Men who have a pierced ear are better prepared for marriage -
they've experienced pain and bought jewelry.
- Rita Rudner
Saturday, June 23 ~ Afternoon

Roger was having his first good day in weeks - hell, in over a month truth be told. All thanks to Severus Snape. (And Poppy, but Snape was the initial cause and didn't have access to his body if he were to meet with some horrible accident so he'd stick to blaming the one that might not be in control of saving his life someday, thanks. At the very least she had control of the pain relievers.)

The sadistic bastard had to pay.

Roger was determined to find a way to turn Snape into aCollapse )

If you carry your childhood with you, you never become older.
- Abraham Sutzkever
Saturday, May 5th ~ Afternoon

Roger grabbed a bottle of ale and set the broom he had just dismounted carefully aside. Looking around he couldn't keep the grin off his face. Some friends, a picnic, a few rounds of Quidditch, and a cold ale to drink - there was no better way to celebrate your birthday in his opinion.

And the best was yet to come.

Roger made his way over to Vera, thinking of the surprise he had enlisted the house elves help in setting up back in his quarters. Roger couldn't stop smiling as he plopped down next to his - hopefully - future wife and gave her a kiss.

"And what have you been up to?"

Ain't Misbehavin'
Wednesday, May 2 • Early morning

The chime of the clock in the other room sounded midnight, and Vera gave herself one last look-over in the mirror.

She'd begun to notice more fine lines, lately. Oh, the slight wrinkles in the forehead were nothing new — lines of concentration from night after night staring at fields of numbers.

The laugh lines, however. Those were a relatively recent development.Collapse )

WWN Broadcast
Friday, April 6th ~ Evening

"This is Rita Skeeter, standing just outside, around the back, in an alley behind, the Three Broomsticks, where a reception for one of Hogsmeade's former most eligible bachelor's - and his blushing bride - is taking place, to bring you a WWN exclusive."

"Can it, Anastasia, I don't care who got the assignment from the boss, the story is Mine. Keep it up, and I just might forget to take that gag off before I leave. Understand?"

"Now, where was I? Oh, yes, the quicky wedding of hunky recluse and defense school owner, Harry Potter, to restaurateur and frump, Daphne Greengrass occurred weeks ago with almost no fanfare and a tragically small guest list. Once word of the marriage hit the streets, some of the most delicious rumors began to circulate over the mysterious circumstances behind the event."

"Some sources say the couple had been estranged, and were shocked to hear of the wedding when I told them, still others speculated on the need for such a rapid and quiet affair. So far there are no signs of impending motherhood - although the bride has been carrying a few extra pounds for quite some time - but one can't help but wonder if there might be a new member of the Potter family showing up soon."

"What? I said if, they can't sue us for merely voicing some of the public opinion, Anastasia. Stop being such a worrywart."

"As always, ladies and gentlemen, WWN is always interested in the comments and concerns of our listeners. More importantly, if you personally witnessed a sensational bit of scandal, owl me, Rita Skeeter, care of the WWN. The Wizarding Wireless Network now returns you to our regularly scheduled programing."

Are you made of calcium, or are you carbon based?
'Cause if you're made of calcium, I'll have to take a taste
Calcium is deadly, but tender to the tooth
But it's one sure-fire way to know if you're MX-missile proof
Sunday, March 25 :: Afternoon

I should have run a chart before we left — I would have thought the situations would have been reversed.

Really, who could have predicted? First, that Roger would have been able to convince Vector to go along on a "Rollerstroll" around London, and secondly that of the two of them, she'd be the one to manage to stay upright for the most part.

"You're sure you don't want to let them look at it before we head home, darling?" Vera rubbed Roger's back and looked worriedly at his ankle.

"Can you put your weight on it?"

To celebrate the joining of Harry James Potter and Daphne Diane Greengrass in the bonds of matrimony.

Tuesday, March 13th ~ Early Evening

Hedwig had nearly flown herself into exhaustion, but each of the handful of invitations had made it to their intended recipients in record time.

The ceremony was small and quick. The bride wore the same robes her mother had been married in, the groom a suit. Their friends had gathered in the window room over looking the lake, and Severus Snape gave the bride away.

Wednesday, March 7th ~ Evening

Roger had held the door to his quarters open for Vera and immediatly after entering, tossed the teaching robes he had worn to dinner over his jeans and t-shirt (something about being 'professional') into a pile in the corner.

"Just the two of us, whatever will we do?" Roger asked Vera in a tone indicating that he might have a few ideas in mind.

WWN Broadcast
Wednesday, February 14th ~ Evening

"We interrupt the 'Lover's Serenade' to bring you news from the Black Orchid Hotel. This is good, so straighten your clothes and listen to Rita for a moment, you lucky lovers out there.

