i was reading a story about the Dali Lama and apparently when he was very young a starving family came to his home, his mother gave them something to eat; then offered to help them bury the dead baby they had carried with them. they showed they planned to eat the dead baby. apparently the DL's mother was so horrified she gave them all the food she had in the house so they wouldn't eat the baby.
So apparently, while it is frowned upon, it does happen.
