I'm kind of new to the straight edge life style. I did a lot of reading on it and for a while because I am under age it was kind of easy to just avoid drinking, drugs and promiscuity. Recently I have gotten into a relationship with my boyfriend now of four months in that time I have found myself trying things I was curious about marijuana. So I tried it, in all honesty it was fun and after that time I did it a few other times. Since then I haven't done it, though I regrettably find it a pleasurable experience.
I then told him I wanted to go back to my core beliefs of the straight ege mantra. He said that striaght edge people were just stupid to put it nicely and that if I wanted to he would support me but not understand why. I told him that it was because I believe you dont need mind altering substances to have fun. He told me he agreed but he loves to drink, do weed and smoke. I find my self tempted by the weed and alcohol. Deep down I know that its not horrible of me to change my views of whats ok and whats not slightly. There is a conflict though between my desire to keep my body free of those substances and the pleasure I have gotten from drinking and smokeing weed.
I live in Canada and I don't know any sXe people and I would like to meet some other people who share my beliefs. I'm surrounded by supporting people I just feel a little alone in it all. Being the only one of my friends who really is sXe. My other friend smokes and calls her self straight edge. I take it very seriously and really want to put myself back on track. Though I must add I do listen to hardcore punk music, I love it, I tend to listen to a lot more classic rock than punk music. Another biproduct of dating my boyfriend and making some new friends.

| Advice for a rookie |

hello, I just stumbled on this community and have a bunch of questions....
so not only am I not straight edge but I am NOT--by any stretch--punk. I am just now (at 27) getting into hardcore. I have some questions about straight edge because I am considering it.
A little about me: Growing up I was really into rap. Gansta rap especially. Now, I am a white girl from the suburbs but I had so much anger in me that this was the music that I could really get into. Plus, I will shamefully admit that, I felt rap music made me unique...classic elitism.
Recently I have been delving more and more into punk. Because of my aforementioned anger, hardcore is really appealing to me. So much so, that I feel like I am having a gigantic "ah-ha" moment....punk makes something click inside me that I wish I had experienced when I was younger.
So I started reading about straightedge...but am by no means well versed. I do not use any drugs, but have seemed to replace my non-drug use with a heavy affinity for drinking, bad eating habits and LOTS of sex.
The last party I went to I made a colosal fool out of myself and did not have fun. Alcholism runs deep in my family and I seem to use drinking as a way to boost my self-confidence in social settings (Lame, I know).
The point is that I really feel like I am at a place where drinking disgusts me. I feel like when I drink and smoke cigarettes I am at capitalism's mercy. Just whilly nilly spending up my money and acting like a jack ass. I feel a loss of control over my body and my life.
I guess my question is: Is it possible to claim straightedge without organically growing within the culture or being knowledgeable about the music? Plus, I have already quit smoking and improved my eating/spending habits. But the sex and drinking is going to be REALLY hard for me. I feel like they are so much a part of who I am...but I really want to change myself....improve my confidence and gain clarity over my life. But I do not know how to start that process any advice? Thanks.

Hey Ladies, I have been a part of this community for a couple years now, mostly as a non-active member, but I want to know how you all feel about sexual relationships. Having lived the hardcore straightedge life for many years, I was greatly against one night stands, flings, and other short term sexual relationships. Women that I have had sexual relationships with were always women I was in long term relationships with and had developed an emotional-spiritual connection first. As I have gotton older, a lot of my former straight edge friends have abandoned their views and dweled into "social" drinking (however you want to pathetically define that term) as well as flings and short term "relationships." I want to know what you ladies and guys think about maintaining a non-alcoholic lifestyle vs maintaining a sexually controlled lifestyle. Personally, in the past year, admittedly have had a few flings and one night stands. In each instance I never deceived the person I was with, my intentions were very clear, and there was a mutual respect. Of course, none of these relationships had advanced father than having sex a few times. What I'm wondering is how much compromise is allowed for someone who wishes to maintain a straightedge lifestyle?

