What is "Decompression?"
Before the playa dust has completely settled and our heads have stopped spinning, many of us gather in the months after Burning Man to "decompress" by taking one more communal plunge into the depths of what we found so affirming and memorable at Burning Man.

Decompression is an opportunity to dust off and share again playa art, performances, theme camps, photos, videos and stories from the playa; to re-connect with family and friends; and collaborate to create new art. It is, at its simplest, a reunion. But more significantly, it is a thoroughly participatory celebration of Burning Man art and community within our larger communities. And it is one of the more powerful ways many of us bring some of what is so inspiring about Burning Man to our cities and the rest of the year!

Make no mistake: today was a horrific day in newspaper history. The headlines included 4-1-1 about Foley's teenage boy exploits, the deaths of (five now) Amish children to a deranged shooter, Iraqis shooting each other in the street, the Afghanis (surprise!) resisting our attempts at reprogramming, etc. Then, buried in all of this, is (surprise!) American plotting to shit all over Venezuela. It's horrifying some days to live in a country with a government so fucking dispicable:

Hi Folks!
I'm playing the role of research assistant for a book project called FatGirl Speaks. The idea behind the book is to interview 200 women of size about their experiences and interactions with others. In addition to being an educational tool, there's big hope (pun intended) that it'll function as a means of empowerment. The format being played with is similar to that of the Vagina Monologues.

Phase one of this extravaganza involves wide distribution of a survey, which will hopefully collect 4-1-1 from women all over the world interested in being interviewed. If anyone on this tribe has an interest in this, please follow:
www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp

Also: if anyone has any commentary on the survey itself, I welcome it. This is my first foray into survey construction ; )

You know, it's really hard to determine who we're going to go to war with next.

North Korea is testing nukes, but they don't have any good stuff. Iran is also building up its nuclear program, but they don't really have any good stuff either, and it would be a little too easy for them to join forces with the other country who hates us, Iraq, and just get really annoying. Here's a thought: why not Syria? Yikes. Another thought: if your going to spew your war-hawk feces, at least turn your fuckin' microphone off.

this is a great article from the Nation, reposted to Common Dreams, about the leak case. I started hunting for something when my WTF factors accelerated to uncomfortable levels:

Okay: we all know Ken Lay isn't *really* dead. How frequently do people die right after they're found guilty of ripping off thousands of families and investors, but before their sentencing, while vacationing in Aspen? Not often. I understand Argentina is beautiful this time of year.

However: this is even better. Bush expresses his sympathies, and a Texas newspaper remembers to mention the overwhelming financial support Bush received from Lay during his ill-fated (for the country) presidential run. Let's linger on that for awhile, shall we?

I know Buffett as the dude who gives tons (and tons) on money to what he calls "population control" groups. I wonder what will happen now:

Exhibit A, typical baby-boomer bullshit: because *she* is entitled and strapped to her SUV, the next generation must automatically operate that way as well. Also: being strapped to your computer 24-7 is no longer considered a virtue.

So this guy claims that hookworms cured his asthma:

http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2006/4/30/91945/8971

I get into a debate with the guy in the comments portion of the show because I doubt his reliability as a narrator. He claims his insurance company cancelled his policy because he has asthma (note: legally, this can't be done. In one portion of the debate, I cite a legal source in support). He also claims to have used prednisone for asthma. While this is a cortisteroid, it is not generally prescribed for asthma anymore - there are too many innovations, upgrades, and more expensive meds available to rely on an old hat. Finally, he says that Cameroon was the only location he found where hookworms regularly hang out. Yet, in virtually every article he cites, the country mentioned (repeatedly) is Ethiopia. He's either a.) lying, or b.) having difficulty crafting the personal part of the show. Interesting, all the same.

Apparently, one of the accused in the Duke University Lacrosse team rape case has decided to try and subpeona the mental health records of the accuser. Like a lot of people with a thick mental health file, I live in dread of my mental health ever being called into question in a court of law. In fact, it's happened before - and if I hadn't refused to take the MMPI they wanted me to take for the sake of "boxing" me (as opposed to allowing me to be legitimately distressed that I was hit by a car on the sidewalk) they probably would have disqualified me as a witness. My sympathies for this woman have grown as a result, and I hope some proper advocates have her back to warn her against taking the MMPI for these assholes:
