Critical Futures

|
|---|
|
First of all, this is a promotion of a personal project, cross-posted, and I'm new to your community, so if this is in some way a breach of etiquette, I am most story, and will gladly retract this post.
I'm starting a new project today and I wanted to spread the word. It's called Critical Futures, and in some respects its just a blog. Here's the catch: It's all fiction. All original science fiction.
I'm tycho garen, and I'm a young writer, I tend toward fun, but quirky science fiction long forms. At the moment I'm incredibly interested in historical narratives, and how a sense of history is incorporated into the construction of identities. Mostly I just try and write fun stories.
I'm posting this fiction to this blog, in part because I'm young, and in part because I'm quirky. I want to be a writer, and I've been saying this since I was 16, and there comes a point where you either are, or you're not. And there seems like there's no time like the present, and no better way to say "I am a writer." It seems that the best way to be a writer is to write regularly (Critical Futures will publish 300-500 words of fiction five days a week,) to submit work for publication, to finishing and to hold yourself accountable to an audience (this is where you come in.)
Critical Futures is cross posted to a live journal community ( criticalfutures), you can also subscribe to the feed if that's more your speed.
If you have questions about the format, the project, or my writing, please don't hesitate to write me, or discuss them in this thread. I look forward to hearing from you, and I'm once again sorry if I've posted this message in error. |

YOUR characters and their actions affect the world, the way it should be, so come and be a part of the plot!
Current Wants: Initiative members (canon or original) are especially wanted for this plot, particularly those of college age who live in the OSI campus house. We could also use some regular college students and professor.
We'd also love to see the following canons: Riley Giles Cordelia Oz Angel
check here for the full list
and any quality originals! Come join us
Summary: The year is 1998 - a government agency named OSI (think Initiative + Watchers Council) has control of the Hellmouth area in Sunnydale, California. The events of the the Buffy series never happened, but the mythology is the same. Join a world full of intrigues and plots, new twists on old canon favorites, and dynamic original characters! All we're missing is YOU. Friendly mods, excellent players, plots, storylines, character development questions, character spotlights, live chats, and more!
What we don't have: We don't have drama, Mary Sues, post length requirements, purple prose, set 'ships', controlling mods, or pre-planned plot outcomes.
Don't know the Buffyverse? No problem! Since we're not following the events of the actual series, you don't need to know the show well to play.
Original characters very welcome!

For all of us who have ever thought...what about a ...? Come here and share all of the things you've ever wished existed. Inspired by Oskar Schell's wonderous inventing in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, a novel by Jonathan Safran Foer.
"So what about skyscrapers for dead people that were built down? They could be underneath the skyscrapers for living people that are built up. You could bury people one hundred floors down, and a whole dead world could be underneath the living one. Sometimes I think it would be weird if there were a skyscraper that moved up and down while its elevator stayed in place. So if you wanted to go to the ninety-fifth floor, you'd just press the 95 button and the ninety-fifth floor would come to you. Also, that could be extremely useful, because if you're on the ninety-fifth floor, and a plane hits below you, the building could take you to the ground, and everyone could be safe, even if you left your birdseed shirt at home that day." |

|

|

The Creative Muse Society is holding an unofficial NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), and we want YOU to join in!
Our NaNoWriMo is a little different from the November one. Here's why:
-It's split up into two blocks. The first block goes from June 22nd-July 6th. The second goes from July 13th-27th. During both of these blocks, your goal will be 25k, which will generally give you 50k in total.
-You can use a current story as long as you do not count any words written before June 22nd towards it.
-There is a break between the blocks that will be used for gathering up word count totals and whatnot for the first break.
-The sign up week is June 22nd-30th.
Creative Muse Society is a message board for writers of various ages and genres coming together to focus on two things: world buliding and partnership through encouragement. It's our goal to help everyone struggling with the various aspects of world building. Because this is being hosted on our message board, we encourage any writers who decide to join the board to participate in the NaNo to stick around after it ends.
Interested in joining? The sign up thread and rules are here. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

...but still relevant, I think, as it realtes to writing, and certainly publishing.
I wanted to post here about WEbook.com. The site lets writers, readers, and amateur editors get together to write, edit, and publish books of any genre, fiction or nonfiction. Book projects on the site can be submitted for publishing based on a democratic voting system- the idea being readers should decide what gets published, and not any particular companies. You can go straight to the site, or check out "webook 101" at my lj. Feel free to leave questions or comments, etc! |

I'm sure you've seen a number of the prompt-based writing communities out there, and maybe even joined one or two (or more). The one I maintain, 50letters takes prompt-based writing challenges to a different level. Instead of having to write a full fic, poem, or scene for each prompt on the table you choose, you are responsible for writing some kind of letter based around the prompts. Now, when I say "letter", that means you can write in the form of a "hand-written" letter or even an email. If it's a written kind of communication (even telegrams would be interesting to see!), then go for it.
This comm is brand new, just started today, so the sky is the limit as far as claims that can be snatched up. If you're on the look out for a new kind of writing challenge, then 50letters may be the comm for you!

