yo. i assume we're both here for the same reasons. some of these reasons may include: a) that you dig music, b) that you're the fair sort who likes sharing music, and c) that you are looking for music. if none of these reasons sound familiar than this probably isn't the place for you. ideally, you'd make a conscious decision not to be a jerk before you joined and understand that at least some kind of expectation of you to contribute every once in a while is there in some capacity. so be decent, yeah? join for the sake of being active.
i'm a fan of interactive stuff so sometimes i post neat things that start debate and junk. i also like other people making their own posts asking questions or even just stating their opinion on a band that pisses them off or an award that their favourite artist missed out on. i don't mind things getting violent/rowdy because internet arguments make you automatically tough. to make it rad you need to argue intelligently.
i have to be a cunt and lock this community so that jerks (also known as "non-members") can't download the music that you and me can. membership has to be approved by me but i basically approve everyone so join (and clearly adding the community to your friendslist would be a bright idea too).
rules
ok, for the most part this should be really standard stuff that i shouldn't even have to say but for the sake of being able to say "i told you so":
yousendit is banned: yousendit is a wanker. i have decided that no one's life is improved by using yousendit so it is banned from being used whatsoever. do not complain to me going "wah wah wah nothing else works on my computer" because i don't believe you. i will be much more impressed if you expand your horizons and use one of these services instead because they allow the songs/albums to be available for longer than a week or a small number of downloads. yousendit is not the messiah and it will not smite you if you use something else, i promise.
music formats: the generally accepted music formats are .mp3, .m4a and .wma. deviating from those severely disadvantages the usability of the stuff you upload. to convert formats, look here.
manners: don't be cunts. people have taken their time to upload music for you so comment with what you take. it's called "courtesy", or something. i would think that this is the most obvious thing on the planet but some kids still fuck up. if you have enough time to click a link and save it, you can type two words (along the lines of "thank you").
cutting and zipping: if you've got monster lists of tracks or albums that you've uploaded, put the majority behind a cut detailing what's under it. if possible, all albums should be zipped.
promotion: i like writing rules. i do not like shitty community promotions. i don't expect you to promote ![[info]](http://p-stat.livejournal.com/img/community.gif) your_music_fix everywhere so don't be a tool.
upload:download: request anything you like, but come on, try to keep your upload:download ratio equal(ish), so you're not always taking or giving. we'll get along even better if you're active, and by active i don't mean an album a day. just something every few weeks. some members forget this asap and instead just take/take/take. really not cool.
host your playlists: if you've got one, post your playlist so that you can get requests and trade more efficiently. playlists can be hosted at cd-tracker or record nerd for albums, or you can make a basic webpage at freewebs.com for a complete list of songs. if you use winamp or iTunes, check out these easy ways to generate a playlist.
post requests: don't waste your time! chuck up all the links you've uploaded to fill requests in a whole new post so the music can get some decent exposure. i don't care if it's a ten second clip of a fuzzy song you ripped on the radio. i'm serious.
music forms: it'd be a neat idea to use these forms when posting your music, if for nothing else than a guide. people aren't always going to be downloading stuff by artists that they know about, so including a bit of info helps people out in deciding if they think what you're posting is rad or if it's rubbish, yanno?
music directory: wanna know what sets this community apart? all entries are saved virtually daily so that a library of music is built up. before you request new music, you can check out the directory so that the same stuff isn't being uploaded all the time. awesome, am i right?
how do you do?: introduce yourself to other members! check out other people's music tastes, friend people on last.fm, and even add them to your livejournal.