THEXGEEKS - what we believe |
] |
hi. my name is tin. i've been part of this community for two years or so (if i'm not mistaken). i'm from the philippines (for those who don't know, it's a former colony of the USA in southeast asia and our tiny puppet of a president has close relations with the devil in the white house) and have been edge for quite some time now. i have a group called sXe_pilipinas, which was first established in the last quarter of 2003 to get to know the very few straightedgers (i never really liked the sound of that but anyway...) in the country.
it's nothing grand compared to this or xsisterhoodx. there aren't even 30 female edgers to my knowledge as the idea (X) has never been received well, let alone understood. while that is unfortunate, i'm happy in that we don't have too much problems with regard to posing or making a mockery of it. while we've had our fair share of people boldly claiming the edge and selling out for various reasons, i would say that our "scene" (if we even have one) is too small to be divisive. also, as you will later on glean, sXe-rs here are more lenient or maybe they just care less about people habitually taking it on and falling off, making the oath no different from our new year's resolution.
though we are only connected through our yahoo!group and friendster account, and even if sXe_pilipinas started as a social network, i felt that we had to evolve into something greater. it's going to be three years in a couple of days and i feel that nothing has been 1)fostered in terms of relationships and 2)furthered in terms of ideas and actions. i do not absolve myself of fault because much of the progress of the group relies on how the moderator steers the ship to a certain direction. i wasn't able to really look after my group as i became preoccupied with my thesis in college and research work after graduation.
one of our members wrote that the "silence is deafening". no one really posts because people in the community are restrained by their hesitation. what sort of posts do we get then? introductions, tradings, shows, musical recommendations and the like. it's not that i have anything against these. they're fine as long as you put in a little sensibility from time to time. an exchange of ideas is good (most especially about straightedge) and because of the difficulty to solicit reactions online, we decided to hold a focus group discussion (there were i think 20 or so who went) and got very interesting stories, thoughts and ideas from those who shared. it was the very first step we took to make sense of this thing, this movement that we committed ourselves to. however, we weren't able to build a consensus. while many of them say and believe that sXe is nothing but a personal choice, some friends and i couldn't help but wonder how personal is personal? what does it mean when we say that it is a lifestyle choice? to say something like that is an abstraction. yes, i know the fundamentals. i know how it is a lifestyle choice but what does sXe mean? we can't say that we are sXe just because we observe the ethos and our reasons can't take the form of an all-too-personal dimension which is something like this "I don't like the taste of alcohol or something." my point is that our conscious choice to take on the edge must also be rooted or spawned by the fact that these mind-alterring substances (coupled with sexual promiscuity) hurt not just ourselves, but those around us, as well. ergo, our motivations have to be social in nature because when they're merely personal, then we can't really be differentiated from the christian punks who are for substance-free living, therefore rendering the label "straightedge" unnecessary.
in the months that followed our focus group discussion (fgd), one of my friends, who is the most active member in the group posted a controversial question: why is it that when an individual is straightedge he/she flaunts the X, but when they fall, nobody seems to want to talk about it?" there have been some replies but prior to that topic posting, one of the former sXe heroes (who later on fell off the edge and quit his sXe band to form a new "non-denominational" one) of the local hc scene was quoted declaring his edge forever. the fact that my friend posted that without explaining himself was an open invitation for reaction but things turned from sour to bitter as the reference to the sXe hero was perceived as a personal attack.
since then, i've always wanted to start a more intellectual discussion in the group but it has become impossible to get objective reactions from the members since last year's hullabaloo. i'm under the impression that people in the group have gotten tired of making sense of the one thing that binds us together. maybe the X has evolved into a very personal and sacred stance that people refuse to discuss it anymore. they would rather talk about bands and go to shows than read and reply to posts that require them to consider the rational meaning and ramifications of this grossly misunderstood revolution that they swore chose to be part of. (i don't have anything against bands and shows. it's just that i feel that there's something more important than the musical aspect.) suddenly, everyone has their guards up. there seems to be a growing hesitation to locate one's identity in the movement. engaging in a conversation as sensitive as "the fall" is taboo even if there is no intention to offend.
i believe that things like this need discussion to foster an understanding and establish a convergence of ideas. i don't think that i'm being overly romantic. if people think that this process is unnecessary and divisive (flashback: focus group discussion), then i reckon that sXe has really been consigned to the personal level (which explains the tolerance of those who 1. fall off and get back on track and 2. play hide-and-seek over and over again). i just believe that there is something more to it.
now, my friend just handed me the editorship for thought market (our zine)'s final bow and we're in the process of sorting out our thoughts for what will be a straightedge special. there are many zines in the philippines, but i've never heard of a striaghtedge zine. while i understand that this is due to the absence of a solid target audience, i plan to take the risk (of being partially hated for inquisitiveness and dissed for criticizing from a distance since i am not very much involved in the scene).

