[03 Jul 2009|11:29pm] littlelamb i hope this is ok. today i met some of the last remaining navajo code talkers. they told me they were honored at pine ridge reservation where some children sang them songs, which was very "moving." today, at mt rushmore, they were honored. tomorrow, at crazy horse, they will be honored again, which i am planning on seeing. they were very kind because i didn't realize that it would cost money to sign a poster. i thought there was a talk, actually, on the subject, and that they would be attending. when they realized i didn't even have a checkbook, and that i was here (south dakota) all the way from oregon for a public interest legal internship, they signed a poster for me for free and their daughters told them i would like to shake their hands. the money is being raised for their care. 3 comments|post comment

French heavyweight. [05 Jun 2009|10:44am] d_prospero In autumn 1939, the German tank division, the steam roller have been on the ground in Poland. The Polish army was not able to counter any sudden onslaught of German light and medium tanks. Encouraged by the success of German arms, Hitler ordered the preparation of the West front, where in September 1939 was "Sitzkrieg". May 10, 1940 Wehrmacht began the invasion of France, Belgium and Holland. As in Poland, the main strike force of Wehrmacht troops were tank. The Germans deployed 3200 light and medium tanks and assault guns, consisting of 10 tanks and motorized divisions. But here, on the battlefield near the Meuse and the Somme, the  German tank crews waiting for an unpleasant surprise. Full size: http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/5497/547.jpg — В июне 1945-го меня в составе сводного полка 1-го Белорусского фронта направили в Москву для участия в Параде Победы. Каждый день мы занимались строевой подготовкой, маршал Жуков дважды приезжал нас инспектировать. Когда объявляли перерыв, мы беседовали с ним в непринужденной обстановке и он нас всячески подбадривал: «Вы же жуковцы!» Сообщил, что ему выпала высокая честь принимать парад, а командовать будет маршал Рокоссовский. Во время второго приезда Георгий Константинович сказал, что завтра самолетом из Берлина доставят Знамя Победы. Для его встречи нужно сформировать почетный караул. Я стоял напротив него — длинный, худой, с усами... Он увидел меня и указал командиру полка: «Вот этого гусара назначить начальником караула. И подобрать соответствующих ребят». Почему Жуков назвал меня гусаром? Наверное, за усы. 20 июня Знамя Победы доставили на Центральный аэродром Москвы. Вынесли его из самолета Егоров, Кантария и Самсонов. Я принял знамя от Самсонова и вручил знаменосцу, которого сопровождали ассистенты. Потом под звуки оркестра мы торжественным маршем прошли мимо представителей правительства и Министерства обороны. В это время и заснял нас фотокорреспондент... Но о снимке я узнал случайно, спустя 40 лет. 3 comments|post comment

Его именем названы улицы и проспекты(например, проспект маршала Жукова в Санкт-Петербурге), он также является самым узнаваемым советским полководцем.
