Original Yuri Manga Query
Hi comm,

I hope no one minds me posting my query here, if so, please delete.

I am working on my first yuri manga.  I've been writing yaoi for about a year now.  But what I'm noticing, unfortunately, is that while the market for original yaoi manga was slim at best, the market for original yuri manga seems all but non-existent.  I am developing a full-on series and have plotted out the first arc; my partner is currently penciling the first chapter.

ALC seems like the only game in town, and even they only seem interested in 20 page one shots for submission to their annual anthology.

My question is will that ever change?  I do not wish to go back to self-publishing (did it for years!) but neither do I wish to condense a serial manga for which an entire story arc has already been planned into one 20 page story.  That would be impossible.

Any info would be most greatly appreciated.  Thank you so much!

Tokyopop accepts pitches for 1-3 volume series, and have a record of a few yuri works (12 Days, Steady Beat).
Seven Seas accepts art-sample submissions, and if they want to work with you, they say they'll consider your original story. But what they're looking for are primarily artists, not stories, so the art you (or your partner) submits would need to be top-notch to be considered.
Fireangels.net is a small German publisher that also works with English-language artists, and they accept yuri submissions. Your work would be in German (they have translators), but that's better than nothing!
Hope that helps. I'm in the middle of trying to find publishers for my works as well. ^^;

Sorry for the late response, but thank you very much for the info. I really didn't have any idea that Tokyopop ventured into yuri, so that was definitely surprising to find out, even though what I'm writing is probably a bit more... explicit than what they would probably be willing to publish. (Although with their new Manga Sutra title, who knows anymore??)

Good luck in your search as well. I swear, finding a publisher has got to be the most difficult part of this entire process!

The only reason I can't give you a resounding "sure"! is that I really don't know what will happen in the future. I don't mind looking at a serial, but I would need each chapter to stand on it's own as a story, because we have new readers with each volume and while they can get back volumes, they don't always do.

If you've already completed art for your story, I'm not sure how flexible you could be in making each chapter strong enough to stand alone. (The 20 pages is a guideline, we have gone considerably longer on a few stories.) If you'd like to discuss it with me, please feel free to email me at anilesbocon01 at hotmail dot com!

Cheers,

Erica

Sorry for the delay in replying; I'm actually trying to finish up a project for Yaoi Con as well- I like to work both sides of the rainbow! ^_^

I'm reworking the chapter to stand alone and look forward to submitting it once the artwork is completed. Thank you so much for responding!