I'm ready to hear everyone's side of the story & bullshit..
Ok so I'm really fed up with reading these updates from girls that think they are just soo fucking amazing cuz they've been EDGE for 4 years. And to them everyone else knows nothing about Straight Edge, will you hear yourselves? You claim to be edge for yourself and it's a committment, then stop calling it a label. We're here to support friends, family, every girl that wants to be clean, and all most of you can do is throw it back in their faces. So what honestly happened to the whole "sisterhood" deal, isn't this what this community about? Stop fighting each other about who was edge longer or who's better than who, we are all in this together, get over yourselves.
If a girl Broke her edge, yeah that fuckin sucks. But what's more amazing is to come back in a FULL realization that was it was wrong and why you did it and so on..when someone is talking about turning drug free, don't spit it back in their faces, be supportive. Don't be a little bitch about it and start rambling on about how you know everything about being Straight Edge cuz you've been one for 5 years. Yeah there is a certain point & line you shouldn't cross if you've sold yourself out dozens of times and come back to the lifestyle of being straight edge. But I guess what I should've said to just sum this whole thing up is..
YOU ARE NOT BETTER THAN ANY ONE ELSE, EVERYONE IS IN IT TOGETHER. DO IT FOR YOURSELF BUT IT'S NICE TO GET GOOD SUPPORT FROM OTHER AMAZING GIRLS THAT ARE TRUELY CONVICTED TO THIS.

Timur Kacharava
8.21.1985 - 11.13.2005
Timur was an active member of St. Petersburg’s hardcore punk and anarchist community, and our dear friend. On the evening of November 13, Timur became the victim of a nazi attack. After a Food Not Bombs action on Vladimirskaya square Timur and a few other kids went to a Bukvoyed bookshop on Ligovsky prospect. Around 7 p.m. he and his friend Max “Zgibov” Zgibai were sitting outside when they were attacked by a group of 8 to 10 nazis. Timur suffered multiple stab wounds in the neck. Zgibov is in the hospital in a stable condition with five stab wounds.
The ambulance arrived in about ten minutes. By then Timur was dead due to heavy blood loss. Zgibov was taken to the Mariinsky Hospital. The police are investigating the incident; they have some suspects. There’s a graffiti on the wall next to the place where Timur was murdered, and there are candles, pictures, and flowers his friends placed as a tribute.
Timur was a founding member of the St. Petersburg political hardcore punk band Sandinista! which formed in 2003. He was the musical leader, writing most of the music and playing lead guitar. The band’s debut s/t MCD is to be released on Moscow’s Old Skool Kids Records; the same label released a DVD of Old Skool Kids Fest in September 2004 which features several songs by Sandinista! In the Summer of 2005 Timur also joined the local d-beat hardcore band Distress. He returned to St. Petersburg from a Scandinavian tour with Distress just a few days before being murdered.
Timur took an active part in the anarchist activities in the city, such as Food Not Bombs group and Epitsentr infoshop. He was also active in day-to-day confrontation with nazis in the streets. He was a fourth year student of philosophy in St. Petersburg State University, and a committed vegan.
Zgibov was Timur’s bandmate in Sandinista! in 2004-2005. Before that Zgibov played bass in hardcore punk band Svinokop and also is a singer and bassist in grind band Potom Budet Pozdno, along with running his own tape label Ni Esperas.
For U.S. readers: Timur is seen on the Out Cold live in St. Petersburg DVD dancing, and his voice saying “Old school hardcore isn’t about windmills, dude” is in fact heard as the intro to the film.
Timur will be loved and remembered by everyone who knew him. He is especially missed by his parents and girlfriend Lyubava.

Most of you have probably heard of the infamous xArmed for Battlex. If you haven't, then you're missing out on a quality band. Yesterday, they were in Oakland, California, attempting to record some new stuff for their devoted fans. Unfortunately they did not get very far in their tour that they had just left Reno for.
At a fifteen-to-five ratio, these boys were jumped by people with mace, pipes, bats, etc. Four out of these five amazing people were hospitalized,
Steve was in surgery due to bleeding in his brain and a fractured skull.
Tony and Brandon have staples from severe injuries
The guy from Castle sounds like he is taking sides, saying that the people that did this were class acts and Armed for Battle must of done something bad to warrant this.
Let's also add insult to the injury. Their merch, and mand equipment was stolen as well.
These guys are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. They are funny, they are sincere, and if they're your friends, they are some of the most loyal people in the world. They were jumped over melodrama that they weren't even a part of, and mind you, whatever melodrama that did happen, happened approximately nine months ago. Wow, real fucking mature. And they say girls hold grudges the most!
So seriously, call this shameless promoting, but I'm doing this for people that I think are worth putting the effort into helping. If you have any money, whatsoever, please donate it to these boys. What happened to them was completely unjust, and what needs to be done is making it right. From what I always understood, hardcore/straightedge, whatever isn't about who's tougher than the other, it's about brotherhood, sisterhood, friendship, loyalty. If you have any of these values, you will do what you can to help out an amazing group of people, and a crucial band. If you pray, please keep them in your prayers. If you don't, please keep them in your thoughts. They need all the support they can get.
