopeful ]

I thought I'd join this community as it seems to be one of the few dance communities which hasn't been over-run with illiteracy :)

-:Basics:-
Name: I'm currently going by Bess online.
Years Dancing: three and a half.
Studio: n/a.
Types of dance you take: Russian ballet (incl. pointe). I've had to give up tap and contemporary due to university demands, but hope to take them up again when I graduate.
Favorite type of dance to dance: ballet.
Favorite type of dance to watch: Flamenco.
Favorite song to dance to: any of Vanessa-Nae's music.
Favorite move: Russian pas-de-chat.

-:Answer these questions:-
What do you plan on doing with your dance?: At the moment? Enjoying it for what it is. I spent my childhood longing for dance lessons which we couldn't afford, and spent hours trying to teach myself from books. So now that I finally am able to take lessons, I just want to continue having the opportunity to dance; having the opportunity to continue falling in love with this beautiful art.
In your opinion, is dance a sport?: Yes, I consider all exercise which can be competetive to be a sport. And dance fits that bill. However, whether a dancer regards their own dancing as a sport is entirely up to the individual, and depends on their personal experience of dance.
What is your opinion about cheerleaders in regards to dance?: We don't have cheerleading in Britain, so having never really seen it, I don't feel I can honestly say. I would imagine though, that cheerleading is something of a combination between dance and gymnastics, and that the nature of cheerleading itself gives it a more "sporty" stance than, say, tap dancing.
Do you ever find yourself walking around any place and not notice yourself dancing?: Oh, yes :) I try and curb it when alone in public, but if I'm with friends they don't seem too bothered!

[ mood | grateful ]

Hey all its been a crazy beginning of competition dance but good! I am teaching some of the younger girls helping to choreograph their jazz number! I am asstisting other classes and I love it I cant wait to own my own studio someday! I am on the jazz tap ballet pointe and production comp teams this year and just got the lead in our production number! I was very excited and happy I love production because its a huge group from our team (( their is 122 girls on my team )) so production is a great way to work with all age groups and be good role models to the younger girls..some older girls dont want to do it because there are younger girls in the number too but production is a fun number about 10 mins long and its great to be able to help the younger girls and have fun with your freinds at the same time. Many people dont realize that just helping a lil girl with steps or giving them encourangment means so much to them. I got a note yesterday from a coach from a lil girl in one of my classes that I help with and it was sooo nice she said what a good dancer I was and that when she gets older she wants to be just like me. Of course it went right up in my locker with all the pictures the lil girls draw me.. That is worth more than anything else to me it shows how much just sharing with younger girls and being a good role model really does make a difference. Well enough for now I have to go to school but I will leave you with this one quote that I have in my locker and use when I organize the big sister/lil sister dance program at my studio ((if any of you would like to know about the big sister/lil sister program I started with my competition team which is in its 2nd year now let me know I will give you all the info its just another way to make a differnce in a lil dancers life ))

There are little eyes upon you And they’re watching night and day.
There are little ears that quickly Take in everything you say.
There are little hands all eager To do anything you do;
And a little girl who’s dreaming Of the day she’ll be like you.

You’re the little girl’s idol, You’re the wisest of the wise.
In her little mind about you No suspicions ever rise.
She believes in you devoutly, Holds all that you say and do;
She will say and do, in your way, When she’s grown up like you.

There’s a wide-eyed little girl Who believes you’re always right;
And her eyes are always opened, And she watches day and night.
You are setting an example Every day in all you do,
For the little dancer who’s waiting To grow up to be like you.

Name: Katie
Years Dancing: I've been dancing for as long as I can remember, but professionally...almost 6 years.
Studio: Elite Dance Academy, Inc.
Types of dance you take: Ballet, lyrical, pointe, tap, jazz, character, hip hop, funk, and breakdance.
Favorite type of dance to dance: Ooh...between ballet and hip hop.
Favorite type of dance to watch: Ballet.
Favorite song to dance to: Right now that would be "We Run This" by Missy Elliott.
Favorite move: I'm not sure what the technical name is, but it's a backwards shoulder roll into prone...very pretty when done correctly. :) Lol. Some of the younger kids at my studio call them "fishes" but that's completely wrong, I know.

