04:27 pm - PaCO web updates - New Photos, New Videos, New Forums!
Hey everyone, just a few random updates for "PaCO Online" >^_^<

Upon finally having a fair number of videos from PaCO, I started up a YouTube page for PaCO at http://www.youtube.com/pacoumaine

I still have to sort through 26 videos I took at the PaCO trip to King Richard's Faire- I don't know if anyone wants to see *all* of those up on PaCO's page..- and then I've got 6 videos from the Beltane Bonfire and Cookout this year (does anyone have the video of the Maypole Dance? meow?), but I've got it started. >^_^<

I opened up a couple new forums on the PaCO Bulletin Board at http://pacoumaine.proboards74.com

One is "PaCO Politics", for the discussion of technical details, officer positions, elections, University policies, all the "boring details" that can come up, and potentially upset debates. The other is "What Was That All About?", for lack of a better name yet, which is meant in good fun and is there for remembering, griping, and joking about past issues in PaCO, and past trouble-making members. These boards are both restricted to people who register as members of the PaCO Bulletin Board, to keep it toned down. --I could make it more complicated by setting a password for the boards that would have to be given to those who want in and are known members of PaCO, but why bother? No one would want to bother with that, I'm sure.

And I've been working on catching up with our photo album at http://photobucket.com/albums/y1/pacoumaine

I've got 5 new photo folders up so far, covering the PaCO trip to King Richard's Faire, the talk on paganism PaCO did for Androscoggin Hall's Spiritual Wellness event, the candles and soap making we did in December, the Yule Bonfire and Cookout, and the Snow Cauldron that Alora, Zoe, Zeus and I built in February. >^_^< (I've got Beltane photos from this year that I still need to sort through.)

http://photobucket.com/albums/y1/pacoumaine/2007-10-14-KingRichardsFaire
http://photobucket.com/albums/y1/pacoumaine/2007-10-15-AndroHallWellnessWeek
http://photobucket.com/albums/y1/pacoumaine/2007-12-08-CandleAndSoapMaking
http://photobucket.com/albums/y1/pacoumaine/2007-12-15-Yule
http://photobucket.com/albums/y1/pacoumaine/2008-02-06-SnowCauldron

I also noticed that the 0000_ads_flyers folder was getting over-loaded with other photos and things, so I cut it back down to strictly image files of ads and flyers, and moved the rest of the logos, banners, and "PaCO Projects" into a new folder called 0000_other_files_photos, and many sub-folders therein, such as "blank_poster_shots", "flyer_graphics"- where I will soon upload my supply of word doc flyer graphics, and other folders for the pagan buttons, the travel bag, the photos and template files for the PaCO UMaine Staff Shirt I fabric painted for a summer Student Orgs Fair, website image backups, etc..

As usual, our Word Docs and large image ads are hosted at http://public.box.net/pacoumaine

Some glitch at box.net is currently preventing the newest folder, "PaCO paperwork files", from showing up on that main listing (and saying that folders haven't been updated since November), but all our Funding Request files can be reached directly at http://www.box.net/shared/01pwkb2o0w until that gets cleared up. >^_^<

I'm halfway to writing out a full guide doc to event funding and permissions/set-up, I just need some time to rearrange it and give it headers or something to make it search-able. >^_^<

Eep, sorry for the long message guys.. meow >^_^< .

10:48 am - Make Your Own Marshmallows - from HomeWitch.net
Hey everyone, check out this blog entry from www.HomeWitch.net about making your own marshmallows at home. Hers were vanilla, but came out pink due to using leftover red "blood" corn syrup from Halloween. >^_^<

http://www.homewitch.net/2006/12/09/marshmallows/#more-36

Here's a copy of the text (there are pictures at her original post):

"I’m not a marshmallow fan, as anyone who’s been here knows. We go through plenty of styrofoam-like blobs at our house, though, because I’m the minority in this regard and because where there’s a bonfire, there must needs be marshmallows — even I know that! I’ve wondered for a while about making them at home, and whether or not they would be more like… well, I dunno… food, perhaps? I came across a recipe and lots of encouragement on one of my favorite food forums, eGullet, and decided to give it a whirl.

