For those that don’t know, FanExpo is an annual comic book, anime, horror, gaming, and sci-fi convention, held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada every year. I’ve lost track of how many years I’ve gone. In the past I’ve met different celebrities and comic artists. There were celebrities I liked this year, like Michael Rosenbaum of Smallville/voice of the Flash on Justice League, but the lineups were too long for them. I didn’t want to wait.

So I left home here in Belleville, Ontario at around 8:00 AM (0800) and drove to Whitby with my roommates Sarah and Dave. I parked the car, for free, at the Go Train station there and then took the train into Toronto. Much better than being stuck in traffic for 3 hours trying to get to the convention centre and then having to pay $100 or so for a day’s worth of parking.

Once at Union Station in Toronto we grabbed some breakfast and then took the skywalk direct from the station to the convention centre. Every year I’ve gone, except for last, I have ordered the tickets in advance online. And I did so again this year. Because of this, upon arrival at the ticket sales floor, I went to the “Advance Tickets” booth and exchanged the internet print out for out actual tickets. This took all of 2 minutes. Waiting in line to buy tickets usually takes 3 or 4 hours. At 4 PM, when the convention had already been open for 6 hours and was only going to be open for another 3 hours, there were still people waiting in line to buy tickets to get in.

With the tickets, we went downstairs towards the main convention room. Before even getting in there was a table selling the convention exclusive products. This year it was a variant cover version of Uncanny X-Men #500 by Alex Ross, which was ridiculously overpriced, an exclusive “Future Hiro” Heroes action figure, which I didn’t care about, and a sketch variant cover of Amazing Spider-Man #568. I bought a copy for $10, and had it signed right then and there by the guy who sold it to me, who ended up being Dan Slott. I wanted to talk to him a little, but he was talking with the girl managing the money about a TV show and I’m not so rude as to interrupt.

We went into the main hall and walked all through it looking at everything that was for sale and buying whatever struck our interest. I had a list I was working off of, and I didn’t deviate from it too much. We took a break from lunch after 3 hours or so, and then went back to look for anything we had missed the first two times through. By the end of the day, we were all tired and sore from walking so much and carrying everything we had bought around with us.

Other than Dan Slott, I also met Georges Jeanty, who draws Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I bought his sketchbook and he said he was doing free sketches too, but he had a pile and it would be a while. I told him I appreciated it, but I didn’t want to add to his pile, and I didn’t know if I’d be able to come back. I asked him to autograph the sketchbook, and I’m happy with that. After Georges, I met Kathryn and Stuart Immonen. I bought a book of cartoons he did, called “50 Reasons to Stop Sketching at Conventions”, and he signed it. He was busy talking to someone about their portfolio, so I didn’t get to say anything to him about his work on Ultimate Spider-Man or Nextwave or anything else. Kathryn looked really bored because everyone wanted to talk to him about his art. I asked her about her writing on Patsy Walker: Hellcat. She says it’s done now, and she hopes they put the story from Marvel Comics Presents… in the trade when that comes out.

I wanted to meet Tim Sale, Adam Hughes, and Peter David, but none of them were at their tables any of the three times I walked by that area. There were convention volunteers selling their sketchbooks, but I didn’t bother because they weren’t there to sign them. Although I kinda regret not buying Adam Hughes “Thongs You Know by Heart” in retrospect.

There was no air conditioning in the train on the ride back, so that sucked a lot. And I had to drive back home from Whitby, with sore legs, so that sucked too. When we got home we ordered in a pizza and unpacked everything we bought. And then we all pretty much passed out.

My purchases amounted to almost 40 pounds worth of books, falling a little short of $500 (in Canadian “funny money”).

I bought:

- Amazing Spider-Man #568 Convention Exclusive with Variant Cover, signed by Dan Slott
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 sketchbook, signed by Georges Jeanty
- 50 Reasons to Stop Sketching at Conventions, signed by Stuart Immonen
- Penny Arcade vol. 5: The Case of the Mummy’s Gold collection
- PVP vol. 1: PVP at Large collection
- PVP vol. 5: PVP Treks On collection
- World War Hulk: The Incredible Hercules trade paperback
- Daredevil: Battlin’ Jack Murdock trade paperback
- Manhunter: Unleashed trade paperback
- Penance: Relentless trade paperback
- House of M: Avengers trade paperback
- House of M oversized hardcover
- X-Men: Messiah CompleX oversized hardcover
- Wolverine & The Black Cat: Claws oversized hardcover (and the artbook in the back quarter is just gorgeous)
- The Immortal Iron Fist vol. 2: The 7 Capital Cities of Heaven hardcover
- Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. vol. 2: I Kick Your Face hardcover
- X-Factor – Madrox: Multiple Choice hardcover
- X-Factor: Life & Death Matters hardcover
- X-Factor: Many Lives of Madrox hardcover
- X-Factor: Heart of Ice hardcover
- Avengers: The Initiative vol. 1 hardcover
- Captain America: The Death of Captain America vol. 2 hardcover
- Captain Marvel: Secret Invasion hardcover
- Thunderbolts: Caged Angels hardcover
- Runaways: Dead End Kids hardcover
- Mighty Avengers: The Ultron Initiative hardcover

