MOD POST: Contacting the mods, men in the community, new mods
Ok ladies. We've had some drama cropping up and this is our official response on it all.

Friend's Locking Entries

After discussing it with the mods, it seems none of the active mods made this change. We're not sure how it happened. It's now set so that all posts in [info]wow_ladies will be public by default - if someone wants their posts to be friend's locked, you will have to specify that.

Men in the Community

Seems alot of our members are silently uncomfortable with the idea of men in the community. This is our response to it: We are not going to stop them from joining. For one, just because someone may be male does not mean they always identify with that gender. Two, some men I know have joined because they have girlfriends/wives in the game or want to get them in the game and like seeing the women here post - it helps them identify with their partners and helps them get ideas on how to join. We're sorry if this causes any discomfort, but as long as the men keep their noses clean, we don't feel comfortable kicking them out for no real reason.

OT Posts

While we know that the members here don't just play WoW, this IS a community related to the lady gamers of World of Warcraft. Any posts regarding Starcraft or any other game - be it MMO or not - will be deleted. They belong in a community for that game or in a more general lady gamers community. Let's please try to keep this community on topic.

Contacting the Mods

If you have a concern about the community, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE e-mail us, DO NOT make a post on the community regarding it. We understand an issue alot of people had was that we weren't very timely in our replies to you and we apologize for that. Part of it is that we discuss everything via e-mail so we have to wait for the other replies from the mods and part of it is - while I know it's a huge surprise to some of you - that we're human. We make mistakes and we forget sometimes. We're all trying to be better on the response times to e-mails, you just have to be patient.

Again, please do NOT voice your concerns regarding the community in a post, but rather in an e-mail- it helps cut down on the potential for drama. Our addresses are in the userinfo of the community.

And for those of you who voiced concerns that we were just ignoring the e-mails or the drama - we never ignore e-mails, and if it seems we "ignore" the drama, it's probably because we haven't caught it (again, that dratted RL thing). If you see drama unfolding, please contact us about it and make us aware of the situation (and sometimes, we don't act immediately because we're discussing it between ourselves via e-mail).

New Mods!

After discussion, we've decided that we'd like to add 2-3 new mods for the community. This is what we're looking for in a mod:

1.) They have to be ok with men in the community - we can't assume that they're here to "spy" on us women.
2.) They have to have moderator/leadership experience.
3.) They have to know how to act under pressure - dealing with a flame war/drama can be stressful in some situations (hi) and you need to know how to handle it.
4.) They need to know how to act diplomatically - you can't go around insulting members if a comment/post of theirs needs to have some mod involvement.

If you're interested in being a mod, please e-mail your "resume" and why you want to be a mod to daughterofmedusa@yahoo.com.

---

Again, we're sorry for the latest drama and we're sorry to those who have chosen to leave the community either over it or over the idea that we were ignoring/neglecting you. We apologize if you feel that way and we're sorry if you feel it's too little, too late. We can't really go back in time to fix things, though we wish we could. All we can do now is say we're still here and we're sorry for all this.

- [info]pirogoeth,
On behalf of the [info]wow_ladies moderators.

Hey, just a suggestion around the email thing--on the community I run, we have one email address in our userinfo for folks to use to contact the mods--we all have access to it (it's through gmail). We also have a private YahooGroup that we use to discuss community issues, most emails from members or potential members end up getting forwarded to the YahooGroup so everyone can see them and whoever has the time to do so responds. It helps to streamline the process a little bit.

Running a large and popular community is hard work and I'm glad to see that the mods of this community are working on things. :)

Similarly, on [info]fanficrants, we have a post all the mods monitor on our mod only community where members can go to leave a screened comment if they have a complaint/suggestion/etc.

Another option is a closed LJ community for the mods to discuss things.

"I'm in yor comunitie, steelin' yor ideaz".

Yes, I'm a man, and in WoW Ladies. I know - I can hear the pitchforks being sharpened as we speak, but seriously, I come here to see structured and common sense debate, intelligent and reasoned posts and comments (I don't always find them, but that's why I come).

