Welcome to Witchcraft & Wizardry׃ The Dream! This is a Members Only RPG for the community April, Laura, Ribbon, Welcome to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The year is 2006, at the start of fall term. But be warned, friends. The world has suddenly become much larger than the once celebrated haven of safety that is Hogwarts. The tragic death of Harry Potter eight years ago marked the pinnacle of a war that had only just begun. His desperate search for the six horcruxes containing Voldemort’s soul was nearly successful… but for one remaining, the last horcrux. The last horcrux anyone should ever suspect׃ a human being. Entrusted with the memories of Dumbledore and Horace Slughorn, Harry knew that horcruxes were capable of being housed within a living creature. But who could have known the Dark Lord would risk entrusting a portion of his soul to a human, when the serpent Nagini remained ever at his side and a loyal, obedient prospect? Perhaps the unexpected is just what Voldemort intended. Each horcrux has a personal significance while fitting into his grand scheme to overtake Hogwarts, finishing the work of Salazar Slytherin, and furthermore, to distort the dynamic of the entire world. And in the years since The Great Battle, as it has been titled by historians, complete distortion has indeed come to pass. Both sides suffered enormous losses, and Harry Potter became a martyr for the cause. The world was quiet for a short time while both light and dark nursed their wounds and waited in suspense for the next inevitable recourse. Voldemort was still alive – he would try again… But when? And how? All too soon, the answer presented itself. In a stroke of feverish resurgence, the Death Eater effort took a new and stunning turn. Suddenly, magical and muggle towns alike were overturned everywhere – Death Eaters showed no mercy as they infiltrated every neighbourhood. Some chose subtle methods of permeation, gaining trust, but the result was always the same׃ complete annihilation. Cities and villages continue to be left in ruin, nothing more than ghost towns, as the Death Eaters use new and twisted means of destruction under their Dark Lord’s instruction. But his aim is more than brutish violence – it has become clear through the ensuing chaos that he means to defile the precarious balance between the magical and muggle worlds. If he can catalyse them to a collision, he can topple both in one blow, seizing control for himself at last. And just as he has planned, muggles everywhere are waking to the mayhem around them, frightened and helpless… to discover they are not so alone in the world, after all. This is a year of great trepidation and anticipation; the call to arms grows louder as the necessity to maintain the order and equilibrium of both magical and muggle life intensifies. The number of Aurors in the Ministry ranks has vastly increased while the wizarding population feels a duty to protect its loved ones from harm. Many of them are stationed at Hogwarts to defend the students, although you are lucky if your parents feel confident to send you this term at all. It is an epoch of exhilaration for not only the students, but for everyone in wizarding and muggle societies, as worlds collide, eyes are opened, and the question arises of whether balance shall truly be restored. Should such a balance be sustained? Or should a new age bred of harmony (or discord!) between magical and non-magical peoples come to pass? New and fascinating relationships are sure to build during this era of immense expectancy and adventurism. Meanwhile, The Order has finally ascertained the identity of the last horcrux, and both sides are in a struggle for possession in order to end the war once and for all. The name of this last horcrux is best kept secret for your own safety and that of The Order’s plans, but you may be assured of this׃ it is a name well-known by now throughout the wizarding world… a name that some trust, that some fear… a name that will remain hidden… for now. 1. As stated in our introduction, this game remains Invite Only for now in the interest of keeping it manageable. If you are a guest who has not explicitly received an invite from a moderator (not another player), you must, must, MUST e-mail the moderators before applying for membership. Our e-mail address is wwthedream@gmail.com . 1a. Introduce yourself in the e-mail, including how you found us and why you would like to join, and we will gladly consider permitting you to apply! However, we maintain the right to deny application, as well as the right to deny approval once your application has been processed. 2. There are two applications for Witchcraft & Wizardry: The Dream. 