First of all, I’m using the “vanilla” variation… the original recipe called for strawberry puree, and by all accounts these little treasures sounded really cool, but Cat and Tish love vanilla, so that’s what I made. I began by sprinkling 1 oz (4 pkgs.) plain gelatin over 3/4 cup cold water, stirred in 2 tsp. vanilla extract, and set it aside to soften.

Meanwhile I combined 3 cups of sugar, 1 1/4 cup corn syrup, and another 3/4 cup water in a large, heavy-bottomed pot. (The recipe I used noted that if your pot is too small, you’re running a real risk of magma-hot boilover, which didn’t sound like much fun.) The basic method is to heat this mixture to the soft ball stage (234° to 240°F), then pour it v-e-r-y slowly into the gelatin mixture, with the whisk attachment running. I don’t have a candy thermometer, so I just heated the sugar/syrup until it boiled, foamed, stopped foaming, and made little squishy rubbery blobs when dropped into ice water.

It took several minutes to get the syrup mixture into the gelantin mixture, with the mixer set on medium-low. Once incorporated, I gradually turned the speed up to full, then whipped on high for 10 minutes. The resulting mess poofed up nicely and got fairly stiff, looking like this:

Then I poured it into my half sheet cake pan, which I had covered with foil (I also sprayed the foil with non-stick spray, since I read that some folks had had trouble getting the marshmallows to pull away without bringing along pieces of the foil!) and spread it out with an oiled silicone spatula:

Next time, I’ll use a smaller pan, or not spread it out so thinly.

The recipe calls for letting these set and cool for 10-12 hours, uncovered, at room temperature. I couldn’t wait, and cut them after about 2 hours. The pieces I cut are fine, but I think they’d have been better if they were smaller and more square… as it was, I made rectangles, cut them out with a rolling pizza cutter (sprayed with more non-stick spray) and tossed them in a mixture of corn starch and confectioner’s sugar.

Now for the funny part… these are pink because I was out of corn syrup… except for the unused bottle that had been colored dark red to use as fake blood at our Halloween Festival! Hee. :) They are pretty darned impressive… the texture is amazing, not at all chewy or fake-feeling/tasting like the store bought ones. Next I’m going to experiment with flavored marshmallows… yum!

Way easy… I’d reccomend this even for a novice candy maker, like me! "

09:45 am - Wiccan Rede written in LOLcat, plus Nine Noble Virtues
Hey guys,

Okay, don't kill me! I know a lot of LOLcats are just awful, and would be much funnier if the captions would just be made in plain clear English (and some of them are, so yay!), but, after reading icanhascheezburger.com for so long, the LOLspeak has leaked into my brain... and I found this amusing. >^_^<

This lady re-composed the Wiccan Rede in LOLcat speak, and then did something called the "Nine Noble Virtues", which I believe is from Norse tradition. I will paste them here. They're kind of long, but funny if you like LOLcats.. >^_^<

12:51 pm - Great News for Beltane '08 Festival Activities!
Hey everyone,

Wow, been a while since there was any news on LJ.. Everything has been going on in the FirstClass Folder, on the website at http://www.umaine.edu/paco, or on the board at http://pacoumaine.proboards74.com.

Well, we've got some great news for the Beltane Festival activities!

Zeus is on his way back from a lady's house in Skowhegan. She was selling basket-making supplies on ebay. Since driving the two hours to Skowhegan and back was going to be cheaper than shipping, Zeus went out there to get the $10 worth of her basket-making materials that he ordered from her off ebay. But when he told her what it was for, and about the funding problems we were having on campus, the lady donated 6 big garbage bags full of basket-making stuff to PaCO! She wasn't able to sell the stuff on ebay because it was a lot of small lots that people were only bidding a few dollars on, and the trouble to pay ebay and package the stuff and ship it wasn't worth the tiny profit. So she donated all that stuff. >^_^< - And we need to send her a letter from PaCO saying that she donated it all so she can write it off on her taxes. - Yay donation! >^_^<

So, we've got the approved money for maypole ribbons and facepaints. We will have to look at the other funding offices that Anh Do mentioned to get money for cookout food. Cookout food is important. So, we'll have to get that done as fast as possible.

