Swearing @ state WoW tax.

What the fucking fuck?

Players in select states around the U.S. have found that their monthly subscription fee is slightly higher than expected. With the rise of many online subscription-based services, several states have begun to apply a tax to services that use such a model, and this tax is an additional cost that players are seeing added onto the base subscription rate.

Specifically, residents of the following states will be charged this tax:

Illinois
Massachusetts
New Mexico
New York
Texas
Washington

Fuck you state. I get to pay $1.26 more a month because I live in the craptastic shithole called Washington. Cool.

Yeah, I should have known Illinois would get their cut. They will blow it on hookers and booze and our streets will still have potholes and our mass transit system will still be under funded. Dammit

At the most it would be 5%, because Blizzard isn't in a province :D

But they won't, as blizz isn't in Canada, so we're FREE!

Ok the only way that would make sense to me, would be for them to charge taxes in states where Blizz has offices/servers/etc.

Except their headquarters is in Irvine, CA right?? But CA's not on the list. Not that I'm complaining. But....how the hell does that make sense???

The internet is not localized to one specific state, so how dare they charge extra for it? Boo on them.

Really? Washington doesn't charge other services. You don't pay tax on haircuts, for instance.

Ohwell, get what you vote for. The year I left you guys voted in a lower care registration which bankrupted the highway program. If there wasn't a new casino in my home town, I'm sure it woulda rolled up and blown away.

In reality, the number of state - in comparison to all of them, anyways - isn't that bad. Yes, it sucks.

I had the misfortune of moving from one WoW-taxed state to another, no escape for me. Bah.

Washington has ridiculous taxes in general though, I think. I didn't really feel taxed up the wazoo until I moved here from NY.

Buying game cards is what i SHOULD do, hadn't thought about that. My 10% employee discount DOES save me the 8.9% tax...

(p.s. whoever's mom works at target, now you've got me wondering if it's the same target I work at.)

What? How is this legal? I mean I absolutely don't doubt it's being done but I just don't quite understand how it's justified. Game cards sound like the way to get around that though of course you pay sales tax on them so I guess it depends on which tax is higher.

You work in a GameStop? Sweet!

I went into a GameStop the other day with a friend who was buying the WoW Battlechest (WoW & BC in one), and the person behind the counter had never heard of WoW - they didn't even know that it was a PC game. When we finally found the box, the worker *still* didn't know what it was. Yet apparently they've worked there for some time.
We puzzled over that for about half an hour...as my friend pointed out, WoW has more subscribers than the population of some countries. How could you work at a game store and not know what it was??

Heh. But anyway, I actually love GameStop and the one I usually go to is staffed by awesome people. So that must be a fun job.

I've been paying tax on WoW for the last 3 years in Utah. It bites. Although, if I weren't lazy I could get around it with game cards since I also get a discount on them if I go to Gamestop (I work for Barnes & Noble and we get a discount at Gamestop, and Gamestop employees get a discount at B&N). So, really, it's just a laziness tax.
