Rest in Paradise, Bettie Page.

You truly were a legend.

Bettie Page, the 1950s secretary-turned-model whose controversial photographs in skimpy attire or none at all helped set the stage for the 1960s sexual revolution, died Thursday. She was 85.

Page was placed on life support last week after suffering a heart attack in Los Angeles and never regained consciousness, said her agent, Mark Roesler. He said he and Page's family agreed to remove life support. Before the heart attack, Page had been hospitalized for three weeks with pneumonia.

"She captured the imagination of a generation of men and women with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality," Roesler said. "She is the embodiment of beauty.

Page, who was also known as Betty, attracted national attention with magazine photographs of her sensuous figure in bikinis and see-through lingerie that were quickly tacked up on walls in military barracks, garages and elsewhere, where they remained for years.

Her photos included a centerfold in the January 1955 issue of then-fledgling Playboy magazine, as well as controversial sadomasochistic poses.

"I think that she was a remarkable lady, an iconic figure in pop culture who influenced sexuality, taste in fashion, someone who had a tremendous impact on our society," Playboy founder Hugh Hefner told The Associated Press on Thursday. "She was a very dear person.

The Notorious Bettie Page [12 Oct 2006|09:47am]

[ mood | pleased ]

I've been awfully busy so this is the first chance I've had to put down my thoughts on this movie, which I finally saw this past weekend.

As biopics go The Notorious Bettie Page is no Frida, but thankfully it's not The Doors, either. I enjoyed it, though I expected a bit more, but at least it didn't outrage me like The Doors did.

It's true I'm no expert on Bettie Page. I know very little about her life, but enough to be fairly certain what the film got right and what it didn't. I don't know what really happened in certain parts, but I can definitely see one thing it got very wrong and something that everyone who knows Ms. Page--including the woman herself--has pointed out.

The Bettie Page in this film is so damned naive that she's practically stupid. She thinks that the bondage pictures she did for the Klaws are just "playing around in costumes." Somehow I think the real Bettie actually knew what was going on.

Otherwise the film delivers pretty well on its promise. Gretchen Mol actually makes a great Bettie, even if her butt is slightly smaller and her face isn't quite dead-on. The recreations of many of her infamous shots are well-done--although somebody got confused during one of the Bunny Yeager recreations and Bettie is seen posing with leopards instead of cheetahs. Personally, I was glad the film didn't focus too hard on the Klaw shoots as, personally, I was never all that fond of those pictures. However, it does not even touch on the Teaserama type films that Bettie was in, despite devoting some time to her unsuccessful attempt at film acting.

There is an unpleasant scene early on where a group of men apparently force Bettie to perform sexual acts on them that I have never heard of happening before. (By apparently I mean the film hankfully only implies what is about to happen) Frankly, unless it truly happened, the scene does not need to exist. Prior to it we see a well done montage of Bettie's failed marriage that would have been sufficient to explain her desire to leave Nashville, and the rape scene ulimately has no effect on the plot. You would think such an incident would have taught Bettie about learning not to be so naive in the future--yet if anything, she behaves more naive.

Beyond that scene, I really liked the film. I highly recommend it--even if it isn't entirely accurate. After all, Frida takes a certain amount of liberty with the life of Frida Kahlo and still managed to be an excelent film.

Dinner break... [27 Jun 2006|06:25pm]

I decided to paint in atmosphere and add depth first, before detail and realistic hair to Bettie. I added grass, ground-shadows, and color reflections on the plane. Then I blurred the plane and painted in a warm color humid haze between Bettie and the background. I'll add clothing detail and color reflections to Bettie 's skin, hair and clothes next.

Back to my Bettie painting... [27 Jun 2006|03:13pm]

Various stuff kept me away from it. I just roughed in more of the environment. I'm adding general detail to everything. After fine detail, I'll add reflective colors to everything.
