| About: | This group ... is for US. Whether you are a teenager or a young woman, (up to 30, me thinks, but I'm not uber-picky) being young and trans is a wholly different experience than being middle-aged and trans. There are different choices to make, different challenges... and people our age just don't ... related well to people TWICE our age. We need friends our age. People to talk to who remember High School like it was yesterday because... it was. People who are in college with us, or are planning to go to college. And there's a seperate factor for most of us at this age that is just not as much of a problem or a factor for people twice or three times our age:: we are going to live the vast majority of our lives as women. We are going to become passable women someday (unless you're built like Hulk Hogan or some such), and we are going to face building a life as normal young women. We wont always be going to support groups. I know that if you're like me, going to a support group can be an unhappy thing for several reasons: A) Because Support Groups conjour up the image of people standing up in AA or NA circles and disclaiming about their addictions, or seeking comfort for the loss of a spouse... and I don't know about you, but as young as I am, this isn't something I feel needs a support group. I just need friends to talk to!!! People who understand. B) Support groups are filled with women in their late 30s and 40s and 50s. We don't have many things in common with them. I have nothing but the utmost respect for women in that age category - they have a harder road than we do! But .. it's like a green pea trying to relate to a carrot just because we're both vegetables. C) I don't see my condition as any kind of a disorder, do you? This is a choice, one I made, one I have to make to be honest to myself. I don't need a therapist. Many people our ages are going into this from the perspective older women don't have:: We figured out that we want to do something about this NOW. ... we're just not sure how to get there. ... we need a few friends who are doing what we are - making this big life change. I'm a 24 y/o transitioning pre-op TS. I'm pre-electro, but 3 mo. on hormones so far. (1/5/03) I'm pretty, very passable (aside from confidence issues), and very feminine... but I can't really sit across from ... say the people I work with and tell them how I feel. I'm not stealth YET, but I'm getting there slowly. It's something I'm going to consider >> only my friends will know who I am, and what my past is. And they already think of me as a normal girl. But I need someone to talk to who is going through what I am. I need a friend or two who are going through what I am. People who really care and want to be friends, outside of occasional contacts and above and beyond our shared medical condition. SO that's why I started this group. This community is a place for tips, advice, suggestions, meeting people online, posting pics of yourself if you want feedback (not a rating community), making friends with people who are going through what you are, and most of all ... for talking. It doesn't always have to be on topic. Just talk. Often. Please. :) Transition can be somewhat fun, if we make it. | |
