A/N: I wrote this for ship_manifesto, but it's been over a week of no response since I requested membership and this pairing. Regardless, I still want to express my thoughts on a pairing that doesn't get much attention in fandom. Hugs and kisses to everyone who listened to me brain-storm and offered their own input and advice.

Disclaimer: Fullmetal Alchemist belongs to Hiromu Arakawa. This is just my interpretation of the characters she's created. I've seen Ran Fan's named spelled a number of ways (LanFan, Ran Fun), but I'm going to stick with my preferred spelling. Cool? Also, I follow the manga scanlations, so if my references don't match up 100% to the copy you have, that's why. Hopefully slight variances in translation won't be too much of a problem.

“The tea ceremony is not for the weak.”

Cheng Ho the grand tea master for the Chan clan declared in a forced even voice that could not hide the edge of contempt after his young pupil stated that the tea ceremony was a weak practice.

“I mean no offense Master Cheng,” Mei Chan demurred, her large black eyes lowering to the ground in a sign of respect, “I just meant it won’t be as useful to me as my martial arts or Rentenjutsu training.”

Teacher and pupil then sat silently in the small tearoom where golden slants of afternoon sun crossed the floor from the bamboo blinds, to where the two occupants sat on mats on either side of a low polished wood table. Mei fidgeted nervously under the harsh gaze of Master Cheng her eyes roaming to the decorative scrolls on the walls depicting serene scenes of nature then to the vase with purple lilacs, just as long she did not have to meet that disapproving stare. Master Cheng took this time to regard the young girl, she had a boundless energy that made it hard to hold her attention for long but he knew that she had an inquisitive and sharp mind. He just needed to find a way to engage it.

The tea master mentally sighed as he stroked his long white beard, he was certainly too old to be doing this.

“Let me see you go through the process one more time.”

The young princess grumbled lowly but complied with her teacher’s command, setting the shiny copper kettle over the small fire while waiting for the water to boil she arranged the dark purple clay tea ware with delicate designs of white blossoms painted on them. With critical eyes Master Cheng watched Mei, he would reprimand Mei for using too many tea leaves, reminding her not to pour the water from the kettle to the tea pot too fast or she would stifle the release of fragrance, the prompted her to wait in a space of three breaths for the leaves to settle. He then winced visibly as Mei took in a sharp breath before loudly releasing it, before she could continue his hand sliced through the air halting her movements.

“Young mistress the tea ceremony is a time of peace and self reflection which one can hardly do with you breathing like that.”

Mei’s shoulders slumped in apology as she shut her mouth tightly so that she could only breathe through her nose, this extreme answer to such a simple problem was not the one he was looking for but at lease, it silenced her.

When Mei finally offered him a cup of the finished tea, he politely received it brining the small bowl up to his face so that he could take in the heady aroma before carefully taking a sip. The tea was a little bitter but it was a vast improvement from her earlier attempts, Master Cheng took in another sip then set the cup aside as he gazed at Mei who was staring a her cup with a sour expression on her face.

“While we enjoy this, let me test your knowledge of teas, what can you tell me about green teas?”

“They are green in color?”

“Is that all?” Master Cheng could not tell if she was being serious or joking, either way he did not approve.

“It has a gross bitter taste,” Mei’s face puckered in revulsion at the thought of it, “Like drinking dirt.”

“Perhaps you are too young to appreciate it’s strong but subtle flavor, also remember that green tea has great healing properties. Now how about red teas and please do not note the self evident color.”

“It has to be made with water slightly below boiling point,” She paused before brightening up in the way she usually did when she had a out bit of information to share,” My cousin Yang says in foreign countries they drink it with milk, lemon and sugar.”

“Only the barbaric Amesterians who have no sense of taste or cannot understand the refined art of tea making would drink their tea in such a manner,” Master Cheng openly glowered at the idea of such contamination being done to tea.

“But I like mine with sugar,” Mei said lowly while casting a reproachful look at her rapidly cooling tea as if it lacked sweetness on purpose.

