Andrea S.’ Teddy Bear, circa 1963, private collection
Baerlihupf is the name of the teddy bear that accompanied twelve-year old Andrea, her thirteen-year old sister and father during their escape from East Berlin to Frankfurt am Main. The family had arranged to meet an escape agent at a motorway service area, and there the teddy bear’s function was to indicate whether – or not – all was well. Carried by the father, the teddy bear would signal the need for caution; tucked in Andrea’s arm, Baerlihupf sent the message that the coast was clear. With Baerlihupf, the family was able to escape: all were able to stow away in the trunk of a car designed for escapees, and, in this fashion, to pass through the border controls without being discovered.

Я зову его Герхард-Хранитель кладовки
но кто знает, может это ключик вовсе и не от съестных запасов, а от чего-то сердца?