And now that we know we have some money in our jar, and I found my purchase records from Yule and Samhain, so we know the bake sale can be done for about $7.00 after all, we know we have options open to us to really kick off this first-ever Beltane Festival on the mall! Woo! >^_^<

Getting cookout-food money can also cover the free drinks to give out on the mall, since they fall under food purchases. We might have to drop flower-making or go light on decorations, but we know from the Samhain Fair that a lot of it is stuff we do ourselves, like the tarot and rune reading, and bringing things we have, like CD players. We can cover the bake sale supplies out of the jar, and if we get our office budget done right away, we can use that for all the flyers, buttons, and poster-signs, as well as CAB advertising. We are definitely not shot down! Woo-hoo! We might not be able to out-do our Samhain Fair, but I think we can at least match it. Wee!! >^_^< .

06:28 pm - Super Fun Afternoon! Wee! >^_^< .

Wee! This has been a super fun afternoon! Not so much in the way of actual fun, but that we got so much done and it was so easy! And that's really exciting!

Really, this is the part that keeps blowing my mind, was just how easy it was to get this stuff done. Woo! *bounce* *bounce* Yay for PaCO!

So, on Friday a few of us got together for about an hour and a half. And today, a few more of us got together for the same. 2:30 to 4:00. So, in just three hours of effort, we've accomplished more for PaCO than PaCO has seen in any semester for years! It just makes you bounce with joy! >^_^<

Today, we got us signed up for a Bake Sale table in the middle of the Union! It was so easy! That really keeps knockin' me over, ha ha. >^_^< We went into the office at the Information Booth, asked about getting a table across from the Info Booth for a Bake Sale by donation, Ms. LeClair said, "When do you want it?" We said, Friday, December 14th. She wrote us in, and boom, we were done! Woo!! 20 seconds. Seriously. Wow. Every time we tried to suggest a bake sale to raise group funds, Michelle kept saying it was too hard, because you had to pay fees to sell stuff in the Union, and they'd make us go to the basement where the jewelry sellers get tables, and have to fill out paperwork, and blah blah blah. And wow, NONE of that was true! I just can't get over how easy this was! Hurray for PaCO getting to do stuff! >^_^<

Today, we also got our key to the Wade Center Office, finally. That only took about 30 seconds. Maybe 45 seconds by the time we had to walk down the hall to the office to pick them up at. We've completed our Club Update, we've completed our Event Funding Request for our Yule Celebration Bonfire & Cookout, and we've completed our Yearly Office Budget Request which will reimburse us for all kinds of advertising. We got all the info we need to buy advertising on CAB's Buzz, News Flush, and Table Talk! We'll get our ad space in the plastic table thingies for a whole week with that! (And in the News Flush bathroom stall boards, and in the Buzz.) Woo! And wow, that was easy too! >^_^< AND we got all the info we need to buy ad space in the Maine Campus paper if we want too. Also, surprisingly easy. The Yearly Budget will go quickly if we use these for every event, but it'll be ok. We can keep having bake sales, now that we know how easy they are, and PaCO will never have to worry about funds for little things again. Woo!!!

I mean, I could put extra effort into these advertising methods by designing the little 2.5" x 3.5"-ish ads and stuff, but probably I'll just send them the basic info, and email them one of the flyers I made so that they have the option of using my clip art, if they want, or it'll at least give them an idea to work from. I bet that'll work fine. Making the ads is what they do, right? >^_^<

Ooh, we even signed up for a new thing, which was free advertising in the Union. There was a little purple slip on our desk in the Wade Center to sign up for free marketing. They'll make us an ad to put up all around the Union and in the Wade Center, and send it to all Student Orgs on First Class. Woo! I heard we were the first group to sign up for it. >^_^<

So, the only thing left is printing, because Ms. Gifford was not in this afternoon. We'll just have to get her my new buttons files (pretty new Yule buttons, woo!) and the flyers for the Yule Celebration, and have our stuff printed and then go pick it up. Yay!! >^_^<

Woo, so, yeah, that pretty much covered everything. Hm.. Yep, everything on the list is checked off! Woo!! We got everything we needed done, and it only took three hours! Woo! Go us!