“Tell me about flower teas,” he asked after composing himself, noting that her body seemed to come alert at the mention of her favorite tea.

“For flower teas one can use jasmine buds, rose petals, or sweet dried chrysanthemums, if using lotus one must collect it at dawn in order for the flavor to retain the early morning dew that will help the fragrance linger. These teas will alleviate depression caused by bad weather and heals sore throats and other cold symptoms.”

“Well done young mistress,” He was pleased that she managed to put her mind to at least one kind of tea.

“You may also add sugar to flower teas,” Mei announced happily as if that factor was the best part of tea.

Master Cheng’s mouth twitched whether it was to a smile or a frown one could hardly tell,” Yes sweetness goes well with flowers. If only you applied this interest in the rest of the tea ceremony.”

“I like tea, but I just feel that I need to focus in other areas in order to prepare.”

Master Cheng had heard or the young mistress’s goal to find the secret of immortality in order to save the Chan clan was a noble pursuit but he felt that it was too heavy of a burden for such a young girl. The servants would often whisper in concern about the intensity in which their young mistress studied the arts of fighting and Rentanjutsu, some wondered if she even slept anymore.

“Young mistress the tea ceremony is not strictly about preparing tea; any half witted servant could do that. For one to brew proper tea one must enter a higher state of mind in which all of the senses are used.”

He gestured a hand withered and crooked with age and years of dedicating himself to mastering the swift hand movement necessary to perform the ceremony perfectly to the teapot and cups,” The eyes are delighted by the shape and color of the tea accessories, regaled by the steam clouds, and the soft colors of the tea itself.”

He leaned forward to pick up his tea cup enjoying the smooth and slightly warm feel to it,” We enjoy the pleasing texture of the object, also the fragile and supple leaves. The sounds of the seething kettle and crackling fire bring about the music of nature.”

Master Cheng tipped the tea cup to his mouth to take in another sip of the brew,” And the smell and the taste, similar t you earlier remark on green teas being green, is self evident.” Setting down the cup his tired and old eyes gazed at Mei’s clear and bright ones, he saw so much potential and strength in them, which confirmed his belief of her chances in achieving her goal. He just hoped that price would not be too high.

“A perfect tea ceremony is done when one harmonizes al of these elements and senses, I believe this philosophy is similar to your martial arts and Rentanjutsu training. Remember young mistress in everything you do, you must do it with the art of harmony within yourself and the world around you. Do you understand?”

Mei nodded her head in confirmation with Master Cheng noting that sparks of interest were dancing in her curious black eyes.

“Very good. Now let us enjoy our tea.”

Mei picked up her cup and gracefully raised it to her lips, only to pull back with displeasure evident on her features, and her eyes squinting in dislike. Master Cheng sighed while rubbing his forehead with his long fingers,

“If it pleases you young mistress you may go get the sugar bowl.”

This is a for all the Xing characters, each of them have a fire within that fuels them to search for the secret of immortality. When I hear this song I think of them just arriving in Amestris.

A song about sticking together in both good times and bad. This song works for the loyalty between Ling and Lan Fan but also the friendship between Mei and Xiao-Mei

The life of a princess
From her birth is well-defined
She must humbly serve her country
Play the parts she’s been assigned

Even Though Mei’s a princess doesn’t mean she can’t act like the other girls! A fun song that reminds me of Mei’s silly side.

4.Blood - Abandoned Pools
Staring into the sun
We eat our young
This can't be what you're waiting for

Due to family and political circumstances both Ling and Mei have to travel to another country and make sacrifices in order to protect their clan. This is a song about how family ties can turn against you.

5.Kingdom - Dave Gahan
Can you feel me coming
Open the door it's only me
I have that desperate feeling
Trouble is where I'm going to be

This song is for Greed/Ling, its dark, sexy, and proudly says he has arrived.

6.Love Before Time - Coco Lee
If the years take away
Every memory that I have
I would still know the way
That would lead me back to your side

This song doesn’t really have a specific character or couple in mind (Though you could say its Ling/Lan Fan) this song just has a epic quality to it, that I think fits the story of the Xing characters.

