Writer's Block: I Made It Myself

  • Jan. 29th, 2008 at 9:44 AM
A lot of things... painted pictures, taken photographs, created decorative items out of thrownaway stuff, crafted props for the college plays, conjured stories out of thin air, written songs, done a lot of schoolwork, made a clay cat once, composed music (admittedly, my voice had a part in it as well), answered letters... and put together an emptiness in my life which I'm now trying to dismantle. Unmaking some things with your own two hands is as important as making some others.

What have you made using your own two hands?

Writer's Block: My Fictional Counterpart

  • Nov. 21st, 2007 at 8:39 AM
Krishna in the Mahabharata. Sweet-talking, mischief-making, planning a war, taking over the world... just joking :D
I relate more to his detached nature, his scrunched-up love life, his utter indifference to ups and downs.
Also Xan Lyppiatt in The Children of Men by P D James, who is a similar character.

What character in a book can you connect with or relate to the most?

Questions from 8.15.07

  • Sep. 28th, 2007 at 7:52 PM
1. Would you choose to live forever if you had the choice?
Of course! What a waste of a question! I'd want to live forever alongside Lord Voldemort and cater to his every need. I am his most loyal Death Eater, and I intend to keep it that way.

2. What is the most important value you can pass onto your child?
I do not have children and the only important value I would pass on to them is "Toujours Pur" which means "Always Pure". It's the Black family motto, and it always has been. We're a pureblood family and we believe that only pureblood witches and wizards should be allowed to own a wand and attend a school where you learn to use your powers. It's the way it should be and maybe one day that will be achieved.

3. What can you say is truly yours?
My wand. It's mine, all mine. It picked me when I was 11 years old, standing in Mr. Ollivander's shop, waiting to see what kind of witch I'd become at Hogwarts.

4. At what moment in your life did you feel most proud?
When I performed my first Unforgiveable Curse in front of Voldemort. He praised me, telling me how talented I was at throwing those curses around at anyone that stepped in my way. I can't remember a moment I was more proud of.

5. Describe the place you grew up.
I lived in a dark, dingy house with my mother, father, and two sisters, Narcissa and Andromeda. We came home every summer holiday and Christmas holiday. It was a fine place to be, but nothing was better than Hogwarts. I could use magic there. I could be me.

I admit, I have been remiss. However, I have a new book and new characters and I need to flesh them out - so what better way than to ask them five questions?

My responses for Julia, protagonist in my new (nano) novel.

1. It's your choice, we can colonize the depths of the oceans or a new planet? Well, since I know my cat would hate, hate, HATE the mere thought of living under water, I think I'll go with the new planet.

2. Where do you go to be alone with your thoughts? My apartment, on the balcony. I live on the 17th floor of a 19 floor apartment building, so the view is pretty good - especially at night. The lights make pretty patterns.

3. Do you believe in mercy? Oh, absolutely! Although, sometimes death is a mercy compared to what they might have if they were alive.

4. How are you with very little sleep? Totally stupid until I get some coffee in me, then I'm totally wired AND totally stupid.

5. Name your price. Everyone has one, what is yours? I would do pretty much anything to get Her Catness and me home again to our apartment, with life before they came to get us.

Questions for 9/5

  • Sep. 19th, 2007 at 1:59 PM
I haven't been writing at all, so I haven't been answering. Can't very well answer questions for characters if you don't have any characters.

Written from the POV of Kate, the character in my contemporary romance, Fake, that was just started yesterday.

wei ling - wannabe bad girl...

  • Sep. 11th, 2007 at 4:18 PM
I have to admit, I'm a little ashamed of this character's behavior and by extension, her answers to this week's questions. Wei Ling is another minor character in my young adult, urban fantasy. She's one of my protagonist's two best friends and...well, to put it bluntly: girl's a bitch. Of course, to provide responses in anything but Wei's irreverent, devil-may-care voice would be a disservice to the character, but damn...does she have to be so rude?

It's your choice, we can colonize the depths of the oceans or a new planet?  Dude, WTF do I care about colonization? Look at this kick-ass, eighteen year old body--I’m insulted you’d waste my time with such a lame ass question. That shit is for losers who spend their weekends at Ren “faires,” or “role play” in their parents’ basements.

All right fine, because I’m a decent person I will pretend like your question matters and give you a considered answer. The ocean is so f***in’ over man! We should be out colonizing--no, conquering other worlds. Other galaxies. Earth kicks major ass. We should rule the whole f***in’ solar system if you ask me, which you did so--lucky you.

Where do you go to be alone with your thoughts? Holy f***in' gawd, what is this "Loser Emo Q&A Day?" Do I look like Zoie Reid to you? Why the hell would I a rockin’ hot chica like me want to be alone when I could be hangin’ wit’ my peeps--especially with my man, Eli. Day-um, that boy is caliente!