2a. The first is the member application, submitted to the Out of Character (OOC) Community 2b. The second is the character application, submitted to the journal 2c. In your member application you will specify whether you are an experienced role player or if you are a beginner. If you are experienced, you are permitted 3 characters with which to start the game. If you are a beginner, you are permitted one. 3. Included in your character application is the specification of the Body Model (also referred to as “Played By” or PB), which gives your character an image. You will use an actor/actress/model for this image, and not yourself or a 2D example of artwork. (Artwork is lovely for characters in some games, but we prefer to keep uniformity in this game and therefore require all PBs to be real people.) 3a. Make sure that the PB for your character is age appropriate (e.g. a current image of Kate Winslet is not appropriate for a student, but would be appropriate for an adult). If the PB you request in your application is inappropriate, the moderators will ask you to choose another before your application is approved. 3b. You may request to reserve a PB before you apply for a character. Such reservations will be held for one month only. After the month is up, the PB will be opened for reservation by another player, in the interest of not keeping said PB on hold unfairly without use. You may make a PB reservation request at the PB Reservation Platform in the 3c. A list of In Use PBs will be kept in addition to Reserved PBs, categorized by player, character, and date reserved. This list is located at the Current PBs post in the 4. Once the moderators have approved your character, you must create an LJ character journal for them. This is the only way for them to post In Character to the community. 4a. Character journals are considered canon to the game, and you may place their settings to open or friends-only at your discretion. 4b. It is common to include OOC threadlists for each IG Week as well as In Character (IC) journal entries written by your character in these journals. 4c. The journal entries may be viewable to anyone or to only the character’s personal friends, which you may specify with Protean Charms or Hexes as you see fit. Other characters (based on who is permitted to read the entry) may reply to the entry as if they are writing on the page. It’s a fun way of getting fellow characters involved in IC thoughts, activities, or even squabbles! We encourage it, but do not require it! 4d. The journal entries and their subsequent replies will not be rendered for tally points—only posts/replies in the main RPing community will count. 5. In addition to creating your character journal after approval, you are permitted (and encouraged!) to start developing backstories and even history timelines between your character and their relationships with other characters in the game. 5a. This is commonly done by posting an advertisement in the OOC Community announcing that your new character is open for backstory and inviting other players to reply to a backstory journal entry, created by you. 5b. Do not, however, initiate backstory between your character and other characters before your character has been approved. You will receive a strike for breaking this rule. 6. Witchcraft & Wizardry: The Dream is a text-based journal entry Role Play Game (RPG). The style of replies is unique from table-top, forum-based, or instant messenger based RPGs. 6a. If you choose to role play with a partner in IM format, you may paste the role play into a thread (a thread is a livejournal post followed by its subsequent RP replies). 6b. To receive credit for the RP, you must paste it in reply format, not as a single post in narrative style. 6c. Singular, narrative style posts are considered drabbles (short versions of fanfictions) and are to be shared only on character journals or in the OOC Community. 7. As mentioned in 4d and 6b, moderators give credit for In Character threading. 7a. RP posts and replies at 7b. Such credit is given only for posts/replies that are at least 5 full sentences in length. One-liners happen occasionally, but we advise you to avoid them in the interest of broadening your writing skills and creativity! 7c. After your first character (or your initial 3 characters if you are an experienced role player), you are permitted to apply for another character (only one at a time), but only after you have acquired 150 posts/replies. 7d. Between each new character for which you apply you must always acquire 150 posts. This is to assure stability of characters. We base our game on canon number limits (10 students per year in each House, for example) as well as an estimated blood ratio, therefore each character created takes up crucial space. Characters should not be created on whims and then allowed to fade soon after. Make your characters special and rewarding for you, and fun to play! 8. It is understandable that some characters may need to be dropped (for any number of reasons, addressed to the moderators for legitmacy) after they are developed. 8a. We will, however, discourage you from dropping a character as an excuse to create another one to take its place. If you remain sufficiently active with your remaining characters after you have dropped one, you may consider applying for a new character. Again, 150 posts are required between each character application. 