7.Maaya Sakamoto - Hashiru (Running)
Translation:
In this world of seemingly overflowing love
Even without words, we can understand each other
Every morning begins from there and
Even if time passes, the end won’t come

This is a happy, bouncy, and energetic song which are all things in my mind Mei.

8. #1 Crush - Garbage
I will burn for you
Feel pain for you
I will twist the knife and bleed my aching heart
And tear it apart

This is a song about extreme loyalty and all the intense the feelings that come from that. To me this song does a fair job to represent the lengths that Lan Fan is willing to go in service of Ling.

9.Make a Man Out of You - Mulan
We must be swift as
the coursing river
With all the force
of a great typhoon
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon

Though we never get to see Ling, Lan Fan and Mei train in preparation for their search of immortality, I’m sure it went something like this. That and the chorus seems to embody all the aspects of their fighting style.

10. Kill Bill Theme - Wu Tang Clan

Imagine in your mind all the kick ass fight scenes we see the Xing characters in. Now add this music. It really fits doesn’t it?

11.I Wanna Be With You - Mandy Moore
I wanna be with you
There's nothing more to say
There's nothing else I want more than to feel this way

Through out the series Mei seems to fall in and out of love , this is a sweet song about the ideals young love that suits Mei.

12. David Usher - Black Black Heart
Search for pleasure search for pain
In this world now I am undying
I unfurl my flag my nation helpless

Now it’s time for angst Ling/Greed! Though I’m fairly certain this song is about sex, to me it’s also about greediness and the consequences of it. The above lyrics really suit Ling/Greed, but the line “Eating all your king and queens, all your sex and your diamonds,” does as well. After all Greed desires money, woman, and power.

13.Reflection (Chinese version) - Coco Lee
Translation:
Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection
Someone I don't know?

This song can be for either Lan Fan or Mei (or perhaps both at the same time!), a song about the moments when they second guess themselves.

14.Placebo -Centrefolds
It's wrong I've been waiting far too long

Angsty Ling/Lan Fan song! It can be taken from either perspective, essentially it appears to be about refusing to let someone give up on themselves and the desperation that comes with waiting to be with them.

15. Maaya Sakamoto - Gravity (Wolf’s Rain ending theme)
Is somebody there beyond these heavy aching feet
Still the road keeps on telling me to go on
Something is pulling me
I feel the gravity of it all

Another song about the travels of the Xing characters. However this song not only reflects on them physically traveling, but the journeying they’ve taken in their minds and hearts. The farther the go the more effort it takes to keep going, especially when you can no longer remember the destination.

16. Invincible - OK GO
You're invincible.
That crushing, crashing, atom-smashing, white-hot thing... It's invincible

I thought we should end on a kick ass note ^____^ After all at the end of the day these characters are invincible!

Title: The Basics of Alchemy

He’d traveled with the two Elric brothers long enough to learn two things about alchemy. To begin with, it was much more difficult then he’d thought it was. The other was the basic law of equivalent exchange.

Now as he lay on the floor under the massive homunculus named Gluttony, screaming at the brothers to stay out of it, and watching the thing called “Father” approach him with a red stone, the key to immortality, he realized that they might have been right about the basic law of alchemy. He’d seen instances of it not only when Ed and Al used alchemy, but also in life.

First was food. If he wanted food he had to provide the seller with something of equal or greater value to get it, namely money. The second was the way these people worked- they did favors, but also requested to have favors done for them. A third example was when he made everyone uncomfortable by asking Winry to be his wife—he had to deal with being uncomfortable with RanFan’s silence later that night. The one thing he wished to forget was the battle with Wrath. To protect him RanFan let herself get injured, and then to escape she’d cut off her arm. He wondered why she thought he was worth that price.

That was why now, with all the attention on him he gritted his teeth and thought of the price he’d pay so her injuries weren’t in vain.

