A Dirty Job indeed

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Congratulations, A Dirty Job! You're setting a milestone for me; my first bad review for a book. It wasn't easy for you to do, I'm sure. You started off great, had some wholly original ideas and a damned funny style of executing it, but in the end you just pissed me off. Mild to moderate racism, undo drastic character changes, schmoopiness, and introducing important new elements three-fourths of the way through the book. But in the end it was the unrealistic schmoop that got me.

Expect a full review over at doorQ sometime this weekend.

*grumbles*

Also, has anyone else noticed how Obama is, I dunno... changing his policies a bit much? Like, y'know, how he's now trying to unite Europe and the US in this War On Terror as opposed to the whole "Let's shorten this as much as is conceivably possible and do what we can to take our hands out of their asses." It's kind of the exact opposite, I think.

I liiiiiiiive...but others aren't so lucky

Time for my customary "I'm not dead, I'm just in Wisconsin!" post. Last year, my grandparents' neighbours didn't secure their wireless internet so I could go online whenever it suited my fancy (and I sat in the room closest to the house), but this year they've caught wise, and thus I rely on the free Wi-Fi provided by the general store, that makes a damn good chai tea.

Hm. Well, it's been a fun vacation so far, and I haven't gotten sunburned! (Yet.) Unfortunately, my little sister has caught some sort of bug, and feels extremely under the weather right now. We hope it will pass quickly.

We bought maple syrup today from a farm that grows the maple trees, taps the syrup, and bottles it all on the premises. It is Good Stuff, as you might imagine. However, since they can't gad about all day to see if people want to buy it, they shove it in a cabinet outside the farmhouse along with a tupperware container and a sign that says "SELF-SERVE, PLEASE LEAVE MONEY".

I love small towns.

---

Also, we must bid a sad but fond farewell to my faithful camera. Having seen me through many fruitful years with nary a complaint, my beloved Canon Powershot plunged to its ultimate demise in Gooseberry Falls, MN, yesterday. Let us have a moment of silence.

---

It is to Canon's credit, however, that sliding down a rocky slope and free-falling down a thirty-foot drop didn't actually kill the camera. I found it mostly in one piece, give or take a few joints that needed snapping back into place and minus a button. No, what ultimately did my trusty camera in was the six inches of water that broke its fall. Well, you can't win them all. I rescued the camera, complete with memory card and batteries; time will tell if the few photos on the memory card can be salvaged, since my laptop doesn't come with a card reader.

I'll be home on Monday, so until then!

So, after sleeping... *does math* ... nearly 14 hours straight (with a small break in between to flail minorly about boards), I feel a bit more human. Still hate pretty much all of yesterday morning, but more human. So, I need a list of things to do today, since I'm not on call. (yay)

To Do
Laundry
Clean room
Walk to farmer's market, check out fruit
Vacuum
Water plants/sweep backyard
Buy stuff for dinner
Cook dinner

I am the Queen Mother of Pessimism ... or something like that.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
It's 9:21am and my parents just took off with my kids for six days. Am I celebrating? No. I'm all teary-eyed because I've never been away from them for so long and I have this debilitating fear that something will happen and I will never see them again. So yeah, not happy that they're going to have a great fun time, just all pessimistic and worried that the worst will happen. My glass is definitely half empty.
Mom and Dad are taking them to Mammoth Caves in Kentucky (a nine hour drive where they won't be able to squabble in the back seat because Grandpa won't put up with that nonsense), two days there, then stopping in Cincinnati for some big aquarium and another day at a waterpark. Then home on Wednesday.
This freaked-out worrying of mine has to stop. I can't spend the next six days on pins and needles, hoping they'll be okay. I don't know how my hubby can stand going out of town for work all the time, I'd have to find a new job. Hopefully he secretly planned something fun for us to do to distract me. Shit, even something unfun (he was talking about getting a big load of mulch for the yard while they're gone) would be better than this.
Crying again now. I guess I'll go take a shower or do some laundry or something. Gah!

In other news, the State Government has announced a trial of train ticket concessions for off-peak hours in the western suburbs. I thought they were already doing that? That's been my experience recently, anyway.

I guess maybe they're just expanding it.

Did I seriously complain in Community Service about it being too slow?

