kitty dandelions

Name:  imnisland

Age:  late 30s

Writing Experience:  Nothing published.
History: In 3rd grade I was told what a good writer I was but I honestly didn't see it. However, I continued to write throughout the years. In junior high I started sharing with friends and they really seemed to like it. In high school and college I've taken creative writing classes. Didn't really impress my teacher in high school but seemed to more impress the college set. In saying that, the darker my mood, the more it fuels my writing - however, I'm not an unusually dark writer, I don't think. I tend to write about the human condition though. Moreover, those really dark days have been behind me for quite a number of years and I've pretty much lost a lot of my inspiration to write. I'm trying to find my way back to writing here and there without having to utilize a dark mood to do so - and yet still crank out reading-worthy items. It's a real challenge.
Recently (within the last couple years), I started sharing my work again and received great feedback. I'm nervous about sharing though in a group of people who are actively interested in writing because none of my friends were/are, like I was.

Preferred Genres:  I have written some poetry but it tends to be what I call 'free-form' and doesn't really follow rules.

Otherwise, I just generally write snippits of short, general fiction.

Education:  Some college.

Country:  USA

What do you hope to get from this community?  I hope to get honest feedback from those that have a writing background vs. those who don't (as stated previously in the 'writing experience' space).

Where did you hear of us?  I was searching through friends-lists and saw this community, so decided to give it a go.

Leggo my Ianto, grumpy!jack

Name:  marvola

Age:  23

Writing Experience:  A bit of Torchwood fanfic and a few other bits and pieces, but nothing substantial yet. I'm trying to move away from fanfic at the moment and have signed up to take part in NaNoWriMo this year.

Preferred Genres:  Fiction, short stories at the moment.

Education:  Currently in my final year of an English and Media Studies degree.

Country:  Ireland.

What do you hope to get from this community?  I'm hoping to get tips and tricks and encouragement in finding my own voice. I'm hoping to get constructive criticism on what I write and I'm hoping to learn to be more disciplined. It's all very well and good saying 'I want to be a writer' but that's never going to happen until I start actually writing!

Where did you hear of us?  Through a search in lj interests.

misc: two hands to hold a heart
Name: Heather
Age: 20
Writing Experience: I was "president" of creative writing club in high school, (not that it really qualifies for anything. I made cupcakes a few times for everyone, haha.) won a few hs lit mag awards that don't really count for much. Freshmen year of college I won 2nd in a college writing contest. Sophomore year I became the editor of the literary magazine. This year, junior year, I'm studying abroad in Chile, leaving all of my responsibilites behind. I'm still trying to write though. I'm trying to compile a portfolio that will let me get into the advanced fiction writing class next semester, when I get back to the US.
Preferred Genres: Fiction, short stories. I like reading good poetry though. I just don't feel like I'm in a place to write it. I also write lyrics because I'm in a "band" with my brother.
Education: Junior in college, majoring in English Creative Writing and Spanish, with a minor in French. But I suck at French.
Country: Currently, Chile. Normally, the US.
What do you hope to get from this community? Some good critiques mostly. Maybe some new additions to my friends' list. I sometimes get in moods where I like to edit things and provide constructive criticism, but usually only if I like the story/poem/whatever to begin with.
Where did you hear of us? I really don't remember. I've been watching the community for a while now.

What do you hope to get from this community?  Feedback on my novel, and maybe even some inspiration! I also hope to help and inspire others as much as I possibly can.

Dean Lucas

Name:  D. L. Fitzwater

Age:  25

Writing Experience:  A lot of mostly writing by myself, every day. Have taken several writing courses, most in college and done workshop style. was a co-founder of a writing group that sadly only had two people in it. Currently In production of a play that I have written.

Preferred Genres:  Mostly I seem to be able to express my self in short fiction. But I dabble in almost all forms of fiction. Not quite a "Jack of all trades, Master of none." About the only genre I avoid is poetry. It escapes me and my abilities for whatever reason.

Education:  Some college.

Country:  United States.