9. In addition to being dropped at a player’s discretion, characters will be cut by moderators for unexcused inactivity. Inactivity is only excusable if a player goes on hiatus from the game. 9a. Sufficient inactivity entails no posts/replies for 4 OOC Weeks (equating to 2 In Game Weeks), after which you will be warned by moderators that the character is in danger of being cut. 9b. If the character remains inactive after the warning for 2 more OOC Weeks, the character will be cut by the moderators, no questions asked, and will not—under any circumstances—be allowed back in the game. 9c. Warnings and Character Cuts will be announced in public moderator posts in the 10. Non-Played Characters (NPCs) are not permitted in this RPG, in the effort to make space available for new players and new characters once others are dropped or cut. 10a. If a character is dropped or cut, it is left to the players’ discretion whether their respective backstories with other characters remain intact, as well as what the character’s reasons may be for leaving the game. 10b.The only characters who are allowed to remain in the game while not played are those who have been killed. 10c. A character death is a significant plot twist, and something you must ask for permission of the moderators. You may do so at the Plot Permission Platform in the 10d. A character death is also not an excuse to create a new character right away to take its place. Please keep this in mind. 11. One In Game (IG) Week will take place over a period of two OOC Weeks in the interest of giving players enough time to thread at their convenience. 11a. You must include the week, date, time, location, and characters involved for the opening post of each thread in every IG Week, and at the start of new IG Week a new IG Week Title will be announced (along with IG Week Plot and Daily Prophet details). 11c. The format for the aforementioned inclusion is as follows: 11d. All following text in the opening post to a thread must be put under an LJ Cut to avoid clutter. For instructions on how to make such a cut, see this link. 12. A posting order is required for threads, such that character A posts first, then B, then C, and so on until the order repeats. 12a. However, for large group threads it is understandable that a posting order may be dropped in the interest of keeping the thread moving. Players may discuss this with each other and use their discretion to reach a decision on this issue. 12b. For classroom threads posted by professors, the professors must specify whether their characters will be included in the posting order or not. (Sometimes the professor will start the first half of the class and then leave the remainder up to the students, up to the professor’s choice.) 12c. Because a posting order is mandatory, player activity will affect the pace of a thread. Thus, if you foresee the chance that you will be unable to reply for any length of time to a thread in which you are involved, please be considerate of your fellow players and let them know if possible. You may give them permission to either skip your character in the posting order or to create an exit for your character from the thread. 13. You must play your character according to the stipulations of their application. 13a. If you wish for changes to be made to their personality, abilities, or significant plot information, you must contact the moderators in the Plot Permission Platform in the 14. Please write your character in third person narrative format while threading, as that is the style most commonly used amongst LJ RPers and we would like to maintain conformity in the community. 14a. First person format is perfectly permissible for character journal entries because they will include thoughts/dialogue and not actions. For explanation of character journals, please see item 4. 15. Mary Sues/Gary Sues are characters who appear unrealistically gifted, attractive, age inappropriate, and possess other such undesirable attributes. They will certainly be denied approval. 15a. In the interest of helping you avoid such characters, take the Mary Sue Litmus Test so that you may improve your character application! 16. God-modding is the act of making your character invincible and/or allowing them to take control of another player’s character actions or words without that player’s permission. It will not be tolerated in this game. 16a. An example of god-modding is as follows׃ Mary deflected all of Kevin’s blows effortlessly, then lunged forward and pinned his hands behind his back so that he was unable to escape. She said, “Now I have you where I want you.” And she smiled when Kevin whimpered. 17. Choose your characters wisely. 17a. Because positions of professors, Aurors, quidditch players, etc. are limited and highly coveted, they will be strictly governed in the approval process. 