MOD POST - VERY IMPORTANT
New Rule - 3 Strikes

From this point forward, we will now be using a "3 strikes" system. When someone breaks a rule, they will get a "strike" from us. We will notify you when you get a strike via a comment. Once you get 3 strikes, you will be banned from the community. While this may sound a bit overwhelming or intimidating to you, we encourage you to relax and not worry too much about it. If you adhere to the rules, you won't get any strikes.

Every member starts with a clean slate - NO current member has any strikes.

All rules can be found very clearly on the Profile

Server Maintenance Notification

From this point forward, instead of having lots and lots of various short messages regarding server maintenance/downtime/status, the mods will be making a post whenever there is server maintenance/downtime and all discussions regarding server maintenance/downtime should be taking place via that post. This is to cut down on repeat posts/spam. Any posts made regarding server maintenance/downtime/status after that post is made will be deleted.

As part of our maintenance/downtime threads, we will be including the reminder to update your characters on the wow_ladies Database.

Our server downtime posts should not be used for Caturday. You can get your caturday fill via [info]worldofwarcraft and icanhascheezburger.com.

Tags

We encourage the members of wow_ladies to not only remember to apply appropriate tags to their post but to check the tags before they post. A lot of the posts we get here can be answered by checking the tags. Yes, we understand that means you have to potentially go through several pages of posts in the tags, but in the long run, it's faster and easier if you try to look it up yourself rather than making a whole new post regarding it.

If a question is posted that is answered in the tags, there is a strong possibility we will delete the post.

UI/Addon

While we understand this is a hot topic for a lot ofus, we encourage you to PLEASE look through the addon/mod tags, along with the UI and UI screenshot tag before posting. There is also a community specifically for mods at [info]wow_addons that can be used.

-----

We do not want people to think that we no longer want an active community. We just want to cut down on all of the duplicate posts. And because we've had issues with rules not being followed in the past, we felt that it was important to put the "3 Strikes" system into place. Some of us have had great success with this in other communities

Strikes for forgetting to use tags is kind of harsh... but I'll try to remember.

I don't tag anything :(

Oh no, not strikes for NOT tagging entries, that would be impossible and unfair. Too often there isn't a suitable tag for an entry. The strikes would be for breaking main rules like the TOS rules and the BE NICE rules.

The post deletion would come from people who refused to look up information in the tags. Some days we get the same exact question asked 3 or 4 times. That is when we would have to start looking into things.

Ah!

Thanks for clearing that up.

Otherwise I would be banned like.. in a day ;)

Oi, I'd have to ban myself over that. I'm really glad you asked the question because no matter how many times [info]pirogoeth and I re-read this we knew some things wouldn't be clarified.

The "3 Strikes" system is definitely more for the big rules. The people who call us, the mods, out in public rather then email. Or get snarky and rude with other people to the point of insults rather than a simple "I disagree for these reasons".

I love your icon.

Yeah, insults get nasty. I'm all for a happy happy environment :D

Can I get some clarification of the BE NICE rule? I understand you don't want people being jackasses to each other, but what about disagreements in general? Some folks seem to post here wanting affirmation for everything they decide to do in game, others want serious advice--and it's often difficult to determine what sort of response the OP wants unless it's someone who posts here a lot. I can just see a situation where someone gives advice in a non-confrontational manner and the OP takes it badly because they wanted affirmation and then the BE NICE rule comes into play and the original commenter looks like a jackass because they inadvertently upset the OP.

It is really, really hard to comment on posts in this community sometimes because of these different expectations from the members.

Our BE NICE rule is just about the same as all of the other forums, communities and websites. Disagreeing with someone is fine, but calling them a jackass or idiot BECAUSE of the disagreement is NOT okay, that is when we would be enforcing the rules.

This rule has been in place for several weeks and we haven't had any issues crop up regarding it in the sense of tone confusion. And you're absolutely right that it's hard to comment sometimes because we don't know if the OP is asking for real opinions (for or against) or a comforting pat on the head. The BE NICE rule would only come to play in those situations if something like the following happened...

Original Post
I can't believe my guild /gkicked me just because I said I deserved the item because I raided every week, even though I lost the roll I should have been given the item!

Reply One
Yeah, that's not fair that they /gkicked you for that, but I do agree that if you lost the roll the item should not have been given to you.

Reply two
Just because you don't have a life and can go to every single raid doesn't make you automatically deserve the item. They should have /gkicked you, you were being a stingy bitch to expect something handed to you.

---

The second reply is a perfect example of what would get a "Be nice!" mention from us. There are other ways to express opinions. Unfortunately, until we can't know if a person is just venting or really wanting support.

If a specific post has you unsure, just ask them. Or if people are taking YOUR post the wrong way and not listening to your edit or confusion, email us and we'll pop a note up.

I left out a line, I was working on two trains of thought :D. Take out that "Until" in the "Unfortunately, until we can't know..."

That helps quite a bit. I sometimes get concerned about people getting warnings/strikes because they misread the intent of someone's post and inadvertently opened a can of batshit crazy. A lot of times it's clear when someone wants a pat on the head, but sometimes it isn't--and it seems to me that the pat-on-the-head posters are the ones who are more liable to get upset at inadvertent misreadings due to the different expectations.

(Trying to be very neutral here, am probably not succeeding.)

Actually, this is exactly the type of thing I was hoping people would bring up. We want to make it clear that the strikes aren't going to be used liberally and even further, bans will be very very rare (heck, there are only a couple dozen people banned total in the community and we've been around a long time!).

Warnings and strikes aren't always going to go along with a mod reply pointing to the rules. Meaning, if someone reads the wrong meaning into someones post and replies to that wrong assumption, that would get more of a "I think you might have misunderstood the OP" reply from us, not a strike. I hope that makes sense.

We aren't going to change our moderating style, exactly. We are just putting this new policy into place because it allows us, the mods, a way to track the members that continually post snarky responses and outright break rules*.

In the end, what we are hoping this policy does is allow us to better track those people who are continually "misreading" posts to the point that it is no longer misreading, but is now just rude responses. As well as keep track of the people who flat out refuse to abide by the rules.

*(outright rule breaking example is someone posting to brag about the new epic mount they bought thanks to the quick service of a gold buying company. That would be an outright strike).

I think this is in regards to the post you made a day or so ago about a UI/Addon, and I want to say right now that we did not make mention of looking in the tags before you post and such because of you. We did it because the large number of posts made each day that can be answered by looking the tags is...well, large. We're sorry if you felt it was aimed at you specifically, but it was not. We just felt it was time people get reminded that we spent the time setting up the tags for a reason, and that is for your convenience.
