The Spine Carries the Ghost [17 Jul 2014|04:13pm]

They go about in little hurries
Across town or across state, denizens
But from where I sit they rush
Rush rush rush very little;
Cooking breakfast, listening to the poet,
Driving to banks, jobs, stores.
Behind them all I lie awake in bed
That sad hoot finds me, hangs about my head.

This is not a train town,
This Hampton Roads,
But everywhere I go in this area, or at least most
That lonely whistle floats in like a ghost.

Sometimes I think no one else receives that signal
To come to contemplate
Think of the greater weight
But once or twice, now and then, at that croon
Another head across the room
With a sorry mournful eye
For a moment their glance catches mine
And we know, and then we go back to alone.

Yet we, the raw nerves of this town
We may be connected by that same spine
Rails, ties, tones
That flows through the body of this area.

Water Under the Bridge [26 Oct 2010|03:31pm]

And of the sad lines that were written
Where the trees or the moon or the thronging crowds
Act upon the poet to cause greater sorrow still,
I know its not so

I know its not so
As they’ve never done anything to me before,
Except this one time
For the tall thin trees.

And the tall thin trees
Swayed violently and hissed with wind all night
And the whole scene simulated a drunken crowd
Backlit by the moon.

Then there was a time
That the house became overtly vacuous
And expansively cavernous
As it responded to emptiness I felt.

But I’ve found that really
Water under the bridge usually feels
Nothing like … it’s never just
Water under the bridge.

The bridge lies over the water
Near the end of a long day’s drive from work
And near the beginning
Of the next morning’s mission to be on time.

I spend not less than ten minutes a day
With this water on our mutual journeys
I traveling home and it forever leaving
The place that it’s from.

I’ll tell you its range of emotion
That’s only beginning there.
Sometimes the river is lost and alone and
Knows I sometimes despair upon going home.

Sometimes the waters are quiet
And full of forgiveness,
The way waters under bridges should be
With a little burble of actual contentedness

But then sometimes when I see the waters
Lying there flatly, too flatly.
I know that all is not forgiven,
It’s not just water under the bridge then

That the water under the bridge
Merely chronicles some offenses for later.
Staring, it returns just its flat affect
Not belying the depths at which it roils.

Other times it’s like the river
Just cannot control itself
Between fits of rage and mumblings
Where outright aggression shows.

The water even paces the length of the bridge
Unable to contain its impatience.
Rolling along silent, but like mouthing
Its wide brow furrowed roundly

And in a final show of how hard forgiveness is to come by
The water under the bridge
Stabs out with peaks and crests
Loudly seeking to strike, to do damage.

It even loses focus of it’s anger I’ve seen
It crashes over the bridge, reaching for unforgivable me
And stabs at the sky with accusations and
Even crashes with the most violence against itself.

How like the people at the other ends
Of my daily journey that have
so little sway with their emotions
That are always swayed by them.

And on one end are contented to
Happily lap at my shores in the sun
And rant wildly for hours and not know why
Just like water under the bridge

I’ve said it before and its ominous to me
How like the feelings in our hearts, heads and hands
Sometimes water under the bridge
Isn’t just water under the bridge.

Where can I find a venue for New Year's Eve?

Hey, I'm planning on having a New Year's party with about 20-30 guests and a small band.  I've been all over the place looking for a good venue.  I don't think I can find a club on a holiday, I can't use a club house, hotel event rooms are expensive, and I don't have friends with big houses.

Does anyone know where I can find a place to party at a reasonable price?

Help would be GREATLY appreciated.

HI! I'm new! I joined mostly because it's like 4 am and I'm really bored, but also because I figured maybe I wouldn't be so bored if I was the member of a community that actually talked about what's going on in my city. Anyway, I'm Robin, and I'm 20, and i go to TCC, and live in bayview which is like near ocean view. oh and that drawing thing at relative theory looks really fun too bad I can't draw or I'd go.

Dance class? [20 May 2006|06:39pm]

Hey guys, I'm trying to look for a good dance/ballet/gymnastics program for my 3 yr old starting in the fall (or even this summer if there is one available!) that won't take my whole paycheck every month (and trust me, my job DOES NOT pay that well when you think about supporting 2 kids and myself). I'm mainly looking for something in the Hampton or Norfolk area (and by Norfolk I mean as close to Hampton like OV as possible). She loves to dance and I was hoping to get her started as early as I can. Any help would be appreciated :)

March of Dimes/WalkAmerica---please donate [20 Feb 2006|11:17am]

Hey guys, I know some of you can't really afford to be giving all your money away, but I do need sponsors for this event I'm doing for March of Dimes called WalkAmerica. It's April 30th and my goal is $500 but I'm sure at this point I'm not going to be able to raise that much, but it would be nice to get close to it.

