Hi! I want to tell you about a new community I created. It's called music_posts and it's basically a place where people can go and ramble about music. The other night, I was listening to a song and was incredibly touched by it. I wanted to tell the whole world about how much I loved that song and that artist. I felt that there should be a place on live journal for people to do just that. So, please check it out if you're interested!

Hi! I'm Terra! I'm new here. I'm 15 years old, a sophomore in high school.
I play...well...okay.
I've been playing piano since I was about 8 years old, so I've been taking lessons for 7 years now. I'm currently the most advanced student my teacher has. ^_^ I love playing ragtime music especially, and lots of pop music.

I also play flute in the school's band. I've been playing for hmm... five years now, I guess. I'm not that great on flute, and to be honest I'd chose piano over flute any day.
And well, next year I'm actually switching instruments. One day earlier this year, our director was passing out new music and basically said oh, you flutes don't play a lot in this song. Which one of you plays piano? Here's a mallet percussion part! So since then I've been half flute, half mallet percussion. I like to play me some xylophone. :) So junior year registration came around and he has me sign up for Wind Ensemble, our top band, on mallet percussion!. I'm actually quite excited about that.

1. What's your favourite instrument?
Piano, definitely.

2. What's your favourite genre of music?
To play or listen to? To listen to, alternative rock, definitely. To play, I absolutely LOVE ragtime!

3. Are you/were you ever in band?
Band geeks for life! :D This is my 6th year in band!

4. Can you read music?
Yes! Treble clef and bass clef. I could probably read alto clef if I tried, but would most likely fail miserably :P

Hope all is going well. I just wanted to let everyone know that I recently launched a website that may be of interest called Piano Lessons with Master Teachers. If you click the black and white photograph on the home page, it will take you to a collection interviews with concert pianists from the early 1900's, such as Paderewski and Ernest Schelling. It's a very good read, and it's all free material. I hope it can be a good resource for some of the community members.

Take care,

Hey, I've just joined, and it's customary to introduce yourself once you join. . . .here I am!

XD Well, my name is Cookie, I'm 15 and I sing and play piano, both at Grade 4 (Though I've only taken one exam, and I'm really proud of that!! ^^) and I used to also play the flute (I think I did Grade 1) and recorder (Like the rest of us did in primary)
I like to play a lot of stuff from musicals, only because I think it's alot more emotional and nicer to play, and I also do some game music (sad, I know) and popular songs!

1. What's your favourite instrument? The piano, and my voice, though the double bass sounds great!
2. What's your favourite genre of music? I prefer rock and punk, but have a secret love of classical and Asian music, J-pop and all sorts
3. Are you/were you ever in band? Well, I sing in a choir, and have had numerous offers to be a lead singer in my friends rock bands (Everyone is in one!)
4. Can you read music? Yes, sight-reading is easy, unless it's one of those Specimen pieces they give you in exams, they suck :P But yeah, I can read music, pretty well too ^_^

Well, I suppose thats all for now, I'll post again sometime soon!

Hey, I've just joined. My name is Liz and I've been involved in music pretty much all my life. Mainly I'm a vocalist (currently training in classical and musical theatre) and I also play piano, bass guitar, aux. percussion and I used to play flute (haven't actually picked it up in a while..). I'm in my second year studying contemporary music, and next year hope to go on to musical theatre.

1. What's your favourite instrument? Piano. I love listening to people that actually know how to play:)
2. What's your favourite genre of music? I listen to pretty much everything, depending on my mood. I like metal, rock, punk cabaret, musical theatre and spanish music.
3. Are you/were you ever in band? I'm currently in an ecclectic rock (that's what we've called our style.. it's a mix of all types of rock- rockabilly, hard rock, punk rock, etc) band called Lemur Scream. When I was in high school I was in (and captain of) the Concert Band where I played first flute.. we were actually pretty good! hehe.
4. Can you read music? Yep.

warning: total, utter newbie approaching.
Hello everybody. Nice to "meet" you all. here comes the intro post:

I may be a slightly unusual case. I'm 21 years old and have no practical music experience at all. Like, at all.

What I've got is a very basic course in music theory from my local university, and an interest in learning music. Most people start a lot younger, but back in grade school when everybody else was taking band, I didn't get the chance.

So I decided to take up a new hobby, and start learning about music. There's a quote I heard from Zimbabwe: "If you can talk, you can sing. If you can walk, you can dance."

Would anybody here have a suggestion on where to begin? I tried out a cheap plastic kid's recorder, but I didn't really like the sound very much. What I'd like to do is save up and get a digital piano keyboard and learn how to play it. (A real piano wouldn't be practical because I'm a college student and I move around a lot.) I want to learn to play just for myself (no ambitions of performance here), and maybe do some composing.

favorite instrument: hmm, maybe cello. I love those deep, expressive sounds.
favorite genre: Depends on my mood! Mostly alternative, sometimes pop, jazz, classical or hard rock if I feel like it. I even like some video game and movie soundtracks (/geekness)
ever played in a band? No.
can you read music: Yes, but only real slow and with moving lips ;) I'm still pretty new at it.

'Allo all =D
I play: (in order of most skill)
Saxophone (Alto, Bari, Tenor... and hopefully soprano soon!), Guitar (electric and acoustic), Piano, Flute, Clarinet, Electric violin (trying to learn it, but it comes out of tune too easily), Bass guitar (Yet another reason to relearn bass), and a myriad of other small instruments like penny whistles and xylophones.

Currently 17 and in my Junior year of high school. Girl power. Been playing saxophone since 4th grade, piano since 2nd but I obviously stopped when I broke my arm. Finally picking it up again though. Guitar since my freshman year, violin since last summer, bass is my brother's but I've been stealing it to dabble on. The others I've had a chance to play on in band while switching instruments.

1. What's your favorite instrument?
Acoustic guitar and tenor saxophone
2. What's your favorite genre of music?
Rock is my favorite but I tend to like anything but country (folk music is SO not country)
3. Are you/were you ever in band?
Jazz band, school band, trying out for honor band (might make it, might not, I haven't practiced much for it)
4. Can you read music?
I can read treble, I'm trying to mash bass in my head so I can brush up on my piano and not have to write the notes into treble to translate them =P

I'm making an attempt to write, record, edit, and mix music on my computer. Too bad the sound card sucks. Why, oh why, did I get the graphics card instead?