I also got a Spider-Man t-shirt, and 6 free books. A lot of booths had these same books, and a lot of copies of them. I asked about it, and it turns out Diamond is trying to clear them out because nobody wants them, so they’re selling them to the stores real cheap. The one store was giving one away for every 20 dollars spent, and since I spent 120 dollars there, I got all 6. The six books are Spider-Man’s Tangled Web vol. 2, Peter Parker: Spider-Man – One Small Break, Essential Godzilla, Storm hardcover, The Hulk: Marvel Encyclopedia hardcover, and Spider-Man: Marvel Encyclopedia hardcover. I have no idea what I’m going to do with them, as I don’t want any of them except for the Spidey Encyclopedia, and they’re worthless to try and re-sell.

All in all it was a lot of fun. No pictures this year. I didn’t take a camera because nobody cares about pictures of me with fat comic book writers or skinny comic book artists (it’s weird how often this is the case), and I feel like a pervert asking if I can take pics of the girls in costumes.

+Not acknowledging ASM as a comic anymore.
- But it was written and autographed by Dan Slott! With art by JRJr.
+Lorne has a man crush on Joss Whdeon
- Too bad. He's mine!
+What's that?
- 50 Reasons to Stop Sketching at Conventions is a book of cartoon strips by Stuart Immonen. One goes "I'm taking a 30 minute break." "WAIT! Can't you just do one more?" "I'll be back." "I won't be here. Please!" "Why don't I just take it with me and do it on the back of the toilet?" "Okay. Should I wait here or come with you?" "... (thinking - back away slowly, or run like hell?)"
+I love PA!
- 'Cause it's awesome.
+Never read PVP... would I like it?
- They have some good stuff. These are collections of the Image stuff, not all of which is available on the website (I think). There's some really good stuff where they crossover with Liberty Meadows and Savage Dragon. The Liberty Meadows stuff is especially awesome. Frank Cho draws his characters, Scott Kurtz draws his, and they make a lot of boob jokes.
+STILL haven't read WWH.
- The Hercules stuff is the best part.
+How is that?
- Just awesome. You don't even see DD, but this take on the origin really gets in Jack's head and goes in depth on everything leading up to Battlin' Jack's death.
+Really?
- Yes, really. I love Manhunter.
+I have no idea what that is.
- Penance is Speedball, post Civil War, as a member of the Thunderbolts. In this mini-series he hunts down Nitro.
+Was that the main story?
- No, this was a mini that was done just last year. It's about Luke Cage's crew and what they go through prior to House of M #3. There's also a House of M: Civil War mini starting soon. I love all the House of M stuff.
+I love the art.
- I love all House of M everything.
+Still haven't read that.
- Messiah CompleX was okay. Worst part was the ever-changing art. It was a crossover between some 5 different series.
+Never read it.
- Claws was a mediocre story wrapped in Joe Linsner's fucking gorgeous art. Put him in a room with Frank Cho and have them do a draw-off and it would be just as good as lesbian porn.
+Fuck yeah, Iron Fist. I love Ed Brubaker.
- I just love the names of the other warriors. Green Mist of Death and Bride of Spiders and Fat Cobra. Just awesome.
+Really?
- Yes, really. I would have bought Nextwave vol. 1 too, but I couldn't find it in hardcover. I love Machine Man.
+Nice.
- Yeah. I needed everything X-Factor. The first one is the Madrox mini that preceded it, which was also great.
+Couldn't get into it.
- It was okay. I liked Justice and Rage and Slapstick dealing with the deaths and reputations of the other New Warriors.
+Again, with me loving Ed Brubaker
- I have never loved Captain America as much as I do now.
+sshh... secret invasion!
- You're missing the point, and the point is Captain fucking Marvel. I love Mar-Vell, Genis Vell, Phyla Vell, Marvel Boy, and anything related. And this series was great.
+you and your Thunderbolts...
- Second best series ever!
+So far behind on Runaways, but I love it so!
- This is Whedon's story. It was okay.
+Yay MA when it comes out!
- Ultron's a naked Wasp drawn by Frank Cho! The nerd in me meets the pervert in me!

Joe Kelly will be writing Amazing Spider-Man for a few issues. I will be reading it even though I no longer acknowledge ASM as a comic.

I'm not going to be second best to Joss Wehdon again, dammit!

Sooooo would I like PVP or not?

I'm going to read WWH, I swear!