As some of you already know, both my girls were premature, Lola being born 6 weeks early (5 lbs 3 oz) and Alana being born 4 months early (1 lb 6 oz). So this is a cause pretty close to my heart and actually what inspired me to change my major to nursing.

Here is a picture of Alana a week or 2 after she was born.

She has tubes in her chest bcuz her lungs collapsed due to a heart condition called Patent Ductus Arteriosus she was born w/and shortly after had to have surgery for. By the time she was 10 months old she had had 6 surgeries, and it's possible she is having another one, which I find out about on friday. As my close friends know, she's doing a lot better now, but she's isn't going to have what most people consider a 'normal' childhood bcuz of her so-called disabilities. She's almost 2 now. The March of Dimes raises awareness of premature birth and try to educate mothers, especially young mothers, on ways to prevent having their babies so early, like how Alana was. Our case was a little luckier than others. Not every baby born at 23 weeks survives, reason why Alana is our 'miracle baby'.

The event is on April 30th, at the Virgina Beach Oceanfront. There's the option of forming a team, which I'm up for doing if anyone else wants to participate. Just let me know.

You can go to my site to sponsor me. All donations go straight to the March of Dimes. http://www.walkamerica.org/xheathercx

And please repost this so others who aren't on my friends list can see and possibly help out. Thanks. :)

Haunted Norfolk [16 Apr 2005|02:14am]

[ mood | chipper ]

Norfolk - City Jail - Many people have reported seeing a man walk the halls on various floors of this jail. The sightings are usually seen by the night shift, and are attributed to the natural death of a previous inmate.

Norfolk - Craney Island Fuel Depot - Reports of a Civil War soldier, the sound of a horse.

Norfolk - Gresham Dorms - About 2 years ago a couple was murdered in the parking lot between Gresham Main and East. The killer(s) were never found and the couple's souls were never put to rest. It is said the woman can be fould walking around bleeding from gun shots, trying to find help for her dead husband. This usually happens towards the end of the month, and many nights in November, the month they were killed.

Norfolk - USS Caron - In the forward 5" Gun Mount, below the decks, a large man in a khaki uniform is seen by sailors out of the corner of their eye or, in some instances, plain as day. The story goes that he was a Gunner's Mate Chief and he went up in the mount to perform maintenance one day without utilizing a safety mechanism and was crushed to death inside the mount when the loader activated. Now he is seen mainly at night inside the mount near the control panels by sailors passing their duty days inside the mount.- February 2005 Update: It has been decommissioned and sunk.

Norfolk - USS Cole - In the Engineering space where the ship was hit if you are working alone your tools will be moved on you and you can feel a presence of someone watching you. In the Hall of Heroes by the mess decks you can hear your name being called by an unseen woman. The ghosts just want to let people know that they are watching us

Norfolk - USS George Washington - As strange as it sounds for a U.S. Navy ship to be haunted with a little girl, that appears to be what is happening. One of the few things on the GW. Multiple people have said that they have seen her in the lower levels of the Engineering spaces. One saw her in a pink and white dress. Another saw her in a blue dress and when he tried to get closer she was gone. Another sailor said that he had seen a guard dog on one of his tours, but the dog disappeared as soon as he got closer to it. There have been reports of strange noises, like the sound of someone jingling their keys as they walk down the stairs but there is no one on the stairs. One time a man walked halfway down the stairs but never made it to the bottom. Two gentlemen standing near watched him start his journey before he disappeared. Another group of men have seen a man walking through equipment before going out of sight. Once they investigated they found no one in the space. Other strange things happen as well, shoulder tapping, strange sounds, shadows, tools moving in the middle of the night. And most of all, the overwhelming sensation of being watched from every nook and cranny of the space.

Norfolk - Weslyn - A girl haunts the women?s residency. She sits in a chair at night and follows anyone who comes in late or who gets up and walks to the bathroom where she supposedly had died. She is a mean ghost and has frightened many women at this college with her wicked stare as she follows them.
