Hello everyone,
As promised, we have now completely reinstalled the MUSH code on the server in the hopes of avoiding any further data loss. For the next few days, we will continue with cautious optimism...
This means: while we remain hopeful our data problems are gone, we are still recommending people keep full backups of any changes they do to their characters, objects or rooms. You can find instructions on how to create these backups in bbpost 1/69. You may, however, move forward with any major changes you were planning, such as upgrades or new rooms.
While we're in this testing mode, we ask that you please let us know about ANY weirdness you find on the game. Any commands that don't work like you think they should, anything missing that you could have sworn was there yesterday. If it gives you pause, just drop us a quick @mail to *STAFF so that we can look into it.
Thank you everyone for your continued patience. You've all been really good sports about everything and we hope that this will be the end of it and everyone can resume RP as normal.
Thank you,
Paradigm

Hello everyone,
As you may or may not notice, we've suffered some major data loss over the past 24 hours. It would appear that, for whatever reason, the game hadn't been actually writing the data to the server in over a month. As of yesterday, we've been running off of data that dates from about March 1st or 2nd.
We're currently communicating with Dune to see if anything can be done to get this information back, but the outlook is grim. However, until this has been ruled out as a possibility, we ask that you take backups of anything you do on here and keep them on your own machine because we will lose interim changes if we can go back to a previous version.
Fortunately, this has been a slow month for us (the one upshot of things being quiet around here), so we don't think we've lost too much. We're working with those who did lose data to try and come up with quick-fixes for them. If you've lost anything in the rollback, please @mail *STAFF to let us know. This will include any rooms, upgrades, objects, etc., created after March 1st.
We most sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We will keep you posted as news comes in.
Thank you,
Paradigm

For those of you who don't feel XMR has quite taken over every aspect of your online life, you can now join us on Facebook too!

We hope to see you there!
The Xavier mansion is actively recruiting!
The Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters provides mutant teens with a top-notch formal education while also providing them a safe haven from prejudice and a place to safely learn about their powers. All that's required is that you play a teenager (13-17 years of age) who is a mutant, and is able to attend a boarding school in upstate New York (the school does not accept day students). Children of all backgrounds and financial means can find a home at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
The Xavier Institute for Higher Learning provides safe accommodations and support to young adults, many of whom opt to continue their learning either through distance education or by commuting to one of the many schools in the city. Students are given the freedom to live their adult lives while also having access to power-training facilities as well as a fully appointed mansion. Financial aid is available to students who require it. Institute members must be 18 or over, while there is no upper age limit.
New characters may app directly into the School or Institute by explaining in their background how they found out about Xavier's (remember that the school is not currently known about publicly - more likely they will approach you). If you need any help working this into your background, please ask staff on the Guests channel or via email (xmrstaff@debbo.org). Existing unaligned or independent characters can @mail *STAFF about a recruitment scene.
If you are at the mansion and are willing to run one or more recruitment scenes, please @mail *STAFF and we will pair you up with potential recruits as they come in.

(The forgotten LJ comm is getting a lot of use today.)
Just a reminder for those of you with IC LiveJournals, log LJs, etc., that you can add them to our links on the wiki here:
http://xmr.dune.net/wiki/index.php/Links/LiveJournals - this URL is being given to new players as the best place to find logs/IC goings on, so if you want to make sure your logs are getting seen, this is a good place to put up your link!
Also, if you would like your LJ/blog/log page listed on our main site links page (
http://xmr.dune.net/800600.php?page=links) under the Character/Player Pages section, please email xmrstaff @debbo.org or @mail Paradigm on the game with your URL and page name.

We've just gotten word from our host, Dune, about some upcoming downtime which should help to make sure that the game stops going down so often.
We are upgrading the kernel on the server to version 2.6.8. This
should help increase server stability and provide security fixes.
We'll be performing this maintenance at 3:00 PM MST on Thursday,
December 14th. The server will be rebooted at this time; the
estimated downtime is 30 minutes.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this maintenance. At
dune.net, we're still committed to providing excellent quality of
service. If there is anything we can do to help you, please let us know.
We'd be glad to help!
As usual, our Embassy on OGR will be available for people wanting to hang out during this downtime. To get to our embassy:
1. Log on to ogrmux.com port 6700.
2. Login or create a new character at the login screen.
3. @tel to #1867 (type '@tel #1867' to jump straight to our embassy).
You can also add our channel there with 'addcom xmr=XMenRetribution' to speak with the others.
If you have any questions, please let us know!