Kelly's totally underrated. I shall look forward to that. The latest issue was interesting Peter was surprised for a second that Norman no longer remembers his secret identity, but then he remembers what "they" did. So it looks like they're gonna make it so that the deal with the devil isn't entirely responsible for the fucked up continuity, like no one remembering his identity. It'll probably be Dr. Strange now or some shit.

lol. After Serenity, it's hard not to love him.

I think you would like the trades or Image comics. I tried reading the webcomic last night and it's not as enjoyable.

It's really okay if you don't. Just read the issues of Incredible Hulk/Hercules that tie in. That's the good stuff.

Joe Kelly is underrated! Thank you!

I love Serenity. I don't know if we ever discussed how wonderful Firefly is.

OK - maybe I'll check it out via tradepaperbacks.

I know we have all the WWH stuff. I just haven't read it.

You should come online.

Who wrote Battlin' Jack?

So you are the person who reads Manhunter??

Speedball should not be angsty. He's like the Impulse of the Marvel Universe.

I loved issue #7. The exchange between Hawkeye and the Scarlet Witch was fucking amazing.

I hate changing art. It ruined the last arc of Rising Stars.

Hot Linsner-on-Cho action! I like it. I think they should make out and draw me pictures.

Didn't Warren Ellis write Nextwave?

Captain America brings tears to my eyes it makes me so happy. :)

Captain fucking Marvel blah blah blah... who is writing it?

And best series ever is...?

New issue of Runaways was out today. Terry Moore is writing it.

I didn't realize the nerd and the pervert in you hadn't met before.

Warren Ellis did write Nextwave. But it's still funny. You have to think of it as out of continuity though.

I agree. Brubaker is the shit.

This series was written by Brian Reed, who has been behind every issue of the current volume of Ms. Marvel. He's also doing a lot of Secret Invasion tie-in stuff.

Best series ever, for me, is Captain Marvel vol 3 and 4 by Peter David. I wish they would collect that in trades or hardcovers so I could read it over and over again.

I haven't read the new ish yet, but I feel it has potential. Humberto Ramos is doing the art, and I usually don't mind his stuff, but it doesn't always work well.

They have. All too often.

I want to punch Warren Ellis in the face.

Ooooo right, we've been getting that. I knew that.

Best series ever? Really? Ever?

You said ish. You are such a fanboy geek.

And wtf is your icon?
[User Picture]From: [info]an_atomic_sky
2008-08-28 06:09 am (UTC)

And I would be just fine with that. I like some of his writing. I don't like him as a person.

It's maybe not the best, but it's my favourite. It's fun, and a good story, and it goes all over the place and ties in with so much, but without being cheesy "and now Captain Marvel teams up with Wolverine!" It was just great. And then later when Marv went crazy it was great in a different way.

I am a fanboy geek.

My icon is a bunch of British flags flying through the air at Merlin's summoning, so that they can envelop the body of Brian Braddock and resurrect him, once again, as Captain Britain.

That is not the icon you used. It was something with a couple of weird looking people. I know the one with the British flags--I stole it from you.

Your favorite series now or ALL TIME EVER?

I loved the ending of Captain Marvel... when they were "cancelled". It was so weird but cool.

I have no idea what icon you're talking about. There's no icon I have with more than one person in it.

My favorite at the moment and for a while now. It could change. Eventually.

I love that final issue. So weird, and you could tell David was pissed off about being cancelled and that he had lots of plans still in his head.

Zeb Wells wrote Battlin' Jack.

Yup. It's me. Have you ever read it?

I agree. You can't even tell it's Speedball anymore. But it's a Thunderbolts tie-in, so...

That is probably the best issue of the whole thing. I love Clint and Wanda.

Rising Stars was already ruined by the last arc. But with Messiah CompleX it literally changes issue-to-issue. And not even a little. You go from David Finch to Humberto Ramos.

I know the name, but not what he's written.

I haven't. I heard it was lame.

You have a Thunderbolts mancrush. It's weird. Like really weird.

I also dug issue #1.

Rising Stars was awesome for a long time!

[User Picture]From: [info]an_atomic_sky
2008-08-28 06:05 am (UTC)

(Link)

Yeah, I'm not sure what else he's written either.

Manhunter is not lame. I like it.

I do. It's the first comic series I really got into, and the only one I have such a large run of.

All of House of M was awesome. Every issue.

Rising Stars was awesome for the first part when they were introducing all of the characters and going through the history and what they're doing now. Once they got into "five years later" or any of that crap I lost interest. That's like saying "Hitler invaded Poland in 1930-something. Then in 1944 the Allies landed in Normandy. Then after the year 2000 people were making Hitler jokes." You're skipping the actual story!

I still haven't read most of the books I bought, but I'm done all the X-Factors. It's all just amazing. I love the issue where he accidentally sleeps with both M and Siryn and doesn't remember it. And the issue where Doc Samson does psych evaluations of everyone.

I love M. I loved old X-Force and Generation X. Warren Ellis ruined them both.