"Witnesses say Healers from St. Mungo's had to be called to the scene because of a scandalous outbreak on the main dancefloor.

"Spokespeople for the Malfoy-owned establishment had no official comment to give, but according to guests it was socialite and friend of the family Pansy Parkinson who caused the disturbance. Gentlemen, please, if you're going to start panting and rioting over a witch, do it over someone with her own nose. This is 100-percent Skeeter here — get it while it's hot!

"Apparently the scene has quieted down now, but with a near-orgy going on out in the open, who knows what might have happened in the more secluded rooms? Shocking behavior indeed to be linked with one of the wizarding world's stiffly upstanding (Floo me, Lucius!) families.

"As always, ladies and gentlemen, WWN is always interested in the comments and concerns of our listeners. More importantly, if you personally witnessed a sensational bit of scandal, owl me, Rita Skeeter, care of the WWN. "So, other than having to come in to London to shepherd some people home ... how was your evening?"

Vera had had a hangover potion, and was feeling ever so slightly better, if one discounted the shame from having to be fetched home like a teenager in need of supervision.

WWN News Update
Saturday, January 6 ~ Evening

"... And as parents across the commonwealth well know, this weekend the Hogwarts Express will speed across the land to bring the students back to their books.

"Tonight, though, the members of the Board of Governors and select members of the Hogsmeade community were welcomed to the castle ahead of the start of second term by the staff.

"Percy Weasley, the director of the Hogsmeade Ministry office, spoke at length and quite knowlegeably about traditional and non-traditional spellcasting methods.

"So, students, take comfort in this as you head back to class: even over the holidays, your teachers went in for a little learning themselves."

"Never too old, eh?"

The sound of a door creaking open floated over the airwaves, and if one listened closely, a fiercely whispered exchange could be heard:

"Tell them about the after-party! The drunken debauchery! Tell them what really happened!"

"Rita, get the hell out of here! You don't have any sources, we'll get sued ..."

"Some greedy witch got engaged before I could have a fair crack at the groom-to-be! That's injustice! I should write an editorial ..."

A fierce rustling was heard, and the original voice returned.

"This has been Ezekiel Brunderbluss with your evening news and as always ladies and gentlemen WWN is interested in the comments and concerns of our listeners. If you have one, please contact us by owl or floo. We appreciate the interest shown and will respond as soon as possible. The Wizarding Wireless Network now returns you to our regularly scheduled programing."

Monday, December 11 * Afternoon

Vector stood at the head of the staff lounge, running briskly and efficiently through a parchment scroll of party plans.

"There will be no music, and entertainment will come in the form of an after-dinner lecture. I've found a supremely tedious man who does 20 minutes on the dietary habits of Wilfred Elphick."

"Board member Higgins will be ready to leave following the truite au bleu, because he is frightened of fish, even if they are prepared perfectly in court bouillon. The Martinses will be offended that we're going with a French menu instead of a traditional English."

"In short, I believe all the undesirables will be ready to leave by 8 at the latest, due to the highly unfashionable start time we've selected."

"At which point, restraint of the ..." Vera paused and closed her eyes, before using what Roger had insisted was the proper terminology, "'newbies and virgins' will be left up to my partner in crime and the real party may begin."

She folded her arms and looked around the room, quite pleased with herself on the whole.

"Questions?"

Monday, November 27 * Evening

"Honestly!" Vera's voice rang through the semi-crowded pub.

"It's like the second coming of the Weasley twins — but why did they have to choose both the Great Hall and the second floor classrooms? The smell will linger for days, mark my words."

The Arithmancy professor groused some more, grumbling loudly enough to get the elderly wizard sitting alone at the large table in the middle of the 'Sticks to clear off to a quieter corner where he could nurse his ale in peace.

Yes, yes, there's history involved. The important thing is that you get to make a really big fire!

Sunday, November 5th - Evening

It had taken a bit of finagling but Colin had managed to convince Minerva that having a bonfire would be an educational experience for the children. Of course it meant that now he'd have to actually try to teach them something, but with any luck the actual learning could be over and done with quickly.

That was the plan anyway.

The room smelled of smoke. It smelled of smoke, and she had to leave.

Vera didn't pause to get dressed. She walked out to the sitting room, to the fireplace, and opened the bag of Floo powder with shaking fingers.

"Roger? Wake up."

She stood next to his bed, arms wrapped tightly about herself.

"They're back, Roger. We have to go see Minerva. We have to ... we have to do something."

You wouldn't believe
On All Hallow Eve
What lots of fun we can make,

Tuesday, October 31st ~ Late Evening

As Minerva closed the door of her quarters a smile lingered on her lips. The annual Halloween feast had gone well and only three students had had to visit Poppy before heading to bed. She missed Albus the most on this day. His love of sweets had been legendary and while most of the teaching staff indulged a little, she'd always wondered if he hadn't indulged a lot.