-:Answer these questions:-
Where do you plan on doing with your dance?: I plan on taking it to Broadway, baby! I would love to be Meg in Phantom of the Opera and stuff like that.
In your opinion, is dance a sport?: Where else does a sport take up your whole mind, body, and soul?
What is your opinion about cheerleaders in regards to dance?: Some can dance...but those "routines" need to be catagorized as a certain type like, oh, I dunno...cheerdance maybe?
Do you ever find yourself walking around any place and not notice yourself dancing?: Not even in my dreams, hon.

On another note, I'd just like to say how much I love dancers. We are such a passionate and caring and very underestimated group of crazy and wonderful people. Anyone in this community looking for a new fun friend can add me to their list because us dancers gotta stick togethah! lol. But seriously, though, I have held dancers in such high regard even way before I became one. I love y'all! Keep doing that thing ya do!

you know your a dancer when...

you know the butterfly not as an insect, but as a stretch

dance is life and the rest is just spare time

you sit in a straddle when you're watching tv

you are constantly re-doing your bun because the pony tail keeps hurting your face

your body cracks loud enough to stop your science class but you don't hear it

*people mistake you for a rubber band

full and out are the two main words in your vocabulary

getting one pair of new dance shoes is more exciting than your birthday

when you're at the mall you hear your dance song and you start dancing

you do ur toe heel while waiting in line

*watching TV is not a time to relax, it is a time to stretch

you do your dance routines in the parking lot and down the hallway

you are well coordinated in dance class but trip over your own feet just walking

a new dance makes your whole day

whenever you are bored instead of sitting at the computer you'll make up your own dance to your favorite song

everywhere is a place to dance

going from a leap into a pretzal fall on the floor doesn't sound that painful

you practice ur dances in your chair at school

*you dream of wearing those heavy, expensive, netting-ridden tutus

you not only dance everyday, but also every night in your dreams

you are stretching for gym and everyone goes, "WHOA!!"

your vocabulary includes bandaids, sweat, bleeding toes, determination, and guts

your toes are pointed whenever they leave the floor

all your friends are eating dinner while you are in class

you have the ability to balance your body on five toes, yet cannot bend over to pick the clothes up off the floor of your room

you never have to buy new halloween costumes. you just use old recital costumes

*your friends ask you to oversplit "just for fun!"

you have an entire drawer devoted to your dance stuff

*"so you think you can dance?" is the BEST show on this planet

you tend to hide your feet... you don't feel like grossing people out

*everything you do has to do with dance

you suddenly can't count past 8

you can learn the dances to music videos

you spot when doing the hussle at school dances

*Before everything you do you say 5,6,7,8

when you stand your feet are normally in a position (first or fifth mainly)

You laugh at a non-dancer when they say their feet hurt

you can talk about dance all day long to people that dont care

When you go to get your hair cut you tell them to cut it long enough to be able to @ least put it in a pony tail when u dance

*when you refer to half time of a football game as "intermission"

Every song that come on on the radio you know atleast 1 combo to

You noticed every mistake made on any dance movie or TV show

You have ever fallen asleep in a split or straddle.

*You have ever said "400 sit-ups no prob."

you never open bulletins but it said "dance" somewhere in the subject..... so you just had to see

....if ur a dancer REPOST THIS!!!!