Yay, can't wait for the fun! >^_^< After this stuff, there's not much to worry about. Set up for these things is pretty darn easy. We could do the Bonfires & Cookouts blindfolded by now, and the bake sale only needs a couple of us to bake some mixes. Oh, gotta shop for supplies to make candles and soap and lip-balm. But we know what we need, and we know how to price-compare, so that won't be hard either. Woo, we're done! >^_^< *bouncing with happy excitement* Wee!! >^_^<

Previous Info:

On Friday, I met up with some of the new Officers, and we filled out our Club Update, an application for a Yearly Budget to cover our button printing and flyer printing costs and such, and an application for Event Funding for the Yule Bonfire & Cookout, and Candles, Soap, and Lip-balm Making! Wee! We got all of those done and handed in, discovering just how easy this all really is. We got the date of the next funding meeting, so that we can send someone to it. And the date of the Student Senate meeting after that, in case they want to see someone there, but I don't think that normally happens. It should be just the first meeting that anyone needs to go to.

We also went to some offices in the Union to talk to people about permissions for advertising and bake sales and whatnot, but the people were in a meeting, so we have to get together again later and do that stuff then. We thought of some new ways to advertise, and will check them all out. Even the "your ad here" phone numbers on the bathroom stall boards! Ha ha. Man, I'm so excited to get PaCO all advertised and stuff, and draw in some new members, and draw back some old. We've already had several old members come back, and more say that they will. (We keep getting told that people left because of Michelle and Toby, but that they'll come back now. Still odd, trying to think about how that all happened. Weird stuff.)

Anyway, on my way back from campus on Friday night, I stopped in at the Natural Living Center and wrote out a whole chart of prices for some of the stuff that our new President said we'd need for making soaps and lip-balms. I wrote down prices and ounces for Almond Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Cocoa Butter, and Coconut Oil. Coconut Oil was actually the cheapest thing, if you got it from the bulk refrigerator, being only $1.99 per pound there, whereas the stuff in jars on the shelf was about $14 per pound. Wow. But hopefully, I've got enough here that we won't need to buy any. I've got about half a 128 ounce bucket here, and I don't cook with it as much as I used to, so I don't mind sharing it to make some nice new stuff. Yay! >^_^< We had already gone to the AC Moore together, so we already have pure beeswax for this stuff, and some paraffin for this stuff and the candles. Yay!

Definitely looking forward to some great new fun activities! Wee! >^_^< .

01:37 pm - PaCO in the Maine Campus! - Samhain Divination Fair!

We're in the Maine Campus again! An article about our Samhain Divination Fair on the Mall, Friday, October 26th, 2007. Woo!!

Oh, and Samhain, pronounced "sow-en", sometimes "sow-ain", not really anything like "saw-hen", but, other than that, nifty article. >^_^<

Samhain celebrated at campus festival

Lisa Haberzettl

Issue date: 10/29/07
Section: Style

On Friday Oct. 26, Pagan Campus Organization hosted a Samhain celebration with a divination fair on the mall. While the Samhain holiday falls on Oct. 31, PaCO decided to host festivities on the weekend to make it easier for fellow students to attend.

The Samhain holiday - pronounced "saw-hen" - celebrates the end of the harvest season and marks a time in the year where the veil between the living and dead is thinnest. This makes communicating with the dead and divination easier.

The festival offered a number of divination methods including apple peel reading, palmistry, rune reading and tarot card reading. Attendees could also paint or carve pumpkins, drink hot apple cider served from a cauldron heated over a fire and take a button or two. While those functions were free, there was also a bake sale set up which accepted payment for cupcakes and cookies on donation.

