World Refugees
Where Will You Be?
An ongoing LiveJournal RPG that started as a Kingdom Hearts-themed answer to a zombie-invasion meme and turned into an epic retelling of the games.
After barely surviving a Heartless invasion, several youths from Earth were scattered across the worlds of the Disney mythos with little more than the clothes on their backs and their laptops. Using a worlds-spanning Internet connection, the newly-dubbed Refugees forged a support network of friends as they struggled to survive and watched as the story of Kingdom Hearts unfolded.
Their initial plan had been to avoid meddling with the game’s canon at all cost and wait until Earth was restored along with all the other worlds at the end of the story. The first part of the game ended with Xemnas discovering the community and Earth’s restoration. Several Refugees returned home, but many others stayed in the other worlds, laying the groundwork for a resistance against the Organization, who planned to use their knowledge of the “prophecy” of the games to defeat Sora and his allies.
One year later, the Refugees, struggling with the memory loss from Chain of Memories, found themselves thrown back into adventure, facing off against Organization XIII for the events of Kingdom Hearts II.
The “prophesied” story changed dramatically when Songbird, the Nobody of a girl who had died during Earth’s invasion, joined forces with Xemnas and the Organization. Their goal: to complete Kingdom Hearts and use its power to destroy the Universe and set up a utopia known as the Dreaming.
Forgetting all about maintaining canon now, the Refugees allied themselves with Sora and fought against Organization XIII while also struggling with clashes of ideals amongst themselves.
World Refugees is both celebrated for its faithfulness to characterization and criticized for breaking canon. The cast has been added to and subtracted from over time, but the core group of characters has largely remained the same.