Name: Sarah Rosecrans
Years Dancing:
14
Current Studio: The Peoria Ballet
Types of dance you take:
I have taken all sorts of different dance forms from ballet to step to hip hop, but my main concentrations were ballet (flat and pointe), jazz, tap and lyrical.  at the moment I am a teacher and i teach students ages 3 -17 in ballet, pointe tech, jazz, tap, lyrical, stretch and i run rehearsals.
Favorite type of dance to dance:
jazz and ballet
Favorite type of dance to watch:
jazz
Favorite song to dance to:
depends on what style i am dancing
Favorite move: again, depends on what style of dance i am doing

Where do you plan on doing with your dance?: Well, currently i am quite happy where i am at the moment.  i love teaching and as i have already danced professionally all over the United States i feel that it is time for me to move on to the next step which is sharing my knowledge with younger dancers.
In your opinion, is dance a sport?: yes, i believe that dance is very much a sport, however it is also just as much of an art form.  many people have disagreed with me when i have said that dance is a sport, however i feel that dance is harder than many competitive sports such as soccer and football, so therefore it is a sport.
What is your opinion about cheerleaders in regards to dance?: cheerleading and dance are to totally different things.  while many cheerleaders dance as well to improve their technique cheerleading is totally different from dancing.
Do you ever find yourself walking around any place and not notice yourself dancing?: actually yes.  i tend to get weird looks if i dance threw the corridors at college.  however i have been told by many people that i look like a ballet dancer when i walk because i walk with my legs turned out and my toes pointed.

[ mood | okay ]

Hey everybody! I'm Merel from the Netherlands, I'm a student at a Show Musical Dance Academy and this group seems interesting to me, so I joined ;) here my answers to the questions

-:Basics:-
Name: Merel

Years Dancing: 2 (at two different academys) 5 years totally

Studio: Dance Academy in the Netherlands (Dansacademie Noord Nederland)

Types of dance you take: showmusical dance, hiphop, streetdance, ballet, modern dance, lyrical, jazz, ballroom, tap

Favorite type of dance to dance: haven't got a favourite...lyrical, modern, musical, ballroom...hmmm I really can't choose

Favorite type of dance to watch: musical and modern/lyrical

Favorite song to dance to: at the moment...Josh Groban - Si Volvieras A Mi, Bsb - Rushing throug me & Beautiful Woman, Heather Small - Proud, PussyCat Dolls - Don't Cha, Elisa - Dancing, Ghostland - Interview With The Angel, Me'Shell Ndegeocello - Fool of Me, Moulin Rouge - El Tango de Roxanne, Missy Elliot - Lose Control, Madonna - Hanky Panky ..and many many more....

Favorite move: too many...not a special one, I like offbalance, groovy moves, sexy moves, lyrical moves...

-:Answer these questions:-
Where do you plan on doing with your dance?: I want to do as many things as possible, want to see all the aspects of the dance world. Musical for sure, and I really hope I can do something modern and lyrical once. But not only as performer, I hope to do a lot of things with choreography, I really love to create dances.

In your opinion, is dance a sport?: Dance is no sport, dance is a passion, an art. But I do think that in the physical way, dance definitly is a sport...what I mean is that many people underestimate dancing, but next to the romantic picture, the dancers world is a tough world

What is your opinion about cheerleaders in regards to dance?: Cheerleading is, in my opinion, totally different. Cheerleading is meant as support, a beautiful body, a nice smile and high legs are more important than the passion and feeling, which are the most important ingredients of a good dance performance in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I definitly have respect for cheerleaders, but I think dance and cheerleading are two different things, though they have many things in common, the motive of both disciplines is not comparable.

I just posted a comment to the last entry with some good information about pointe work. I also listed some websites that tell about why not everyone gets to go on pointe at a certain age. Pretty much, because you could get hurt, but there is stuff you can do to see that you are ready for pointe! I also, just joined so I am gonna post my info here on the site. It is also in a previous comment.

