yes, chirren, the limelight shines on.

We will proceed to give the music it's very own petri dish. We are all ready for this scene to blow up, and it will. Due time. In any event come out and support these musicians before the rest of the world seduces them and steals them from the landscape.

This weekend the limelight introduces:
Gabrial James - Gabrial is the host of the wildly popular and true staple of the GR music scene, Billy's Open Mic Night. He has been crafting his skills as singer and guitarist for some time now. Gabrial has recently been featured on the Grand Rapids Compilation. A locally produced compilation CD, produced to support the Hurricane Relief effort, as well as shine a light on the GR scene, taboot. Check out Gabrial's music at; http://www.myspace.com/gabrialjames

and back for his 2nd Appearance,

Paolo(aka POW)Navarro - POW adds a spark of jazz, folk, and funk to a wide array of mellow rocking originals. POW holds a crowd in his hands and plays them music that truly embraces the beauty between friends. And just like his hombre Gabrial, POW is also featured on the Grand Rapids Compilation. POW is a star, POW is a star, POW is a bright shining star! Check out Mr. Navarro's music at; http://www.myspace.com/pownavarro

and back for their 16th Appearance,

grrRoPoLis - We started out calling ourselves, "Bone Shatteringly Cold" We may change back to that name if God does not stop shitting white stuff all over the mitten. Okay, so we like to rock, we like to burn, we like to burn rocks. No wait, I didn't mean that. Crack kills. This weekend will feature grrRoPoLis liTe. We are all the calories, 2/3rd's the taste. Actually we will be doing the quiet quiet hush hush ACOUSTIC SET. Meaning, we will only turn it up to 10. Hear us kids at; http://www.myspace.com/grrropolis

Yo.
So several people have suggested I send emails, journal/blog or perhaps even ISDN a show in every week so they can keep up with my exploits in the Aloha State.
I've got a much better/more efficient idea for that one.

Why not start an account on one or both of these fine sites:

http://www.fantasyfilmmaker.net
or
http://www.projectrockstar.com

They're wicked fun to play and tap right into your/my stream of consciousness.
We can even converse directly via FFM's shout box and PR's forums.

I'm an administrator on FFM, so I know most of the ins n outs of the game. It can be pretty confusing at first but the locals are helpful.

Project Rockstar is really easy to begin. You can even apply to join my fine label, Slainte!

There, now it's out on the table. I'm a hopeless gamer junkie. See ya on the web side.

BRIAN CUTEAN (QTN) will be visiting me on the air tomorrow and we'll be chattin' and playin' and I'm so excited.
Check out his website at http://www.qtnrg.org/ or check out some tunes at cdbaby http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/qtn2
I was introduced to this fancy folkster in 2000 when he came through and played a show at Arco Iris and my brother picked up his "Parakeetfishhead" CD at that show, and I've been smitten ever since.

He has writing credit on one of Willy Porter's CDs, and is a Kerrville Folk Fest favorite. Sounds a little like Neil Young, I think, but much more positive. Cat Stevensy. Mostly the songs conjure up images of campfires and fantasy lands. Brian's heart shines through the music good and true. I'm so excited. Do join us. Sometime around 10:30am

Also! See Brian live at one of these upcoming shows-

This is your last chance to vote for WYCE as "Best Radio Station" in the Grand Rapids Magazine Readers Poll - Ballots are available in Grand Rapids Magazine and they are due Sept. 15. Though we've managed to make the grade with other local magazines, we've never placed in Grand Rapids Magazine.. Let's see if we can do better this year!

Thanks for considering a vote for WYCE in this poll!

Ok, some have read my own personal journal where I vented my frustration about considering this program for WYCE...
Well, I'm bringin it to the public arena now. Check it out. http://www.democracynow.org
I'm reading Amy Goodman's book. I recommend it!

In answer to some of the comment to my previous post:

Oh, y'all don't bother.

I'd rather listen to bluegrass than NIne Inch Nails or 311.

WYCE lauds itself for its eclecticism and diversity, but I don't think its nearly diverse enough.

Death metal, black metal, and many underground metal and punk genres, are unique artforms that deserve some sort of airplay.

The commercial radio stations have had metal shows from time to time, but its never been done intelligently. They think of it as trailer park stoner music, are highly condescending, so the shows never last very long. There are many intelligent metal heads, trailer park stoner amongst them, who take their music and its underlying philosophy seriously.

If I did a radio show, I'd be as elitist as fuck. I'd tell anyone who requests nu-metal like Limp Bizcuit or Lincoln Park or hair metal like Poison or Motley Crue to go fuck themselves.

But the baby boomers and hippies who listen to and control WYCE's programming don't want to here any of that. They just want a mellow trip so they can smoke their weed in peace. That's a shame. There's good music at the other end of the sonic spectrum, as well.

A couple of years ago I was at a party and a guy was playing a CD that had a Texas roadhouse version of the Prince song "Raspberry Beret." I've forgotten the name of the band that did it and was wondering if anyone here knew.

Thanks.

So there was this song that was getting pretty regular airplay back in 1998. The singer sounded a lot like James McMurtry or that guy from Donna the Buffalo. I think. It was a while ago. Anyway, some of the lyrics were "No me gusta nada. It's always been that way."

Does anyone know that song?

-Jan