Apple peeling seemed to be the event that intrigued people the most, as few people had seen it performed before. Jennifer King, vice president of PaCO, explained that apple peels could be used to divinate in several ways. Participants were told to peel an apple from top to bottom in the longest segment they could. The length of peel determined how long they would live. "I can not peel to save my life," attendee Derek Brewer said. If someone had a yes-or-no question they wanted answered, he or she were instructed to throw the peel over their left shoulder. If the peel landed in what looked like an "O" or "U," the answer was "no." Anything else meant a "yes."

Under a tent on the other side of the set-up area was a table for rune reading. Alora Felix sat behind the table, reading homemade runes. Before each telling, she rang a small bell to clear the air. She then placed her runes in the other person's hands. The runes were shaken three times and then dropped. Felix's reading described the present and near-future. Most people who had their runes read sat and nodded in agreeance.

Tarot Cards were read by PaCO president Michelle Shandorf, who wore a smart black witch's hat. Attendees drew three initial cards from her deck at random for past, present and future. Shandorf would ask questions to try to discover an accurate meaning for each card. If any one card was too vague, attendees were instructed to draw another card. "Sometimes they need helper cards," Shandorf explained.

Pumpkin carvers and painters huddled around a table, happily conversing with each other. Designs ranged from an elaborately painted dragon to colorful clown-like faces to a carved face painted with small blood-red streaks and pumpkin seeds hanging out of where a brain might have exploded.

Over all, the festival seemed a success. Attendees were happy to sit and listen to what their futures might hold while sipping cider and PaCO members were happy with the turn out.

09:52 am - Who knows of the best shops within 2 hrs of Orono/Bangor?
Hey guys,

I need some help here. What really great shops within two hours of the Orono/Bangor area do people know of?

I'm working on improving and expanding the section of the website about local shops that pagan-types would like to know about.

It will of course still include Silo Seven and the Natural Living Center, soon to be updated with maps, directions, store hours, pictures, etc. I'm thinking I'll also include the wonderful little used book store in Bangor that Zeus showed me, called Pro Libris, I think, that had some pagan buttons and stickers. Anyway, pagans like books, right? >^_^<

I'm also going to include things within a two hour range. The rock shops in Bucksport and Belfast are a fantastic resource for a wider variety of stones and minerals, if one wishes to go beyond the inventory of Silo Seven, or is a serious collector. There are also some nice places to get harder-to-get stones and minerals out in Millinocket as well (One great place was hidden in the upstairs of a greenhouse. I'm going to try really hard to track down what that place was.).

I'm wondering what other people are aware of that would be good for this. Are there other great places in Bangor that I have not heard of? Are there really great places within a two hour travel radius that others are familiar with and think should be included? Are there more natural foods/natural living markets that people think others would like to know about?

Oh, what is The Ampersand in Orono like these days? Does anyone think that they should be listed? I did like looking at their unusual foods, herbal supplements, and candles. If I remember right, they're expensive, but nice to look at.

I'm also including some general pagan shops in the section. There are some places I've been to that are really nice, like Back Door To The Moon in Winslow, that felt as great as Silo Seven, and some other places, like Sign Of The Sun in Waterville, that are more touristy/gift shop-y, but are still nice to see. The Sea Witch in Belfast is the most touristy place I've ever seen, so I'm not sure if it's worth including. I did like looking at their stuff though, so I suppose I should include it.

The places I've got noted to include so far are:

Silo Seven (Bangor)
The Natural Living Center (Bangor)
Unique Rock Shop (Verona Island)
Bennett's Gems & Jewelry (Belfast)
Back Door to the Moon (Winslow)
Sign of the Sun (Waterville)
Katahdin Rock & Gem (Millinocket)
Thirteen Moons (Millinocket)

01:04 pm - Happy Mabon (Sept. 21)
Ran a little late on this one, but here it is:

So, Mabon was on the 21. Or the 23, I think, technically, but anyway..

We had an in-meeting celebration of Mabon on Thursday, Sept. 20, and it was a lot of fun. >^_^< We met up at the Ornamental Gardens on campus. Zeus was a bit worried that moving our meeting location two weeks in a row (the previous week a Sorority had our room reserved for the night from before we got our reservations, so we had to meet in the Drummond Chapel instead) would kill our chances of having any new members come back, but actually, five new people showed up! Yay!

