Laptop!

Hey, everyone. First time poster, long time lurker here. Wanted to say that I love this community; everyone's so supportive and stuff. :D

Anyway, on to my question. I'm getting a new laptop, and it's gonna be a Mac, and I want to be able to play WoW without many problems. However, my tech knowledge is sketchy at best, so I was wondering if you gals had any suggestions for what I should look for. I'd like to be able to do raids when my main comes of age, and maybe battlegrounds. Otherwise, I usually solo, grouping only for instances and really hard quests. I also RP, if that makes a difference.

I was also wondering if anyone had suggestions for add ons for a hunter, just for general use. Specifically a damage meter or something that tracks cooldowns, if that exists.

Thanks in advance! :D

Not Amused

[info]j_pook

I upgraded my PC a few weeks ago and I'm using Vista instead of XP. When I got the new PC, rather than reinstalling WoW I copied the whole WoW folder from my old PC to the new one. I haven't had any problems so far, all my addons were exactly how I had them on the last PC.

But I can't find any new screenshots I take :(

They don't seem to drop into the Screenshot folder for WoW on my PC. Anyone else had this problem? Where have my screenshots gone?

Computer Setup.

Well its sort of on topic becasue i'm facing this dillema due to WOW. My husband and I both play - I on my trusty old gateway (that seems to play better with its built in card then with graphic cards I tried with it) and he plays currently on his shiny new gateway. the reason he has a shiny new comp is becasue his old one broke down and we didn't have much hope for it being fixed. turned out that the harddrive was shot so they had to get a new one for us which took forever and a day. But we actualy got his old (relatively - its actualy newer then the one I'm using now) computer back and that computer is faster then mine

herein lays the dillema. i do not want to retire my trusty gateway - it does a good job, it plays WoW reasonably well, it has tons of software on it that I won't be able to move to the other comp, but use on almost a daily basis not to mention all the saved files I have on it. However - the other computer will actualy allow me to be a more efficient clicker in raids becasue of the higher framerate it would give me.

But - we have limited space, so I cannot set up a third system in our little media nook, and herein lays a question. is there any accesable, inexpensive way for me to get both towers working off the same keyboard and monitor without having to unplug/replug the towers everytime I need to switch from playing to working? I know that multiboxers do that somehow, but I'm a huge noob when it comes to those setups (it took me forever to figure out how to link his and my computers so that we could use the same cable modem). is there some sort of switchboard I could use or something? i don't even need those two computers working at the same time (multiboxer I'm not, lol one character takes up all of my attention, even two would be too much), i just need to be able to switch between then when I need to work, or want to play.

Is there hope, or should I just give up, stick with my old computer and let the newer one gather dust?

Thank you ladies in advance.

err?

So a friend of mine is having this issue... he can play WoW just fine on all of his characters except one, which is his main. He logs on, and it's fine for a while, but then the game lags like crazy and eventually stops and tells him that it's out of memory and doesn't have enough storage. But he has all kinds of space and 3 gigs of ram, and is only running WoW and Vent. He had this problem with all of his characters before, and tried running the repair tool, deleting the WTF folder, reinstalling the game, etc., which fixed the problem on all of his characters but his main. Now it's just his main doing this lagging to a stop thing, and no amount of deleting the folder or the repair tool or anything will fix it.

I seem to recall that someone in this community had a similar issue recently. Can anyone offer advice for me to pass along? Is this something on his end, or is it an issue with the character itself?

Graphical Errors Galore!! *sad face*

I have cause for sad face. My WoW has decided to go completely kaput on me. The textures are flying off meshes/models, and I don't know what's going on. My graphics card is up to date, well-taken care of, and not overheating.

Before you ask, NO my mods are NOT causing these errors. I've played without them, moved the fabled WTF folder and tried playing. It still didn't work. I've run the WoW repair tool, to no avail. Heck, it even happens on the character selection screen sometimes!

It makes my game basically unplayable, since I'm constantly being attacked by these flying renegade meshes. It's been happening for a while, but tonight in particular it sucks. Help! :(

Any of you tech-savvy ladies have any ideas to help me? I posted this in the tech support forums, but I expect very little in terms of actual support from them.