I prefer this environment to the 12 year old 'OMGZ, yoo ninja'd my epixs' comments one is more likely to find in some of the more 'mainstream' forums.

Had I wished to, I could have created a 'female' LJ but then - where would be the honesty in that?

May I make a suggestion regarding email?

When a mod gets an email and is communicating with other mods about the contents, perhaps a mail to the original sender saying, "I've read your mail and we're talking about it. We'll get back to you as soon as we can," will help people know that their concerns are being addressed? This way members don't end up waiting a long time for the full response, wondering if their email made it or not.

Other than that, great post. I support the "community for moderators" idea over a shared email address, just because sharing things like email addresses is scary to me.

Thank you for clearing up the whole male issue. My boyfriend has been wanting to read some of the posts here coz there's some good stuff here, and I've been wanting to link him things, but it's difficult when it's all friends locked and he's not a member. At the moment he logs into my account when he wants to read something or I link something, but it is nice knowing he's allowed to join and read :)

And this is absolutely the main reason why trying to screen men out (which I don't support, nor recommend) wouldn't work 100% anyway - even if we wanted it to work that way. SOs of wow_ladies readers could just lean over and read their screens.

I'd much rather let the guys join, and read/comment on their own accounts than be persona non grata in the community. Isn't that what we object to in the gaming world when it happens to us? Yeah.

I am here purely to spy on you women.

Not really.

I'm kind of a sociology buff, and this is a very social game we play. A majority of the angles I get are male-centric. Seeing the thoughts and angles here are often a sharp contrast to either mine or at least from within my perspective.

It's kind of sad that the few times I have responded to a post I feel I could contribute to, I felt a twinge of "GREAT BUT WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE??"

Completely understandable, I just got my degree in Psych/Philo/Anthropology a year ago and I used wow for my last undergrad paper in my Ethnographic Field Methods in Anthropology course.

I just love to see how people play and interact within the game-o-sphere (this includes things outside the game such as communities like this).

I'm excited to be hopefully going to grad school in the fall to work towards my Masters majoring in Anthropology with a focus in Cyber Anthro. :D

Allow me to begin by congratulating the mods on running a terrific community! I think we can all understand that every one of us is human, and thus imperfect at times.

Along those lines (and hoping fervently that I don't touch off a flame war), I have seen numerous people mention that they regard this community as a "safe place". It seems some people believe in the equation that no men = safe place, end of story. I believe that allowing men to be members of the community is acceptable, and even commendable, with the caveat that they follow the same rules of respect as the rest of us. This is a community centered around the female experience playing WoW, but that doesn't mean that a man will never have anything helpful or interesting to contribute.

There is simply no better WoW community out there. My beautiful wife told me about you ladies, I kept reading your posts and consider Wow_Ladies now the best editorial source of information about WoW.

In case she is reading this at work: I love you. Any ideas about dinner? I could make you Oyako Donburi.

I didn't even know there were guys in this community. When I joined, I thought the community info specified that you can only join if you're female (or female-identified) in real life.

I guess it does bother me that this is not a female-only community after all. This is not because I'm some sort of callous man-hater (about half my RL friends are guys, I live with two of them, I like guys just fine) - but because it's nice to be part of a female-only community dedicated to something that is still a male-dominated pursuit (gaming). Because even on the internet we are not free of gender power relations, and the stuff that generally occurs in "real life", and because there are so many male-dominated spaces that it's nice to have some places that are female-only.

I mostly play WoW with my boyfriend. We talk a lot of WoW together, read a lot of forums together, etc. But he completely understands and respects why I would want to belong to a female-only WoW community, since so much other stuff is male-dominated.

I have to add that the males in here have been well-behaved - so while I'd really much rather this was a female-only space, I'm not going to leave this community because of this. So far it remains a community for female-centric gaming experiences, and I hope this doesn't change.

Thanks for the informative post =), I enjoy the community greatly, am a wow-addicted girl that has zero problem with guys being here, or 'outsiders' viewing the entries, unless someone particularly wants their words protected that way.

Also, just wondering, what does "helps them get ideas on how to join" mean?