Fiver will be running a special Halloween-themed event this coming Friday, the 27th, at 6pm EST. The setup is a costume party . . . somewhere. I haven't decided yet on exactly where on the grid, might have to be the one-use room if I can't figure out an appropriate venue. The first 6 players to respond via @mail will be signed up, as per usual. Players are urged to show up in costume IC, and encouraged to use multi-descing to 'wear' their costumes. The threat level for this is Spooky. Which means it's going to be a bit of a lighter, more 'fun' scene as kind of a break from the trials and tragedy of my normal fare. I hope to see some of you there!

Fiver will be running a scene on Friday, Oct 6th. It will take place in Times Square starting at 6pm EST, and I be accepting participants via @mail. The limit will be 6 players, and the first 6 to respond will get in. If you don't show up at starting time, I wait about 15 minutes and go to an open call, to get things moving along. Participating players should probably +bbread 6/35 or check out my LJ entry on it to figure out why you're there. The Threat Level is Moderate, as most of my scenes are. Some fisticuffs likely, melodrama guaranteed. I hope to see 6 of you there. :)

P.S. This isn't the actual second scene of this subplot, just the second part of the story. The first part is the news thingy I wrote.

Was they game down this morning, around 10:30 EST? I was not able to connect, getting the error: "The connection was refused by the server, verify your address and that the game is currently operating."
So uh..hopefully that wasn't just me. o.O And if it was, er..sorry to those I was in the scene with. I have no idea what happened.

So, here I am. First Lieutenant Charles Michaels has himself a job. Professor Charles Xavier welcomed me to his School for the Gifted this week, and I must say I'm already impressed. A lot of these kids really are gifted. No one really stands out just yet, since I've only seen a few classes going on. I'll be starting the English Literature program next week, with some follow-up English Language if I see a need for it. I might just do that on a CBCB. Driving, too.
Of note, the Professor is apparently well-versed in psychology. We discussed my military service at length, and he thinks I really do suffer from PTSD. Robert was right, this guy's amazing. I wonder if he flies and has a cape? That's probably a bad thing to say. Professor Xavier's confined to a wheelchair. No flying like Superman for him.
Met one of the other main teachers, too. Brianna. Special girl, loves tattoos. She and I talked about our tats for a while. Now, all I need to do is meet the other teacher that Charles Xavier asked me to meet: Jean. All I know about her is that she loves chocolate. Maybe as an icebreaker, I'll go stock up on candybars...
Personal Goals time!
1. Make a visible impact here.
2. Improve jogging time by five minutes or two miles, whichever works best.
3. Seek more hand to hand training. The Professor, and Brianna, were very hesitant about my M9. I guess they never heard about a Marine and his rifle, huh? Good thing that's just my pistol. It's kept under lock and key, but I don't think I should even write down where the key is, should I?
Semper Fi!

Looks like we're back up. However, it would appear that all @mail was lost in the blip; thankfully, everything else seems to have remained intact. If you had any outstanding requests to staff, please resubmit them via @mail so that we have the reminder.
I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Greetings!
This is just a reminder of the staff-run event which is occurring on Friday, December 30th, starting at 9pm Eastern: The Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall.
This will be a staff-run scene where /anyone/ is permitted to join in. However, we do need to know in advance who is planning on joining us at this event in order for it to actually happen. (There's nothing worse than planning something, showing up and having no one else show up. *grins*)
So, please, if you're planning on popping in, please @mail *PLOT asap and let us know if you're going to be there. Again, if you're unsure if your character would have the means or reason to be there, talk to us and we'll figure out a reason/way for your character to attend. We'll work with you!
