Santapede

Originally posted to my ugly comm, cuz it was but kinda cute with the added hat, someone suggested I post it to [info]lolinverts which started the confusion. I had thought it a centipede or millipede but they're convinced it's not.

Someone even suggested a photoshopped cricket.

I've seen a bug like this before but I'll be damned if I can remember the name.

...help?

We have those in our house every now and then, they creep me out, and some of them are big. It is a centipede.

We used to have house centipedes in our first apartment. Then we picked up a couple of kittens and never saw any ever again. :-D

This is my second-favorite centipede macro.

My favorite, which I, alas, do not have a copy of, is the centipede asking "Can I have a big hug? Or maybe just a series of smaller hugs?"

Still, A+ post, would WTF again.

I sent this to [info]sinboy and he replied, "HO HO HO CHITTER CHITTER, it's Jolly Old St. Ick!"

I'm quite fond of house centipedes as long as they don't annoy the cats (who are wusses and totally freaked out by bugs) or hide in my bed.

I got so sick of those things that I no longer kill them. I capture them, store them in the freezer, and once I get enough, I'll makea little bonfire in my yard and burn the frozen mass in it.

there was one of these in my boyfriend's basement. i thought it was just a [rather large] cricket so i asked him to catch it and toss it outside (this is cricket SOP around here). and when he said "uh, that's not a cricket" i was across the basement so fast i might as well have been something with as many legs as this fellow.

I hate centipedes, man they're nasty. And poisonous, and carnivorous.

But... they eat other bugs mostly, which is my motivation for not killing any spiders in the house...

gfldfkasdfkjadsfjal GOD DAMN those guys freak me the FUCK out. But I try not to kill them because they help with my apartment's cockroach and spider problems. It's just so hard NOT to smash the fuckers when you wake up in the morning and there's this thing with 3208947239472348792 legs wriggling up the wall next to you. XD

Scutigera.

I've never seen one. :( Maybe they're not so common in Australia.

I have seen freakin' big short-legged centipedes in the tropics though.

The first time I came across one of those I thought 'huh. Interesting. I'll cup it and take a picture and find out what it is.' So I went to put the glass over it. Problem was, I only caught half of it. And both halves kept scurrying. The free one went under the fridge and the cupped half around the cup. Que screaming. Things aren't supposed to do that.

The second time I came across one was when my house mate called me out of my room to take a look at what she had found. She comes to my door and low and behold, she has one of these. But she's letting it run around on her chest. Que screaming. She tossed it outside and came back down to ask what the story was.

The most recent time I came across one was late at night this week. I was about to go to bed when I thought I saw an escaped cricket (they are pet food. Nope. One of these ran under my bed. No screaming, but I am NOT happy.