The thought that kept him fighting the multiple personalities inside the stone that tried to take over in his mind was that he’d do whatever he could to make his country a better place. She’d given up an arm, a part of her livelihood, for their country, and if it would help he’d give everything to make sure the results of her sacrifice were worthwhile.

Xingese Characters Given Names and Surnames Translated!

Given names

Ling: A unisex name that means “Compassion or Understanding.”

That kind of fits him. I know that his sin is Greed and all, but he is very compassionate towards his followers.

And just for kicks apparently the female version of this name translates to…

Ling: “Bell, Chime, Tinkling.”

Lan Fan

This was not a easy name to find a translation for…

Lan: Means “Orchid”

Okay so that part was easy but Fan not so much…There’s a Chinese name LanFen which means “Orchid Fragrance.” Now Fan and Fen seem pretty close, but I decided to see if there was an exact translation for Fan. Sadly, the closet I could find was Fang a unisex name, for girls it means “Fragrance” while boys it means “Honest.” Now to make things even harder there’s another Chinese name FenFang which means “Fragrant.”….*Clutches head in pain*….So I’m going to take a leap and say Lan Fan translates to “Orchid Fragrance” or “Fragrant Orchid.” Either way I find it interesting that her name has a very feminine meaning, it suits her considering the conflict between her being a warrior and a woman.

Also, Orchids are one of my favorite flowers.

Mei: Plum

Awwww that’s so freakin cute, which is suitable because Mei is so freakin cute. I think its from all the Magical Girl anime that I’ve watched, because I think girls named after fruit or flowers is really adorable.

That’s going to suck for my future children though…

Xiao Mei

Xiao: Little

Mei: Plum

Little + Plum = Little Plum

Fu: Wealthy

It sort of works for him, depending on how you want to go defining wealth.

Surnames

Yao:

A Chinese surname that means “Elegant.”

Fun Facts:
-The Yao people are one of the 56 ethnic groups in China. They reside in the south and southwest mountain terrain.
-There was an actually Emperor named Yao, and he was known as one of the legendary Chinese rulers. Known for being morally perfect, ruled from age 20 to 119, and is credited for creating the game Weiqi (Go) for his slow son….Who totally thinks this is proof that Ling will become emperor ;)

Variations: Chen, Chang, Chin, Ch’en

A Chinese surname that means “to arrange; to exhibit; to tell; to narrate; old; stale.”

I think I prefer the meanings that are about telling and narrating, then old and stale…Mei’s not old and stale ; _ ;

Fun Facts:
-This is a 2700 year old name, and is also the fifth most popular Chinese surname
-Jackie Chan shares the same surname….that’s kinda cool…perhaps it explains her kick ass martial arts skills.

Fan

Yes, we’re back to this dreaded name. This is for those of you who believe Fan is Lan’s surname and not part of her given name…I don’t know if that’s true or not, anyone want to confirm?

One translations of Fan is “Cage, Fence.”

The second translation of Fan is “a pattern, a model, a standard.”

Fun Facts:
-The 2nd translation of Fan is a 2780 year old name

Hey guys, I need some MAJOR Help. I got it into my head that I should cosplay as Ling. However, I have a big problem -- I can't seem to find any color art of him! The onyl color I have found is the cover of one of the manga's where he is in the distance, and his jacket is depicted as a golden-yellow color. If anyone here has COLORED PICTURES of Ling (that are NOT Fan art) I would greatly appreciate it!

Hallo, first time poster, been a lurker, etc.

I'm here to tell everybody about a new rp comm called gatecollision that's going to open soon and to say that we really need people. The general premise is that it's post-movie where the two worlds have collided with each other after the gate breaks down from the recent amount of gatehopping and what happens afterwards.

Now you may be asking yourself, what does this have to do with Xing at all if it's post-movie? Well, here's the thing, it can have everything to do with it. I'm currently the mun playing and alter!Ling character and we have an alter!Ran Fan, but the others are still up for grabs if people want them (that and a whole ton of canon characters like Roy, Havoc, Armstrong, and Officer Hughes). Just because Xing doesn't appear in the anime doesn't mean it doesn't exist in the anime, it just wasn't mentioned which in turn means that this is a whole new area that hasn't been explored yet. Think of the possibilities :D Also, as of now there are no pairings, but that just means there aren't any premade, set in stone yet.