17b. If you are approved to play a professor, you must make the effort to post classroom threads for all the grade levels each IG Week. The correct format for posting classroom threads is entailed in the FAQ at the 17c. Special talents and abilities such as (but not limited to) the capability to be an animagus, metamorphmagus, seer, legilimens, and occlumens are also restricted—your character is not guaranteed approval for such talents. This does not mean your character will never be approved; you may simply be asked to adjust your application to exclude these talents if they are unwarranted. 18. Realism according to Harry Potter canon is highly stressed in this game. 18a. Although it is not always correct, the Harry Potter Lexicon is a great source of information about canon details. There are, however, important items left out of the lexicon which we will provide or leave up to your creativity. Creativity is vital to this game! 18b. Such items include known spells, potions, magical equipment/artifacts/beasts, the monetary system, and other details that may arise in game. Please see the WW Common Magic section in 19. Because Harry Potter canon has never specified the instance of transfer students, we do not permit them in this game. 19a. Your character may be of any nationality originally, but they will have always attended Hogwarts, from First Year onward. 20. Canon characters exist in this game, but are not open to be played by you. 20a. If the need arises for a canon character to play a part in the game (e.g. Headmistress McGonagall), a moderator will assume the roll, but they will receive no post points for it. 20b. That said, canon characters that exist within or outside the realm in which your character plays (e.g. canon Order Members, Weasleys, canon Ministry Officials) will not know your character or be related to him/her, and vice versa. They will exist only through hearsay. 21. Witchcraft & Wizardry׃ The Dream is rated PG-13. 21a. Sexual relationships may exist but should not be played out explicitly in the community. The same applies to extreme violence and gore. We will put a stop to any inappropriate conduct that we discover. Use common sense about how far a thread may be taken in this vein according to the rating. 22. Common sense also applies regarding the rules of society and school. 22a. For example, inappropriate relations between an adult and a student are frowned upon In Character as well as Out of Character, but may be addressed In Game unless the level of inappropriate behavior crosses over the community rating. This is left up to the discretion of the moderators. 23b. That said, players are not permitted to use their OOC knowledge to help their character put a stop to inappropriate behavior. Such a discovery must be made In Game only, and all involved activity will be watched closely by the moderators. We will intervene if rules are breached. 23. You may play your characters at any In Game time or location! Use the In Game Timeline provided by the moderators at each Week Change as a guideline, and keep track of your thread history using the dates of the In Game Week. 23a. Threads played in an open location and not specified as private with an OOC note by the players involved are subject to “knowledge” by other characters in the game, whether by hearsay or other means. 23b. If there is a discrepancy on this issue between players, please consult one another OOC to discuss it. If, after a discussion, the issue cannot be solved, please consult a moderator and we will mediate according to the rules and our best judgment. 24. Following the spirit of the law in 23b, you are encouraged to consult the moderators with any questions or concerns you may have about the game. We are at your disposal; this game is for the members first and foremost, and we want to make this game as fun for you as possible! The keyword here is “game.” All activities involved in 24a. Thusly, all questions, concerns, comments, and suggestions should be directed to the Inbox located at the 24b. You are also free to use the moderator e-mail wwthedream@gmail.com, or one of the moderator’s personal e-mail addresses if you have a specific question regarding a moderator’s tasks, for such questions. 25. Under NO circumstances will player or moderator harassment be condoned. If you witness, are subjected, or are a party to such harassment you must contact the moderators immediately. 25a. Depending on the degree of the offense, such harassment may be punished with a warning or instantaneous removal from the game and all its subsidiary communities. Play nicely! 25b. Subsequently, rule-breaking of any kind will also be reprimanded with a warning or removal from the communities, depending on the extent or number of offenses. You may trust that once you break a rule, you will receive a warning, your first strike. You may or may not have the luxury of receiving a second strike. Third strike, you’re out! 26. Finally, and most importantly, HAVE FUN! Sincerely, Your Friendly Neighborhood WW Moderators |