So, the game has pretty much become unplayable for me now.My ISP, Optimum Online, seems to be having issues with WoW; and I'm not the only one alone on this matter - There is a whole 15 page thread in the tech support section for it. Apparently it's on WoW's end, not OO's. I'm thinking about stepping away from the game right now and work on something; or maybe a new game; because when you can't talk to NPC's every 5 minutes and have to reboot WoW just to level a alt to do 2v2's with your brother on another server, it gets on your last nerve. At first I thought it was Medivh being mildly retarded; but it's happening on the server me and my brother picked, Ravencrest, as well(We decided to do this for fun over the summer. Since..we're actually getting along.)

Anyone else a disgruntled WoW player right now? I mean, it might not be exactly them(it's apparently because OO's(or other ISP's in the NE region) not a high priority on packets on ATT's network); but it's frustrating. And skimming over the thread, a bunch of other people in the Northeast area with different ISP's have been having lag issues like I have, only on WoW. It's upsetting that I may have to leave a game I like for a while because of this.

(Hope this post made sense. Ear is killing me right now and I'm still trying to resist the doctors.>.> VIVA LA RESISTANCE)

Building a WoW Rig

I dug a bit in the technical tags and could not find what I was I was looking for, so I apologize in advance if I missed it and this is a repeat.

I am looking into building a new gaming rig specifically for wow and multi tasking. But after doing some research I suddenly feel OLD OLD OLD :P Things have changed so much since I built my last rig 5 years ago. After attempting to research over the last few days I just find myself more confused than ever as to what the best build is going to be for the high end of a midrange budget.

I was hoping some of our more Tech savvy girls could point me in the right direction to building my new WoW machine. I am looking for something that I can use stock and that can be fairly easily upgradeable as needed over the next 4 to 5 years. I don't want to have to mess around with the hassles of overclocking. Since I am going to have to buy my parts piece by piece over the next couple of months I am going to figure my budget out around $2000 to $2500. (Hopefully its sooner my poor little pc cant handle raiding any more and I miss it!)

Thanks in advance for any advice or linkage you can provide :)

Can you install WoW on an external harddrive?

My computer is old. At least 5 years old...and it sports a 30G harddrive. As you can guess, WoW takes up most of it.

I keep programs to a minimum. All my music, drawings, screenshots, etc...are stored on my 100G external harddrive. I frequently move my screenshots to my external harddrive. I frequently make sure that every program I have installed is something I use, and uninstall/delete what I don't use. I also defrag my computer.

Yet I have less than 2GB of free space left. This is troubling...as WoW continues to be updated with patches. This last one was 15MB. When I moved from Florida I accidently left all my discs behind for my computer...so I can't completely wipe my computer clean and go from there.

The other solution is to buy a new tower...which I want to do, but I lack the funds to do it.

On my external harddrive I have over 80 gigs free. I would love to use it for WoW, since it has the capabilities to hold it, along with my music and other things. It would easily free up 15G on my normal harddrive.

But how do I go about installing it? Can it even be done?

Thanks in advance.

Odd question

Is anybody else getting an entirely black screen for blood elves at the character select screen? All of my other raced characters are fine, but the belfs screens are completely black except for the ui and their name.

I was wondering if it was a problem for more people than just me.

I have a...technical question for all of you.

I'm trying to reinstall WoW after a reformat. I'm running Windows XP Home now, and I keep getting an error when I try to start up the game.

It did it after I'd installed both the base game and BC, and also with just the base game.

I get this error message: There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive E.

Any ideas on why it does this? I have no idea what disk I'm supposed to insert, and I don't remember a disk being required to play. When I put the first disk of the base game in, thinking that might be the correct one, it still gave me a 'fatal' error saying that memory couldn't be referenced at some spot. Any idea why it's doing this, or should I just deal with it and call Blizz customer service?

Same theme, new variation

Thanks bunches to everyone who took the time to comment yesterday about running WoW on a laptop.  I got so much info that I never even would have thought to ask about.  You gals (and guys) are great.

But...

I'm still a wee concerned about Vista due to my lack of technical abilities.  So, many people mentioned Mac computers.  I figured, if I'm gonna lay out that much cash in one shot then I need to make sure I'm getting exactly what I want.  Does the Mac edition of the the game, downloads and other updates happen as frequently as they do for PC?  I think WoW wasn't even available for Mac for a while.  Is that correct or am I way out there on this one?