At the very least, I hope you'll consider helping us out and if you have any questions, feel free to either ask me or check out the comm and email the mod :3

Summary: Some insight into Mr. Fu's head. Spoilers Chapter 54+

I am a proud servant of the Yao Clan. I find it an honor to serve Young Master. My family has long since protected the Yao Clan, I do not intend to fail at my task. But my granddaughter, Ran Fan, I see the way she looks at Young Master, trying to hide the flush of her face behind her mask, not knowing that her hood betrays her in the wind, showing off a rosy left ear.

When they fought against those weird fellows with the abudance of chi, I should have been present, to avoid what was to come next. I do not fully blame myself, my granddaughter, or Young Master for what happened. Nor do I blame the blond boy and his friends. The ones at fault were the ones who had the sheer greatness of souls in them.

They are to blame.

You guys don't know how happy I was to find this place. I think it's my biggest hope in what I'm trying to do right now! Uhm, anyways!

If this is against the rules--I saw nothing about pimping roleplaying communities, so--you can delete it immediately. If not, I'd like for you to read on!

My name's Snow, and I'm trying to find a Ran Fan (and a Fu, even!) for my friend's roleplay that I'm joining as Ling at. I honestly think the pairing is both underloved, as well as under seen in roleplays. At least, one's I've been hiding out in. Anyways.

If anyone is interested, then follow on to the information! (I definitely sense I'll be lurking this community even if I don't get someone!)

Interested yet? Good, let me explain to you the wor... oh, who am I? You can call me God, if you want, but that name seems ... so outdated, doesn't it? So, anyway, the world. Or should I just call it all of existence? Most of existence anyway, since some of existence is already 'dying'. No, I didn't say it doesn't exist anymore, I said 'dying'. The world (which is really just a metaphor for everything) goes in cycles. Like harvest, winter and then spring. We just happen to be at the end of harvest. Don't I care...? Well, that's my secret, you know. I gotta keep something private from all of you~.

Anyway. The world as it is right now is a disk. A perfectly circular (ha, and scientists said you couldn't make one) disk. On one side we've got the End of the World Tournament. Which is, the tournament to see who gets to live to see the beginning of the new world, pretty nifty, huh? And on the otherside we have people just trying to be happy. Or whatever people want to do before the end of the world. Both sides of the disk are split into four parts. Quads 1-4, easy to remember, yeah?

As for what people do on the Below Side? I don't really care, whatever they want. I'm not living the last year of their lives, afterall. On the Upside? Yeah, I do mind. It's my tournament, afterall. Participants are not allowed to off each other, that just wouldn't be professional. Each participant has thirty tokens, and can wager them on fights or on their own fights. When you run out of coins you have to go to the Below. No, it isn't anything like Hell, get that out of your mind this instant. You can gain coins from winning bets or fights. I bet you can guess, but the person with the most coins after a year is the victor. Why a year?

'Cuz I said so.

Okay, since this is apparently not against the rules .. I'm going to do much of the same as paisley_fox did not too long ago.

I roleplay as Ran Fan over in a multifandom roleplay known as desert_mayhem (which has recently gone through some pretty hard times, though now it's back to normal, I think). The poor girl is stuck there without anyone she knows, basically, because all of the FMA characters are ... umm .. well, they've dissappeared. ^^;

Anyway, I've been trying to recruit someone as Ling over there for a while, but I don't think it's going to happen, unfortunately. D: So, I've come here, begging not only for Ling (though I'd absolutely LOVE one), but for more FMA characters in general. ^^;

If anyone is even remotely interested, I THANK YOU. SO VERY MUCH. T_T

for the record, we did once have an Edward and an Izumi, but both characters have left, methinks.