Welcome to everyone who came to visit us at Mabon! I hope you enjoyed the evening and will want to come and hang out with us again. >^_^<

It was a beautiful night out, pretty stars and everything. Comfortable temperatures, beautiful garden. Something must have been scheduled out there at some point, because there were 6 tables and a pile of chairs in the gazebo. That actually worked out nicely for us. We set up one table with some candles and the food. I brought pumpkin bread, a basket of apples, some apple cider, and some sparkling apple cider. Toby and Michelle brought some yummy ginger cookies and some apple pastry puffs, and cups. Am I forgetting anything? Hm.. So, anyway, that was all good. Yay!

Since Mabon is the Wine Harvest / The Festival of Dionysus, I thought it would be fun to bring my statue of Dionysus and my purple pentacle tablecloth. I set up an additional table with my 6 jar candles, a votive candle, Dionysus' statue, an incense burner, a chalice of the sparkling cider, the basket of apples, and the binder I have of a book of shadows, with a page of information on Mabon. The candles were great for getting a nice amount of light in the gazebo. >^_^<

We pulled out some chairs and all sat in a circle of sorts, and chatted about Mabon, and the different things we believe, and recommended books, and talked about other holidays, and past activities of PaCO, and upcoming activities for PaCO. We planned a little more out for our Samhain activities planned for Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27. A generally nice evening of chatter and hanging out. >^_^<

By the end of the evening, many of us were in a silly mood, and ended up poking fun at a lot of things, including Dionysus. It was agreed that he would be at least the one god who wouldn't mind, but would only care if we were being too serious in life. >^_^< I liked Griff's impression the best: "[in drunk-guy voice] You guys are a bunch of pricks. Here, have a drink!" Ha ha. >^_^< Yay Dionysus!

So, it was a good happy night. We mentioned other things to do, movies to pick out, etc. etc. I'm looking forward to the rest of our year. Yay PaCO!

12:25 am - Bumstock Field update !
Hey guys,
In case no one else has checked into this yet..

On Thursday, after the meeting, Zeus and I drove out to Bumstock Field to see what the latest and dumbest parking lot expansion means to our bonfire space at the good old stage. (Yes, it was long ago that we could already call it Bumstock "Field", or Bumstock Backyard..)

We discovered that they had clearly marked and dug out a specific section of ground stretching from the new Rec Center to the grills in front of the stage.
Right up to and across the front of the friggin grills...

So, basically, we might have to sit on the hood of someone's car in order to grill food!!
Seriously, what the hell?

Anyway, the stage looks to remain unharmed. Aside from the stupidity of the grill access being compromised, there will be a tiny square of grass left in front of the stage. Tiny, tiny.. The spot from our last bonfire is still visible, but it will be too close to the edge of the new lot to use again. We'll have to back it over towards the dirt road by 6 or 8 feet. Not a problem for Samhain, but, I'm not sure where on earth we'd put a Maypole for next year's Beltane. Hm...
I think we'd have to get it out over the parking lot somehow. Anyone know how to do that without needing a hole in the pavement?

But man, I can't get over the grill thing. I mean, they could have stopped the parking lot by ONE car length over, and then people could use the grills without sitting on someone's car hood, ha ha. They'd just be next to the side of the lot instead. But wow, talk about suckage.

*sigh* But it makes me really, really sad. To think that there used to be such a nice field there that people could play in and cook food on grills, and enjoy the nice days outside, and now, nothing. They just keep plowing it over for parking that no one wants to use because it's the farthest away from the buildings you can get! What a waste.
We'll have to fight to get a better place on campus after this semester. We'll want to have Beltane in a nice spot with enough field for people to play games on, and this won't do. I know they'll try to force us to take it, say that nothing else works for our purposes, but it's too late. They've killed it off themselves. We'll have to argue until they give us something better, because they're the ones that got rid of this field. Their fault, not ours. Ack, sorry, getting all ranty... Hm, past midnight.. must go to bed.. no more rant.. ok, bye. :P

11:29 pm - Thursday Sept. 20, 7:00 pm - Mabon Celebration!
Hello everyone,

On Thursday, September 20th at 7:00 pm, if the weather is good, we will be meeting in the Ornamental Gardens at the North end of campus instead of the Union, to celebrate Mabon!