What do you hope to get from this community?  I hope to get constructive feedback from people who don't have an incentive to lie to me as they feel they are emotionally supporting me by saying, "oh sure it's not bad." and then quietly mumbling something else.

Where did you hear of us?  Saw you on a friends list randomly.

Name: Katie
Age: 18
Writing Experience: Not a whole lot. My high school didn't offer any creative writing courses. So basically I've just kind
of dabbled in writing here and there and gotten feedback from a couple friends.
Preferred Genres: I basically just do occasional poetry, and random freewrite descriptions. Hoping to get more into bigger
and better things, but I'm still trying to get myself back into writing after a two year hiatus.
Education: High school graduate Country: Good ol' US of A What do you hope to get from this community? Motivation to start writing again, honest and brutal feedback, a chance to
get a better grasp on the finer points of writing
Where did you hear of us? I put a post on my own journal when I was in a week-long spell of insomnia, asking people to
recommend people or communities they found interesting. I only got two responses, and this was listed in one of them.
EDIT: While I'm here, I figure I should introduce myself with the most recent writing I've done...I'll post more in time, but it is strongly encouraged here that I leave feedback as well (the main reason I joined) and I haven't done so yet, and probably won't until maybe later this evening or tomorrow, so for the time being I'll just leave it at this.

There was never much in that room, considering its size. A computer on the desk in the corner, where we all kept our own music playlist. A stack of bags of blankets that were meant to be sold but always got rearranged into a bed for all of us to use at once. A small TV in the corner. A shelf that stood awkwardly in the middle of the room, with stacks of movies and games for the Playstation. But it made for good memories, and I miss the long hot summer days we spent there.

I miss bad poetry, and even worse jokes that only we understood.

I miss long movies on a thirteen inch screen, and arguments over video games.

I miss limbs for pillows and bodies for blankets, and total comfort and no boundaries.

I miss pictures I was never in and silly games I never played.

I miss the constant music playing, a soundtrack to insignificance, that we hardly cared to acknowledge.

Thirteen of us against the rest of the world. We practically lived in that part of the building during that summer. But things have to change, I guess, and the ownership of the building was a perfect example. The large room was sold and is now a clothing shop. The clothes are cute, but the memories were better.

GaGa Red
Hello everyone, I'm new here. I've been lurking for a day or two now and I decided I might as well take the plunge and start by filling out this little introduction survey.

Name: Kelly (or fbi_woman, whatever you're more comfortable calling me)
Age: 19
Writing Experience: Just the high school english I was forced to take and a bit of hobby writing in fanfiction and, more recently, original fiction.
Preferred Genres: I prefer fan fiction to be completely honest, but I also write originals and the occasional poor quality poem (I hated poetry my whole life and never read or studied it in school).
Education: I've completed one year of biological science in university, but I took a year off to think about what I want to do, and now I intend to go to college in the fall for either travel and tourism or film editing/media arts.
Country: Canada
What do you hope to get from this community? Some more feedback on my original works, which I hope to publish someday, and to learn more about writing in general, technique, and what interests me.
Where did you hear of us? I just searched writing in the interests search box.

Hello, all! I'm sorry it took me so long to get this posted, but I wanted to critique a few pieces beforehand, just to be safe with the whole 2:1 critique-and-post ratio rule.
Onward!

Name: I'd prefer to be called Lyssa-Ann.
Age: 15
Writing Experience: I don't have much underneath my belt; I've gotten some recognition for my writings back in middle school, and I've won an essay-writing competition for D.A.R.E. back in the fourth/fifth grade (can't remember which grade, exactly).
Preferred Genres: I'm into romantic fiction; the occasional fantasy/angst story catches my eye if it's good enough. I also like poetry/musical lyrics of all sorts.
Education: I'm a freshman in high school (9th grader). Random note: I'm home schooled.
Country: The United States.
What do you hope to get from this community?: From this community, I'd like to get the confidence and self-esteem I so desperately need in my writing abilities. Oh, and I'd also love some REAL criticism, the kind that isn't completely idiotic or useless.
Where did you hear of us?: I was searching through different writers' communities on LJ, and this was one that looked incredibly promising. I hope it doesn't disappoint! :)
