The Reveal
Thought it was going to be an absolute blow-out until the end there. Although this LJer was given stiff competition there towards the end, they still managed to hold on, barely, for the win with 14 correct guesses. *grin* So close! If I were better versed in Saiyuki or Weiss, I probably could have gotten more. But while I could say, "well, x and y and z probably wrote some of the Saiyuki stories," I don't know anybody's work well enough to be able to distinguish pairings or themes. ^^;

I got half of my list just by matching up the artists. 'Cause when there are five people who drew and you already know four of their art styles (and actually just hadn't noticed that there was a fifth artist or would've had another), that helped a ton... did you do the artist-matching game too? ^_^

I had something of the same problem in reverse: I don't know anything about KH2, or a number of the other highly-represented fandoms in this round, and so I was merely bookmarking rather than reading as stories in those fandoms were posted.

But it may amuse you to know that last night at 11:30 Eastern, when I had a break from Christmas-related stuff and could do it, I did a quick scan through all the participants' contributions to see whether I could recognize anyone by pure voice. And you were the only one I picked off (and knew it -- I had my suspicions about [info]daegaer, and I turned out to be right, but I wouldn't have been surprised not to be). All it took was a paragraph, because girl, nobody does ops groups like you. And I mean that in the if I smoked, I'd need a cigarette now way. I still can't believe that you weren't the most recognized writer on the list.

No, it's a compliment, because I didn't get it on hangups and issues; I got it on sheer bravura command of the language. I'm talking to you here rather than in a comment-on-the-story thread because I still haven't been able to break free for long enough to read stories -- I was serious when I said I was reading isolated paragraphs only. So to the extent that you're transparent, at least to me, it's on narrative authority and distinctive voice.

Voice is good. Voice is not a thing to flinch from having, no matter how awkward it can make anonymous ficathons. Not that I'm telling you anything you don't already know.

It's an interesting game, though, being able to pick people out by the way they write -- whether it's somebody's kinks being evident, or somebody else's tendency for particular phrasing, or -- in one case I was able to identify one of my requesters by the diction of her request itself. The better one knows people, and all... ^^

I think my yuletide story will be harder to guess. Though that will, of course, be aided by the fact that there are nine hundred other people participating, and that's a lot of camouflage.

Also, am kind of stunned that so many people could guess what I wrote - although, actually, going on the fact that I write a lot of 58 and have been known to write the odd AU here and there, perhaps it's not surprising.

Thank you for organising such a great challenge - it was a lot of fun!

hee, I cheated and figured out which one you were by going back and looking at which Antique Bakery fic you didn't comment on. I thought it was a pretty good bet ;) The only author I knew right off was daegaer.


and it's funny, because had I done that earlier in the "game", I'm positive my Saiyuki fic that turned out to be for you would have been written almost completely differently . . .

mostly in the sense that I could have "tailored" it a bit more . . . I think I probably would have had less lead up, more smut - more Hakkai, too. (it was really feaking hard to make a masturbating Gojyo last 1000 words! hence: lead up.)
