Hmm I would disagree. The deeper sorrow carves into you, the harder it is to find joy in life.

But when you do find joy, the greater it seems, perhaps?

I think so. Even a bad cup of tea tastes like heaven if it's the first one in weeks ^_^;

Exactly. It's kinda like that quote... "sometimes life seems hopeless but if you were never sad, how could you enjoy being happy?"

yeah right. the deeper sorrow cuts into you, the more chance you have of getting holes in your container.

Depends on the person. I dig it, though.

I can agree with this, the harder things are the more appreciation you have for the good things, including those that others don't usually see or take for granted. So you can indeed hold more joy. :) I needed this, thank you.

Yar. I agree with this quote. Once you've felt badness you appreciate the goodness enough to really lap it up when it comes round.

mmmm the prophet.

one of my favorite quotes is "He who has not tasted the bitter cannot understand the sweet." which falls along that line.

I'd wager the ones who didn't like it read it too literally, as if being suicidally depressed can be redeemed like a coupon for years of orgasmic bliss. It says "the more joy you can contain." I just read that as the more open-hearted you are, the wider the range of feelings/experiences/intensity available to you. It's sorta like how you can't get a big head from being praised without also being equally devastated by criticism - either you're open to letting others have influence on your opinion of yourself or you're not. The quote is saying "either you're open to intense emotion or you're not."

Well put. You also win for describing suicidal depression as "a coupon for years of orgasmic bliss."

That last line was better than the quote itself.

I think this quote would make me feel better about life if I was going through a rought spot. I literally visualized myself a big clump of clay, and sorrow dug a hole in me. Later on in life, though, that hole becomes a container of emotions, so you can hold more joy when that comes around. Like fuzzilla said, you get a wider range of emotions. I guess the downside of that is that you become too sensitive, maybe moody?

It sounds pretty in theory, but it isn't necessarily true.
