    OEAM Art Contest
Just wanted to repost the art contest reminder. A little less than a month until works should be in. You CAN turn them in before if they're done. They should be at least 300 dpi and should be usable as the front page for OEAM and for pieces at Cafe Press.

    Here are the rules:

    Calling all Artists

We are announcing an art contest to find a new piece of art to adorn the homepage at Of Elves and Men. We also would like to use it on some gift items at our Café Press shop. The contest is open to anyone who would like to submit a piece of work.

    Here are the rules:

    1. Artwork should be original, not a depiction of anything from the LOTR movies. We do not wish to get into any trouble with New Line Cinema. Depictions from the books are what we are after.
    2. We are looking for a Tolkienesque landscape, more or less, though people can be included in the piece.
    3. Artwork cannot be photo manipulations. Again we do not want to run into any copyright issues.
    4. The winning piece will be exclusive to OEAM, though the artist will receive credit everywhere it’s used.
    5. Works should be high enough resolution that they can be used to make items at Café Press.

The prize for the piece chosen for the website is a $100.00 gift certificate at Amazon. I am also hoping to have banners made for all participants. Other prizes may be added later.

The dates for the contest are Aug. 2- Nov. 3. 2007. Work may be submitted during that time period and the winner will be announced over the US Thanksgiving holidays.

    Question
Hi there, I got a question about the guidelines of writing. I believed that is one of the guidelines of ALL slash writing sites. Hope I am right.

"No story may contain underage (under 18) persons real or ficitonal in a sexual situation."

    That made me wonder...

    How about the rape scene?

If a character was rape underage, even not graphically mentioned/ description, is it consider as underage sexual situation?

    Lifted from Dan simmons website...
    sent there by Jasta:

    Mark Twain’s Rules of Writing
(Freely adapted from his essay on the Literary Offenses of James Fenimore Cooper)

    1) A story shall accomplish something and arrive somewhere.

    2) The parts of a story shall be necessary parts of the story and shall help develop it.

    3) The people in the story (characters) shall be alive, except in the case of the corpses, and the reader should be able to tell the corpses from the others.

    4) The people in the story, both dead and alive, shall show a sufficient excuse for being there.

    5) The talk in a story (dialogue) shall sound like human talk, should be talk such as a human being would be likely to talk in the given circumstances, should be interesting to the reader, should help out the tale, and should stop when the people cannot think of anything more to say.

    6) When the author describes a character in his story, the conduct and conversation of that person shall justify the description.

    7) The author and characters shall confine themselves to possibilities and let miracles alone – or, if they must venture a miracle, the author must make it look possible and reasonable.

    8) The author should make the reader feel a deep interest in the characters of the story. The characters should be real enough that the reader will love the good ones, hate the bad ones, and care what happens to all of them.

    9) The characters shall be so clearly defined that the reader can tell beforehand what each will do in a given emergency.

In addition to these large rules, there are some little ones:

    The author shall . . . .

    10) SAY what he wants to say, not merely come near it.

    11) Use the right word, not its second cousin.

    12) Avoid a surplus of words.

    13) Eschew obfuscation.

    14) NOT leave out necessary details.

    15) Avoid laziness in writing style.

    16) Use good grammar.

    17) Employ a simple and straightforward style.

This bit from Marlowe's A Passionate Shepherd to his Love is your prompt:

    Come live with me, and be my love;
And we will all the pleasures prove
That valleys, groves, hills and fields,
    Woods or steepy mountain yields.

Write 200 words or more. Do not directly quote it, use the theme as your prompt. Any fandom or original work is fine. You can find the complete poem here: http://www.rjgeib.com/thoughts/shepherd/shepherd.html

    The Art of the Drabble
Since drabbles have exceedingly popular with new fanfic challenge communities opening every day, I thought I'd post the defintion of a drabble. I have hunted all over and every source I have found uses this one:

Set by the Birmingham University SF Society as thus: a self-contained vignette of exactly 100 words, no more, no less, with up to 15 more words are allowed for the title. Hyphenated words are in dispute. The term originates from a Monty Python skit: "Drabble. A word game for 2 to 4 players. The four players sit from left to right and the first person to write a novel wins." Drabbles started in British SF fandom in the late '80s. A half-drabble is fifty words long; a double drabble is 200 words long.

    I found it at http://www.subreality.com/glossary/terms.htm#D
