Games
Yuugi thought that the best and only reason one should play a game is for the fun of it. It was pretty logical, but now he knows that not every game is for fun. He first found that out when he listened to his mother’s stories about his grandpa. Sugoroku wasn’t always a cheerful, peaceful man. The pictures shown to Yuugi were of Sugoroku smirking and unmistakably impersonating Indiana Jones – looking good at it too! Sugoroku wasn’t a bad person when he was younger, but he was reckless (so his daughter says). He gambled, and though he was good at games, he nearly lost his life several times when challenging the wrong people. Yuugi knew just what kind of people she was talking about after meeting Ryuuji’s father.
Sugoroku never addressed the issue until that time. Yuugi had awoken in the hospital. Before his friends came, his family was there. His mother was worried sick and crying; but surprisingly, she didn’t scold. Sugoroku sat at his bedside. He wasn’t crying, but the look on the old man’s face broke Yuugi’s heart. His grandpa then apologized – and even though Yuugi didn’t think he needed to, he was afraid of stopping him.
Besides his grandfather, Yuugi know other people who don’t play games just for the fun of it. Even though he understands just how and why these people make games into such destructive, dangerous tools, he still finds it unnecessary. The way Kaiba used it at Death-T was wrong, as was how Pegasus manipulated it in Duelist kingdom. Others, like Malik and his other self, use games as tools and for their pride and face.
Yuugi still plays for fun. When he duels in the classroom or in an ordinary tournament, he tries to forget all the ways people use these games. He thinks this might be why his other self thinks he’s so innocent – playing a game because it’s fun, and not getting upset when or if he loses, is something only a child would do.
Children
Yami doesn’t look at the mirror so much. He knows what he looks like – like an opposite-twin version of his partner. Unlike Yuugi’s dark, deep eyes, his eyes are dark but somehow more startling. He is more alert, and when he walks, his back his straight and he is taller. He tells Yuugi to wear things the both of them will look good in, because in appearance and first impressions, others should know something about a person..
The truth is he just likes looking good. After all, most of Yuugi’s friends had awful first impressions (and Yami doesn’t like how Jonouchi dresses). Really, he just wanted to wear something that would make Yuugi look more confident and fit, and something that would make himself look more bold when he walked. Occasionally, Yami would say, “Straight back!” when he walks with Yuugi, and instead Yuugi would usually lean too far back. This would make Yami smile.
When he does look in the mirror, Yami never sees just himself. Sometimes, Yuugi looks at his own reflection and sees only himself. Though never has Yami seen only himself in the mirror. He sees both him and his partner. It’s not that they look similar – though they do. It’s not because Yami is constantly reminded that he shares a body, or that he himself is like a parasite.
It’s because Yuugi isn’t the only one who looks up to his other self. Yami hides this from him, from everyone, because he isn’t comfortable with how he idolizes Yuugi. When Yuugi is in the arcade with their friends, or when he’s playing a video game at home, or just eating a meal with family Yami feels out of place yet at home and at peace.
Yami is not a peaceful person; he knows this. Sometimes, he still cannot understand the point of being merciful, thus his partner has to take over and play the “good cop.” Yami’s back is always straight and his eyes always sharp because he wants certain people to fear him enough to leave his partner and their friends alone. Sometimes, in the center of a hurricane, he cannot let his guard down. When he and his friends were having lunch while at Battle City, he found that he could not relax his rigid back while his Duel Disk was still on his arm. Honda had even asked why Yami was not smiling at a joke. “He doesn’t get it!” Jonouchi reprimanded before Yami could think of something to say.
As of late, his partner is insisting he take control more often – especially when their friends are inviting them out. Yami knows his partner is trying to get him to relax, to let his guard down for a while. Sometimes it works, but not for long. It saddened Yami, what with their separation coming nigh. He wished he could be more childish.