Do you believe in mercy? Are there any circumstances under which ruthless punishment is warranted? F*** no, mercy is for the weak. Mercy is for people like April and Zoie; okay--they are my two best friends in the whole world, but they have like no grasp on reality. This is a harsh f***in’ world man; it’s kill or be killed, yo.

How are you with very little sleep?  Y’all I live on no sleep, who needs it? I spend to much time in bed--well, not participating in other “activities” - *wink* *wink* - my body starts gettin’ restless yo. Couple of hours doin’ nothin', this girl’s gotta move!

Name your price. Everyone has one, what is yours? Baby, you couldn’t afford me. This chica’s expensive!

It's your choice, we can colonize the depths of the oceans or a new planet?
I'm not really fussed either way, as I think we have other problems we need to work out before colonizing places that aren't our own world, but then we've done a not-so-wonderful job with our world, that I'm not sure that continuing it into the oceans would be such a smart idea. In other words, I have no sweet clue what I think on this. We still have some time to go before we've advanced that far, science-wise. We can't even get people to visit Mars yet, and we seem to be having continual problems with our space shuttles - it'll be over a century before we can take a full civillization into space. As for the ocean - do we want to wreck that even more than it is already?

Where do you go to be alone with your thoughts?
Somewhere that isn't where all my bandmates are. Either band, really. Because I'm usually on tour, it's hard to get time for yourself - you usually share a hotel room with someone, and you see your bandmates for a good fourteen to even twenty hours a day (god I hate those long video shoots we keep ending up with), so there's always someone there. Usually, if I want to be by myself, I go to some random place away from everyone for a smoke (most of either band are non-smokers now - I'm the only one with the habit still. It's bad, I know, I'll eventually quit, I swear) and take my merry time with it.

Do you believe in mercy? Are there any circumstances under which ruthless punishment is warranted?
Hmmm... I do believe in mercy, but the person has to be truly and utterly remorseful for what they've done - they know what they did was wrong, they've repented as throughly as they could, and they've proven as such. I suppose I'm cynical, though, you don't see much of people doing that anymore. Ruthless punishment is warranted in cases of dangerous criminals and those who are a danger to society, and again, have proven themselves as so.

How are you with very little sleep?
Not very good. Apparently, I get ranty and slightly crazy, according to my brother. If I have to perform - I'm going to screw up everything. I may have a photographic memory, but it tends to go on stand-by if I don't have enough sleep.

Name your price. Everyone has one, what is yours?
Someone's SOUL! >:B Nah, I'm joking. In lieu of that, extremely good quality, expensive rum does in a pinch, if someone needs me that badly. (I'm just some musician - we're a dime a dozen anyway.)

let the cubbing begin.

we have a turnout of five percent. 5. FIVE percent. thereabouts.

so... the question is; why?

simple question. it doesn't have to do with inspiration... because we all know writers should just hammer at things regardless of whether or not they feel like it.

the acronym is: BICFOK (butt in chair. fingers on keyboard.)

five questions. far less than a short story. your character. or hell, use someone else's.... :::grins::::

Three characters here: first Marcelina from my modern epic "Consider Music", then Isidore and Almira from my fantasy story in the works.

for Marce, equality is a harsh aspiration )

After all, Isidore knows both sides of the issue )

Almira is after all, the mercenary )

Questions for 9.5.07

  • Sep. 7th, 2007 at 6:06 PM
Amy from Galaxy Farmers:

It's your choice, we can colonize the depths of the oceans or a new planet?
Oh this is unfair. Part of my job is help in the search for planets to colonize. So I guess I’ll have to go with that. Besides, I’m a soil scientist. Oceans are cool, but I’d rather play in the dirt.

Where do you go to be alone with your thoughts?
I’m pretty good at being alone with my thoughts no matter where I am. People don’t talk to me, much. Even if I sit at a table with a bunch of people, they usually just keep talking to each other.

But if I absolutely want to be alone, I go to my flower circle. It’s on deck 8, at the end of the garden. Lavender, roses, thyme, geraniums, black-eyed Susans… there’s so much life in that circle.

Do you believe in mercy? Are there any circumstances under which ruthless punishment is warranted?
Well sure, I believe in mercy. I think we should all be merciful as a general rule. Ruthless punishment, though: I guess I’d have to take it on a case-by-case basis. People who hurt children, dictators who use violence – get rid of ‘em. They’re useless.

How are you with very little sleep?
Sleepy. No really. I don’t think very clearly and I move slow. Been known to lay down right in the field and grab a nap. I actually sleep better outside, anyway. Especially if the planet is sentient. It’s such a comfort.

Name your price. Everyone has one, what is yours?
Well, that’s kind of cynical. But I suppose you could be right. I’m sure I have a price, but I’ve never had to figure out what it is. Maybe - pain, I guess. I have a pretty strong self-preservation instinct.

Ahh, I've lurked for too long. It's time to bring forth one of my muses from my various short stories that take place in the non-existent city in England that's sort of an alternative Regency London-type city. Without further ado, I give you the young butcher, Samuel Poole.