*has not sat down for... um. Since 9am.*

In other news, my inpatient horse is now someone else's inpatient horse because the service chief decided to spread the cases around a little more evenly, and my inpatient dog still has both eyes, despite her best efforts.

Drabble Meme!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Stolen from [info]boz4pm (even if I missed the deadline):

First five comments with a fandom, pairing or single character, and prompt will get a drabble. If you ask for something you need to post this on your journal and offer five of either art or fic that you do, too.

Canons available:
Doctor Who (most Doctors)
LotR
Jack Spratt mysteries
Star Trek
Star Wars
Flashpoint (even if it did just start)
Ironman (but it'll be bad, for serious, and it'll be movieverse)
X-men (see: Ironman)

So, evidently my hematocrit is kinda crappy, so I won't be donating blood either. Maybe that's why I've been tired lately - not enough steak.

Got a coupon for free ice cream though.

...

Too bad it's not Ben and Jerry's. Mmmm, Chocolate Therapy.

Alright people, what's a tasty Baskin Robbins flavor, heavy on the chocolate (or, alternatively, heavy on the 'omg that's tasty')?

IT CAME IT CAME IT CAME IT CAME! I so excited! Not leaving the DVD player at all. Nope, never.

Addendum: 3:20 pm - Got the DVD at 12:30, and just finished the first season already. Only reason I'm taking a break now is because I'm going to be brainstorming a photoshoot with my tranny friend Ken, makeup girl/coworker Melissa, and costumer/flatmate Ashleigh. IT'S GONNA BE TIGHT, Y'ALL!

Also, I'm going to be setting up the 72 Hour Photo Project again real soon. Keep an eye out for details.

Thought:

When you're running an event that requires not only volunteers, but involves potential pain and phobias, don't be rude to said potential volunteers. No, I don't have an appointment, your liaison here said I didn't need one. It's not my fault you overbooked for 8:30. Most people have this thing called schedules, get one.

NEW ICONS (and meme)

NEW ICONS! Five of them, even :D So to celebrate, I'm going to make up a meme! If you don't give a shit about memes you can just look at the purty shiny's-- or not. Whatever. I'm just entertaining myself by this point.

In other news, was utterly wasted today all day long. For no good reason. But I made a client happy, so go team me.

Kippur's random Dr.Who continuity comment:

I wonder if people in Brittan wonder where Saxon went? Since they remember voting for him but nothing after the point where Saxon/the Master takes over. He'd been around for eighteen months before the Doctor shows up. After all that's how the Valiant was made and that's still around.

Think I'm going to try really hard to get Friday off.

Sister and I are going to go see Mom on Thursday. It'll be her one-year anniversary. Won't be in the mood to start taking calls again anytime afterwards.

Just...fuck.

If I take the Photoshop book with me home it should be okay.
I'm not ready anyway with them not even fully training us. Idiots.

The prospect of being alone right now makes my stomach hurt because I tend to think too much.

(Need to get more Citalopram.)

For a guy who doesn't dance I sure as hell have a lot of opinions

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Dearest street dancers,

Breakers do it right-- I implore you, take a note from them. Tricks aren't necessary, but power is the key. Seriously. Breakdancers got that shit right in the 80s and have only been getting better.

Pop n' Lockers, y'all are just outdated. Sorry. You might as well put on red overalls and call yourself Rerun.

Tektonic? You guys just look lazy. Lazy pretentious French kids taking a cue from 80s US culture and who've got flexible arms.

Voguers, get off the crack.

Krumpers and clowners: David LaChappelle managed to make you look cool in Rize, I'll give you that much. But take it to the next level and start doing windmills, then you'll be set.

Truthfully yours,
Jeremy

PS: For those who don't know, I'm slightly more qualified than I probably sound like to be talking shit. Growing up in the SFV, those dance movies coming out lately of hard ass dance crews fucking each other up that sound so fake? Yeah, that wasn't too far off base in the Sylmar/San Fernando/Pacoima area. I knew a lot of breakers, and I knew a lot of the drama. It was kinda ridiculous.

Also, I'm just a hater :D

Getting sick two days before Comic Con is not an option. I will still go. Sick or not sick. There will be no further discussion on this subject.