| » Shooting Stars - an original character RPG by Lab Arc Designs! |
 |
Fame! Fortune! Glory! Supernatural Occurrences?!
Welcome to 4-D Studios, the newest mecca of the film industry, located on fabulous Corona Island. Actors from all walks of life are flocking to this hub of creativity to get a chance at some of the newest, most offbeat television shows and movies ever produced, without the constraints of classic studio rules and jurisdictional laws. But there's something peculiar about Corona Island - for when the film is rolling and the scene has been set, actors become the characters they portray, from their thoughts to their fingernails. Is something nefarious going on, or are the Directors simply looking for the greatest show on Earth?
Shooting Stars is a roleplaying game set within the glamorous tropical location of Corona Island, that operates on three levels. You, the player, take on the role of the Agents who recruit talent for 4-D Studios' newest and most fabulous productions. You also play the Actors who work for them, interact, and do their best to make themselves the Superstars of the screen. When the cameras start rolling, you (and your Actors) play the Roles in the productions being filmed. Can you get your Actors into the best shows? Usher a new Superstar into the world? Make a name for yourself in the business as an Agent to the Stars? And can you find out what strangeness compels the Directors on their unusual agenda?
Find out in Shooting Stars, an original character RPG by Lab Arc Designs. |
How to Join Shooting Stars |
1. Read through the website and the Rules. Make sure this is the game for you.
2. Join the communities under your regular OOC journal. There is a list of communities on the website and on the Director's journal. You're accepted automatically- no player auditions here! If you don't have an OOC journal, or don't want people to know who you are, you may join under a character's journal. But what fun is that? There is no player audition - you want to join? Great! You're now an Agent - welcome to Shooting Stars.
3. Fill out an Agent Bio.
4. See the Quick Start Guide for instructions on how to make your Actors and participate in the game from there!
Questions? Comments? Need something explained, or assistance getting started? Message a mod directly via AIM at Lab Arc Designs or via email at L@labarc.com .

| » AU Supernatural, Buffy and Angel |
|
We have been writing together as just a group of disorganised friends for over two years now and decided that it was maybe time to set up some groups. All the games will centre round crossovers between Supernatural and Buffy/Angel with one or two elements from other shows thrown in here and there. We’re totally open to ideas from new writers for settings/characters etc which brings me to the most pressing reason for the ad. We are DESPERATE for Warren Meers (from Buffy) and Dean Winchester (from Supernatural). We did have them but due to a multitude of reasons you really don’t want to be bored with, we don’t anymore. So if anyone would be interested in picking either of these two up, we’d be eternally grateful. Other points that should be mentioned at this stage are – the characters are basically as they were in the shows but have been, and will continue to be, changed as the stories develop. No-one wants to deviate too far from the originals but people do change over time and in reaction to circumstances so if this sounds like something you would be happy to be involved in please contact one of the mods listed below:- pink_and_white_ribbons@yahoo.co.uk stakes_and_shotguns@yahoo.co.uk baby_pink_mood@yahoo.co.uk Storm.lights@yahoo.co.uk Everything is in the process of being set up at the moment, building our own little world in essence and some new blood would be more than welcome. At the moment, because of this there are no links to give you – we’re just throwing out the idea to see if there’s any interest. Anyone who likes the idea of building AU universes for the fandoms is more than welcome to let us know what ideas they have, or tell us about what they would love to see happen. We’re looking for people who are able to post frequently and are happy to get totally absorbed in the world we create. Each and every one of the games will be very adult in nature, ranging from for example, straight sex between Buffy and Angel to Sam Winchester being strapped down and tortured for hours and for that reason, please make sure your age is listed on your profile.

Hope this is allowed! Mods, please just delete if not.
shortest_story
Sometimes a couple of words is all you need to describe a moment in time. And that's the challenge here...
Shortest Story is a writing community wherein four 'titles' for snippets of original fiction are posted weekly. The titles will be single words or short phrases, and it's up to you how they should be interpreted - be creative!
You don't have to do every prompt, or even any, in any week, but it's more fun for all if you participate more than less. How you respond to the prompts is entirely up to you, just as long as it's inspired by the title. Also, you don't need to write lots for each prompt. This is all about communicating one scene, (though you can write more if you really want to).
Your friendly neighbourhood maintainers are shadowsaine and faenixx13, and we're always around to answer questions -- either comment on this entry or feel free to email/MSN Shadow (soulshadowdiamond at gmail dot com for both). We strongly encourage people to share their writing, and we also encourage constructive criticism on what's posted. shortest_story is small at the moment, but we'd love some new members and to become more active. Wander over and take a look -- we don't bite unless requested!

C'est La Vie - An Original Character Occupied Paris 1941 RPG
 |
C'est La Vie RPG takes place in the year 1941, in occupied Paris. Most of the gameplay will take place in that city. You can choose to play either side of the conflict - be a Nazi officer, or a Resistance fighter; or be primarily uninvolved - a foreigner in the city, or a neutral citizen. Some supernatural elements will be included in the game, so you can even pitch a supernatural character concept - though nothing over the top, please. The choices are many - please feel free to let your imagination wander and develop a well-rounded character. No Sues will be accepted. You may play as many characters as you can reasonably keep up with, but each must be applied for separately. Please apply for one at a time.
|
| How to Play C'est La Vie |
Play will take place over Insane Journal, though AIM or other chat medium may be used to play out a scene if desired. Posting will be third person past tense format in the community; first person format in personal journals of the characters. Occasional optional writing prompts and character development questions will be given for fun.
An extensive knowledge of WWII and occupied Paris is not required to play this game (though certainly, the more you know the better!). We have included all the relevant information you need to get started, and provided lots of links for things you might need to look up. Though mistakes will happen, please try to keep as close to period as possible. |