I should see about having his portrait moved to the Great Hall for - Who am I kidding, she decided with an small laugh. He was probably peeking out from one of the other portraits the whole night.

"... Get your fun in while you can, because a cold front will be settling in tomorrow. Tonight will be a busy night across the land, with pubs packed and parties in full swing.

"And why do you think it is, my dear listeners? Just because the holiday proper falls on a weekday? Oh, no, I hardly think it's that simple.

"Hallowe'en is Tuesday. All Hallows' Eve, Samhain, the night when spirits may breech the barrier between their world and ours with ease.

"Let all the good little witches and wizards have their fun tonight. Make it your own. For Hallowe'en ... does not belong to us."

Saturday, October 21st ~ Afternoon

Roger hadn't forgotten his initial concerns about the upcoming party at Potter's, far from it in fact.

Hence his current mission. A few words about his own pajama bottoms being worn enough to warrant the purchase of new ones - less the others split in the middle of the party - had secured company on this shopping trip, the off hand mention that perhaps he should pick up something covering warm for Vera to wear as well had been met with more skepticism.

Now in the middle of a department that could pass as a modest great-grandmother's closet - most assuredly not the same shop Vera had made previous purchases at - Roger held up a garment in front of him, asking for his reluctant accomplice's opinion. "It's still a bit low cut isn't it?"

Portkeys were so much more convenient than dealing with airports and all that bother. No crowds, no waiting: just stop by an office and in an instant, one's holiday has officially begun, sans jet lag.

Vera hadn't been in Spain since one miserable holiday with her family when she was a teenager going through a rather sulky phase.

This visit was already much more pleasant.Collapse )

The school year is two weeks old, and the ebb and flow of classes have nearly become routine: or at least they will be once Hogwarts sports a full complement of teachers once more.

Hogwarts welcomes the new Muggle Studies teacher! And what better way to do so than the comforting embrace of a Friday staff meeting?

Everything was set up and ready - with some extra help from Greg - for Rose's birthday party and she could hardly contain her excitement.

Now all the party needed were the guests. Making her way to the front of the restaurant, Rose was ready to greet them.

Tuesday, August 29th ~ Evening

The Great Hall has once again been temporarily revamped. The long student tables have been removed and round ones accompanied by comfortable dining chairs have taken their place. They dot the floor under the enchanted ceiling, the soft ivory tone of the linen covering the table tops invite you to sit and enjoy yourself.

It's been a year since the re-dedication ceremony and six years since the Dark Lord was finally defeated. This is an evening for reflection, celebration and if Minerva will allow it, more than a few glasses of good wine with friends, both old and new.

Sunday, August 20 • Late evening

About halfway across the grounds of Hogwarts it occurred to Vera that she should ask to be put down; she'd been cut deeply, yes, but she wasn't a fragile flower. She could stand on her own.

On the other hand, the glen where they had camped was right over the hill.

When they reached Hogwarts proper would be soon enough to assert her independence, Vera thought, and her grasp on Roger's neck tightened slightly.Collapse )

Sunday, August 20th ~ Evening

Izabel was thankful everyone had returned in one piece - more or less. The frostbite, cuts and scrapes from ice and nasty bite marks could be easily dealt with. The first thing she did was to move toward the kitchen. Harry had asked Dobby to forgo his normal day off and she wanted to see if he would get some hot soup ready for them if nothing else was wanted. She heard the pop of Apparantion and glanced over her shoulder at the motley crew that was appearing.

I am surprised Harry would allow Malfoy senior to come here, but he did his part and Draco is still unconscious.

Minerva hadn't wanted to accompany them, but had headed back toward the school saying now that all the professors were accounted for, she needed to get other things lined up for the new term. Izabel hadn't missed the hugs she'd given Vera and Adrian upon their return nor the slight chuckle that escaped her lips when she'd inquired if Draco was badly injured and found out the reason he was - silent.

Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping into the future
Sunday afternoon

The newscaster wrapped up the report on a minor river troll rampage and moved to a tiny bit of business news before the segue back into music:

"Enterprising mums are getting the hop on the back-to-school season by doing their shopping a bit ahead of the crowds soon to be swamping Diagon Alley. Shopkeepers report their early August sales receipts are up 5 percentile points from last year."

"Meanwhile, all the young folk, soon to be bright scholars once more, are eager to capture all the idyllic moments remaining before the carefree days of this summer are gone forever."

"And the perfect soundtrack to accompany all your summer fun is just around the corner — a little birdie has slipped the WWN the latest from the Weird Sisters! We'll be bringing it to you before it hits the shops, right after these messages."
