Random resets and addon woe?
I'm at my wits' end trying to figure this one out.

My boyfriend's computer has abruptly started resetting itself. It likes to do it most of all during raids - I think it's only done it one time outside of a raid, but when we're raiding it will do it several times. We've vaguely wondered if it's Ventrilo-related.

He also notes that some of his addons (looking at PerformanceFu) are absolutely chewing up memory, using hundreds of kilobytes per second. PitBull and Group Calendar are the usual culprits. The same versions don't do this on my PC.

Windows XP SP2, system fans seem fine, no evidence of overheating, virus and spyware checks are clean. I don't know what to suggest to him. :(

Mebbe he should try going cold turkey on the addons? I did recently, and while it doesn't make that much difference to my shitty computer, it can be a breathe of fresh air. Also a badly coded or out of date mod can sometimes cause disconnects and things.

He may have a corrupted file in his WTF folder. I recently had an issue with WoW refusing to load a character and dying with an out of storage error, trying to claim more than 1G of memory! I had to delete (I moved it to another directory out of the WoW folder, just in case that wasn't the problem) my WTF folder to correct it, though apparently removing the Cache folder (which isn't too bad to lose, while if you have to remove the WTF folder you lose macros and addon settings as well, sigh) will help for some people. Once I did that it loaded fine, and only used about half a gig of memory, and that was with a ton of addons still running.

It's entirely possible he's getting a blue screen, but doesn't have the "reset on error" option turned off in windows. the BSOD error could be related to ventrilo - bad sound card driver - or the memory - bad memory sector, but it's also possibly about a hundred other things (those are just top of my head).

I'd suggest he update the drivers for everything on his computer, especially video and sound cards and disable the BSOD option so he can at least note the error message. It's under control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery (the auto restart on error or some such notation)

Check for IRQ conflicts, that was giving me lockups. 9/10 times I'd never get the BSOD, just a full system freeze. As for how to do that, I got a walkthrough from one of my buddies but I'm sure google can help.

"Automatically restart"? He did have that enabled; I've turned it off and we shall see what we shall see.

He's running the current version of his video drivers - also the current versions of his audio and LAN drivers. I'm reinstalling them all just to be on the safe side.