You can see the map at http://www.umaine.edu/locator/displayarea.asp?loc=E
The gardens are the green patch next to the University Credit Union. The entrance is about where the red phone icon is located on the map. We'll be at the gazebo inside.

Bring any lanterns and candles you can. Bring any snacks you'd like to share, if you can. Bring anything else you'd like to, such as tarot cards, incense, music, or instruments. We will have an informal gathering to celebrate the holiday.

I think it'd be nice to have some apple cider, apples, perhaps corn muffins. Things fitting with the fall harvest theme. If anyone wants to volunteer to bring something, that'd be great. >^_^< Also, anything that anyone would like to bring following their own ideas would be greatly appreciated as well. Everyone should feel free to pitch in however they would like to. I think it'll be a great night hanging out outside, enjoying the evening. I'm sure we can find lots to talk about, and I think the idea of bringing all our tarot decks to check out was great, we might have enough daylight to do that. >^_^< .

07:30 pm - Annual Dinner on the Mall and Student Orgs Showcase
Hey PaCO people who may still be reading here,

The Annual Dinner on the Mall and Student Orgs Showcase was on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00, and it went reasonably well.

Unfortunately, it rained, which wasn't bad at first, but got worse.

We lost a lot of buttons due to the rain, the number increased as they absorbed more water over time. Bummer. I'll have a report to post as soon as I get them all sorted out and check the numbers.

Oh, and Zeus has suggested that we try to locate a color laser printer on campus that is available for use by Student Organizations, since the buttons are not as water resistant as would be preferred, and inkjet didn't do so hot. People wanting to put these on their backpacks are likely to encounter some rain on campus, so a better printing type will be needed.

Everything else has dried out well enough. The paperback books may be a little warped.

But food was good (yay all you can eat mussels!), and interest was good. I wish I could have gotten some better photos, but I had a good time out there anyway. >^_^< Yay PaCO!

04:24 pm - PaCO Meeting Time Finalized

Okay guys, our meeting times are now set for the Fall.

I had to make a decision quickly. I emailed Michael Kane at the Union on Friday, but he was unable to get back to me till Monday morning, as apparently their office has been busy. Anyway, he said, " Let me know as soon as possible because the rooms have been filling up quickly for the fall semester.". (Yikes) Thursday is the only day anyone has said anything good about, and there were only two rooms left for Thursday evenings! I quickly picked the Coe Lounge, because I know I feel comfortable there.

So, we are reserved for the Coe Lounge on Thursday nights from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. Originally I had thought that we could change this later if it turned out not to be that great (I've had little definitive input so far), but with the rooms going fast, I'm not sure if that will be possible.

Oh, the only exception will be Thursday, September 13. Only the Drummond Chapel or Skulls Room were available on that particular Thursday, so I requested Drummond.

Mr. Kane also said, "Unfortunately, we cannot make reservations for the Spring semester at this time. We are in transition/training for our new reservation system which will hopefully be operational within the next week or so. I would suggest calling or e-mailing me around July 20th or shortly after to see if I am able to schedule your group for Spring 2008."

So, wow, by next week we could be setting our meeting times for next Spring.. But, um, an entire semester is likely going too far in advance. I suppose we should just leave that for later. >^_^<

Anyway, hope this works out. See you all soon. >^_^< .

12:41 pm - PaCO Travel Bag
Hey all,

Since I had the templates already from my "UMaine Staff Shirt" project, (for those who wanted to see the shirt, here's the front, and here's the back), and I'd been meaning to pick up a spare bag for PaCO anyway, since I kept having to move our stuff from one bag to another, I finally picked up a nifty travel bag at Salvation Army and then painted a PaCO label for the front of it!

