New Voice Chat
Tried out the new voice chat in a pug and when the other players realised I was female then I was flirted and hit on till we finished the run. How many other people have run into this same occurence in game?

I haven't- but then again, I have used my sparse raiding experience to perfect my 'I'm so bored, tell me when the noobs are done QQing' voice...

No, but I did encounter a fun incident where a nine year old and an eleven year old told me they wished THEIR mom played wow.

I'm only 22. ;_;

the scary thing is that the nine year old was a decent tank... I felt kinda creepy talking to some random kids though, so I shut off voice chat after I discovered their ages.

"Fuck off, I'm married." usually works for me. :D

However, I have the 'advantage' of having a low voice to begin with, so most times people don't realize I'm not a guy anyway unless I mention it.

OTOH, I usually only voice chat on guild raids where people know I'm female to begin with or with RL friends who obviously know I'm female.

The low voice is both my joy and my burden. /sigh

It used to be a running joke in an old guild-'Is Cal a guy or a girl?' o_O;;

Generally I've had this happen with young kids who just seem unsure of how to actually respond to a girl (being normal apparently doesn't occur to them). One of my alts is in a guild with a bunch of American guys, I'm an Aussie so I get a lot of teasing and flirting about my accent, but it's generally good natured and I've just learned to ignore it or give them shit back. Most of the time though I'll only use vent/TS when I'm familiar with the people I'm running with. I haven't actually tried out the in game system as yet. I don't actually tell people I'm a girl unless they directly ask, and I do actively avoid using chat because I'd rather it not come up as an issue, although it's not flirting I worry about (that's very easy to stop) but being taken seriously/being treated differently because I'm a girl.

"I do actively avoid using chat because I'd rather it not come up as an issue"

Don't you think this shouldn't be an issue for us. Why are we immediately shy about saying we are a girl. I know we can play as well as our male counterparts so isn't this a form of discrimination. I don't see a way that this will ever change and I think your are right, it is usually the younger males that respond that way.

Sure I think it shouldn't be an issue. Sadly that's not the reality and I'm not going to make things harder on myself just to prove a point :/

The one recent PUG I had didn't mention a thing about my obviously girly voice (really, I can't hide it one bit). But then, one guy wasn't using voice, so we mostly typed chat anyway.

It is a worry how people will react, but I'm a bit proud, too. Yeah, I'm a chick, and I've probably been playing WoW longer than you! What'sittoya? :P

I usually drop the "boyfriend" bomb relatively quickly. It can be frustrating though, because as awful as this sounds, my voice is very often described as "sexy". As in, I can do a mean impersonation of a phone sex hotline girl. Not that I do that in pugs, because then I'd just be asking for the attention.

Anyway, this whole comment makes me sound like a huge douche... the point is - drop the boyfriend/fiance/husband line and that weeds out about 60% of 'em. :)

Depends on the guild or group you're with. My current guild has several women, including two mothers in their late 30s/early 40s and a couple in college or their early 20s. The guild rocks -- it's filled with nice people who always help each other with quests, attunements and crafteds, and it absolutely wouldn't be tolerated if anyone treated the women in our guild differently because of their gender.

But I do have a problem with women who milk the fact that they're female for their benefit. A woman in my previous guild flirted with people regularly and got a raiding spot ahead of me despite absolutely awful gear -- I'm talking about a difference of 450 AP and 75+ hit rating between her Enhancement shaman and mine, and a pair of godawful green weapons that shouldn't be in any shaman's inventory, much less equipped for a Karazhan raid. Pretty much anyone who has played a Enh shaman to 70 knows weapon itemization and AP makes a massive difference in effectiveness, yet I had a GM who wouldn't give me a raiding spot simply because this woman flirted with him and the officers on Vent. That's the kind of bullshit I've seen way too much on WoW, and I blame the flirty women just as much as I do the pathetic guys who enable them.

It's an awesome spec, but criminally under-appreciated. Took me more than a month to find a guild with raiding spots and officers who understand the benefit of having Enh in their melee group, but it was worth the wait. Once a guild brings an Enhancement on a raid and sees the 30+ percent scaling DPS increase on all their melee raiders, they become converts. Plus we can off-heal in a pinch!

[info]ecto_one
2007-10-09 04:48 pm UTC (link)
Dual-wield. Although I didn't play the game pre-TBC, my understanding is that 2H's were most effective in the days when max HP was so low that a Windfury crit in PvP could kill another player instantly. Nowadays unfortunately we can't do that.

Another shaman in my guild uses a 2H, but he nerfs his DPS significantly by using it. As long as you have enough +hit and slow enough 1H weapons (2.6 speed), dual wield is the way to go. 2H gives you huge crits, but DW gives you more consistent (and higher) DPS.

Wasn't voicechat, but somehow one of our groupies managed to winkle out that I was a female and he couldn't stop telling me that I was his one true love. It was kinda funny in an harmless, teasing, over-the-top way so I just made it clear I was humoring him and let it continue. Me and another of the groupies who I found out was also a girl had a crack up time about it.

I get crap for being obviously Southern, not for being female. :) But this is with guildies, and it's good-natured teasing...everyone is always giving everyone else crap about something. I've never done the in-game voice chat yet.

And I know some girls just have a sexy voice, that's okee, but having somebody talk normaly to you and when a guy logs on the suddenly get this voice... argh.

I haven't, yet... "fortunately" bluetooth headsets don't yet work with voice chat, so if I do speak, it's with my internal mic and no doubt really crappy quality and thus with my low voice and crappy mic I am mistaken for male.

That said, if people decided to hit on me in a situation like that, I'd tell them to knock it off. If they didn't, I'd leave the group. I'm here to play, not to be practice for some guy ><

I'm not shy about letting it be known I'm female. However, I don't want to put up with asshats, so I prefer to avoid voice chat because it seems to bring out the worst in male players.

And if I were in a situation where I needed to use voice chat, I'd shut down that stupid flirty behavior immediately or leave the group. By tolerating that crap, it only encourages them to do it to the next woman.

Eh, sometimes, but I don't encourage it. I'm generally polite, so if someone is flirting, I just wave or do a shy smile. I find that many people have the chat turned off. While doing pugs, the VOIP has been some help, however, I also find that Blizz needs to work on the volume. People are having issues with the decible level and hearing others.

not to mention I cuss enough to make a drunk sailor blush

I firmly inform them that that is not appropriate, that I'm here to game, not meet boys and suggest they focus on holding aggro because my rogue is threat limited by their crappy tanking. If they continue, I start spouting feminist theory at them and then /kick them.

True story from BRD last week (on my priest. It's always worse when I'm healing):
"WTF!?! why did you kick me?"
"I suggest you read some of Gloria Steinem's works"
"what? whos she? u had no reason to kick me!!!"
"She says tanks should use shields."
"But my dps is gret!!!"
"She also said that a woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle. I believe the same holds true for priests and idiot warriors."

I haven't had any issues with it yet, but so far I've only talked in one PUG, the rest has been all guild runs. In the PUG there was another woman (who happened to be the roommate/girlfriend of another player) so I didn't feel odd at all.
And my guild has lots of women in it, including several married/cohabitating couples, so that's not an issue, either.

My sympathies to anyone who's been harassed via the voice chat (or any other kind of chat). I'm sure I'll have to deal with it eventually myself. >_< When I do, I'll quit the group and hearth rather than put up with immature weasels drooling on their mics.