Again, thanks in advance for your time.

(Dr. Who) Wanna ride my TARDIS?

[info]simply_blah

My adventures in Outland...

Are not what I expected at all because... )

And a question about Warsong Gulch...

My level 19 Warlock was playing, Alliance side. Three clothies (mage, priest and myself) were doing a fair job of defending the flag. I'd dot, fear, the mage would blast, the priest would heal. At first it was just one or two Hordies running after the flag, then we got slammed! It was normal WSG behavior until the Horde with our flag gets to the top of the roof, the part where you're coming out of the tunnel.

There's the high part, where you can walk on and then beneath that there is a tiny alcove and that's where he stayed along with a shammie. ><

I feared him. I feared him multiple times but he never walked off the stupid roof. I DOT'ed him so did others but we could never get to that spot where he was.

Help? Suggestions?

I finally left because they started camping our graveyard and it became clear that they weren't going to cap anytime soon.

DA PHASERZ

Hey all~

I have SEVERE lag whenever I try the smuggling mana cells daily. I want this fancy effect off when I'm there, so what do I have to adjust in my video settings?

I've tried turning off the specular glowing and the death effect to no avail... it would be wonderful to find out how to make it so it's less laggy in the smuggling mode.

Random resets and addon woe?

I'm at my wits' end trying to figure this one out.

My boyfriend's computer has abruptly started resetting itself. It likes to do it most of all during raids - I think it's only done it one time outside of a raid, but when we're raiding it will do it several times. We've vaguely wondered if it's Ventrilo-related.

He also notes that some of his addons (looking at PerformanceFu) are absolutely chewing up memory, using hundreds of kilobytes per second. PitBull and Group Calendar are the usual culprits. The same versions don't do this on my PC.

Windows XP SP2, system fans seem fine, no evidence of overheating, virus and spyware checks are clean. I don't know what to suggest to him. :(

I have a technical question. I've been trying to take screenshots of my character, which is print screen, right? Well where do they go after you take them? I've been told in the screenshot folder in the wow folder, but there isn't any screenshot folders in my WOW folder. I run Windows Vista, so I'm sure that makes it a little different. But I have no idea, and I want pics of my character. WAAAAAA. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Possible Technical Issues

I recently got my sister started playing WoW. She has a laptop she plays on and my mom took an interest in the game. My mom downloaded the trial version to her computer and made a trial account. She can play it on my sisters' laptop just fine, but she has issues with it on her PC.

She logs in and it goes to the 'Suggest Realm' page. She checks her location off and the type of server she wants, clicks the button and a blank shadow box comes up. No realm suggestion, no options at all, just cancel. I logged the account on my own computer and chose a realm, and created a character, thinking it might send her on through to it, but she still can't get past that page.

I don't really see anything like this in the WoW tech support forums, so I can't figure out what to do. Anyone have any ideas on what to try?

EDIT: I found a post on the tech support forums that addressed the issue. We're not able to test it yet because of the hardware maintenance, but I wanted to leave the instructions here in case someone else has this issue come up.

Go into your files C drive > Program Files > World of Warcraft > WTF

Once you're there you right-click the config WTF file and Open With Wordpad (not Notepad). Scroll down to SET realmName and then put the desired realm name in the quotation marks.

Save. (not Save As) Close.

Then open WoW and log on.

Hopefully this works. =)

Problems logging on?

Ok, was playing on Kirin Tor this morning and kept getting kicked off, so after dying repeatedly while trying to gather ravager eggs I gave up and went on to do RL things instead of playing WoW. I was thinking it might be our internet having issues. It's now been two hours or so later and I go to log into WoW. Instead of getting my normal log in screen with all my pretty toons I get the generic pick a realm screen, so I check the appropriate boxes and am told I am recommended for the Caleastera realm. I opt to view realm lists and lo and behold, there's only a dozen (maybe) realms listed, none of them mine. So, anyone else having this issue. I ask here because I'm not seeing any notes on the WoW login page nor are there any realms listed in being down on the Realm Status page. Thanks much!