Flat front pocket for signs and papers.
Inner flat pockets for smaller flyers and such.

This bag should be able to hold all the stuff we need to carry to Student Organization Fairs and such on campus. We should be able to fit it in the locked office cabinets, or whoever has it will just be able to keep track of it easier. It can hold our donations jar, the stuff we've made to sell, the button making equipment, and even the leftover Beltane ribbons and a few books. Though whatever isn't needed at the time, such as leftover ribbons, ought to be left in the office somewhere for space saving. The flat front pockets are great for holding flyers and signs!

I've tried to make the smaller banner easier to carry as well. I untied one side of the curtain rod, and glued a stopper to it so that the one side can rest on a string loop instead of being tied to prevent sliding and scrunching. That way, we can unstring it, take the banner off, and fold up the banner and put it in the bag. We've still got the curtain rod to carry around, but it seems easier to handle now that it can be fully folded up (shorter), and not have the banner on it unrolling all the time.
Yay!

10:33 am - Fluffy pagan silliness
http://www.esatclear.ie/~cammalot/

That is the link. But I warn you .... it's pretty funny. This is a site that makes... among other things... "divine vibrational healing essences". Apparantly this is a husband and wife unit that makes these divine vibrational healing essences out of their home in ireland, after receiving over four years of training from their spiritual guides in the 5th-12th dimensions.

From the sounds of it, these oils can summon forth archangels directly to be your personal servants for a day. Need to call your lawyer? Use the Raphael essence and he'll make sure you get to the right person without waiting on hold. Another angel will make sure the lawyer will do his job well.

Seriously.. if you've some time to kill, check out the website. It gets a little further past the borders of reality with every page you visit. It's actually a good example of fluffy paganism.. REALLY fluffy paganism, which is something PaCO has never been. But it's nice to have a good handle on the kinds of flakes people will assume you are when you use the word pagan.

Zeus - god of vibrational.... stuff.

12:28 pm - Summer Orientation 2007 Report
First off, here is a picture of some new button designs we tried out for the second weekend of Summer Orientation 2007. I really like the "'Iridescent' Goddess Image" one, that's the bumper sticker I have. >^_^< I also added some texture stuff to the Triquetras so they would not look so plain. The new "Pagan and Proud" buttons look good, but I like the first ones, the triple moon pentacle ones, better anyway. There were a few other new ones, but we didn't have time to make them.

I have typed up a full report of all the buttons we made, and how many of each were taken or not taken. The data is not particularly useful. To get an accurate study, we would have had to make, say, 20 of every button available, and monitor which ones went the most. The varied quantities of what we made does not tell us much, but we can see which ones people took all of, as well as which ones we made more of that people took all of or didn't. So, it's at least somewhat interesting. >^_^<

08:08 pm - New buttons afterall
Turns out our trip this weekend got kicked back a day, as most of our group dropped out of the big campout due to fear of rain.. So we'll be headed out tomorrow morning instead. That gave us a little free time today though, so we got about 24 new buttons made and dropped them off at our Summer Orientation table tonight. There are about 48 buttons up right now. That should be good for the weekend. Yay! >^_^< .

10:01 am - So, here's how we left the table for next weekend..

Click here to see the photo )

We left out the display covered in free buttons, and two stacks of flyers, some white and some pink. There's still the one UMaine Religious Orgs flyer we had out there.

Also left out for decoration, a pair of candles, one of my incense burners, 7 herb sachets, 3 stones, a chamomile flower Zeus picked off the lawn on our way in, and the two books I'd been saving for the PaCO Library. These are some things I'm not too worried about, though of course we still hope no one will take them. But they will probably be fine.

I think I'll drop in sometime this week to see how the table is doing, and if it needs any more flyers or buttons. We found some websites where you could order enough pieces to make 250 buttons for $30. That would be about $75 if we kept buying the refill packs from the craft store. So I ordered a set, and if they get here soon enough, we can make some more buttons for next weekend.

We'll be able to get everything taken down by the time the fair is all over.

Yay!