Name: Holly

Years Dancing: 22 years (I'm 24)

Studio: Caston Ballet Academie (St. Louis, Missouri); Caston Chamber Ballet Sr. Company Member

Types of dance you take: Ballet, Hip Hop, Ballet, and more Ballet (I have taken tons of different types of dance over the years, everything from swing to salsa to tap to modern to lyrical to hip hop to kickline specialty classes, but These are the classes I am taking now)

Favorite type of dance to dance: Ballet (The fast stuff! Not the slow flowy stuff)

Favorite type of dance to watch: Ballet (Don Quixote and Romeo and Juliet)

Favorite song to dance to: Salsa, Meringue, and Latin Music in general

Favorite move: Grande Jetes! tour jetes! fouettes! attitude turns!, arabesque turns!, and battments! (I hate pirouettes)

-:Answer these questions:-
What do you plan on doing with your dance?: I have already gone where I want to go with my dancing! I am dancing in a company, teaching when they need my help at the studio, and using dance as a relief from law school! Even though I didn't end up in a big company like I dreamed of and trained for at 16, I am still getting to do what I love!

In your opinion, is dance a sport?: Dance to me is not a sport. Dance is an art form. It is about lines and expression more than precision. I like to think of it like a little flip book of drawings. Each new page has a different picture. Each move in dance creates a different picture. Your body is your brush! Everyone's body is different and so each person has a different brushstroke to add to the painting. That is what makes it beautiful! And is also how I look at choreography!

What is your opinion about cheerleaders in regards to dance?: Cheerleaders are a different thing all together. They are not dancers. They are cheerleaders. They might do some dance moves, but they also do gymnastics. I do not know many cheerleaders who would tell you they are gymnasts. So just doing a few dance moves doesn't make you a dancer either. But cheerleading is an excellent sport and good for building muscle strength. If you are involved in cheerleading seriously, and pick up some pilates to elongate your muscles it could actually be helpful to your dancing. It does teach teamwork, dedication, and precision. All of those things are useful in both dance, school, and life. But be careful not to injury yourself! Injuries can set a dancer back from advancing like they want to and can weaken your body. The last thing a dancer needs is a weak body!

Do you ever find yourself walking around any place and not notice yourself dancing?: I didn't know I could walk without dancing. To me every movement and every nonmovement is dancing! Standing still is just as important as walking which is just as important as running, which is just as important as leaping! And I love to leap! Dance is as much about how you carry yourself with confidence and poise as it is about moving!

The most important part of dance to me is that it helps you to express yourself! If you are sad throw it into your dancing! I love to dance when I am angry. I advance quickly because I am brooding and just want to dance as hard as I can to get all my anger out. By the time I get through dancing it is all gone! Plus, dancing is great for those wierd moods you have and you don't know how to express them. You know the crying, happy, sad, confused, my boyfriend broke up with me, my best friend made me a surprise, my family just doesn't get me, my dog is not even my buddy today, I want some flowers, a bubble bath, and chocolates moods. We all have them.

Dancing has got me through some of the toughest and best times in my life. I always wanted to perform, I love being on stage! I love tutus and buns, black leotards and pink tights! and pretty pointe shoes with ribbons! Almost as much as I love exclamation points!!!! Even though as a career I will be a lawyer in about a year, ballet will always be special to me and I will always find time to dance!

I would like to be a dancer, like a back up dancer, but I am not sure I am in the financial postion to try that, becasue it is such a one shot business, and I am not really the best out there, but I will defiently keep doing it all my life, maybe as a teacher when I am abit older.
In your opinion, is dance a sport?:
Since I am not really good at usual sports I tell everyone it is. I really think it is more physically demanding then most sports, but it is more of an art. I guess it is really both. i mean have you ever heard the saying if dance where any easier it would be called football? That is what I tell everyone, becasue it so true! So yes, it is a sport, and an art form together, and that is what makes it harder then any sport out there!
What is your opinion about cheerleaders in regards to dance?:
How many of you have seen the movie Bring it on? Cheerleaders are dancers that are retarded! Aha, I loved that part, but honestly I think cheerleading is really cool. It is alot easier then dance, but I think that they do more flips, so they are cool. I think cheerleading is the more sport and loud part of dance. The part that was left out, and they felt they needed it somewhere, so they used it in cheerleading. Dance is way better though ♥!
Do you ever find yourself walking around any place and not notice yourself dancing?:
Aha, I seriously thought I was the only one that did that, becasue all my friends that dance say I am crazy.
