what is a random act of kindness?

a random act of kindness is an act of compassion towards another person, for no reason, just because. it is usually anonymous because it is done for the joy of giving, not for brownie points. but it doesn't have to be

random acts of kindness are contagious. a small act can set off a chain reaction. smile at a stranger and they will feel better about themselves, leading them to smile at other people, who will smile at others, and so on. a small act that reassures someone that the world is kind, leads them to become instruments of kindness themselves.

what are some examples of random acts of kindness?

random acts of kindness can be as simple as:

- leaving an anonymous comment in someone's livejournal telling them they are seen and loved
- picking up someone's garbage can when it falls over
- picking up a piece of litter
- smiling at a stranger
- leaving a note of encouragement on your colleague's desk
- calling an old friend you haven't spoken to in years

or they can be more complex, such as:

- giving a donation to a charity
- sending a postcard to a stranger [postcardx is good for this]
- filling reply-paid envelopes with stickers to cheer up the mailroom workers
- placing an affirmation card in a random letterbox
- buying a homeless person a meal
- buying new stuff and donating it to the salvos
- sponsoring a child
- joining one of the many wishlist communities on livejournal and fulfilling someone's wishes
- adopting a stray animal
- volunteering at a shelter
