Playing a Male Character
So, in a post yesterday, I mentioned that I'd been considering rolling a male draenei mage, because I so love the male draenei casting animation. Do any of you play male characters? Do you get treated differently than you do on your female characters? Though I play on an RP server, I rarely, if ever, RP and I tend to just "be myself" in party/guild chat. I am curious to know what your experiences have been or if, for the most part, there is little difference between playing male and female characters.

My natural inclination is to play female characters because throughout my gaming experiences, it was rare to even have the option of playing a female.

When I was heavy into FPS games, I played male character if I planned to connect to public servers because I was treated better/differently if I was assumed male.

WoW's my first MMO, and I have always just gravitated to the female models. I chose the features for my BF's male draenei warrior, though, so that is sorta "my" toon.

I sometimes play as a male tauren, cause I think they're adorable. I find that people cut me a little more slack when I'm playing my female draenei if I do something stupid. People in PUGs also make fun of me more if I yell at them for saying things like "fag" or making misogynist comments. When I play a female character, other players tend to be more apologetic, where as when I yell at them for those things when I'm playing a male character they brush it off and say I must be gay, and don't believe that I'm a girl.

Other than that though, I don't see much difference in how people treat me. I kind of like that I get less of the /lick type things when I'm playing a male character.

I started playing a male Blood Elf hunter with my husband, who is playing a blood elf female mage. So far, we haven't been treated especially differently than usual... although admittedly, we're only level 10 and haven't had many chances to group with anyone yet. :)

Actually most of my characters are male, and I rarely if ever get treated differently. If anything, it amounts to more fun because when I get on vent, people don't expect me to be a chick. So I can screw with people a bit, hehe.

I rolled the mage in the icon simply to a) buy him the pink dress during lunar festival and make him wear it and b) to mess with one of my guildies. Of course, he's just fun to play, so I might continue with him just on general principle.

People cut me a lot less slack and are a lot less apt to be randomly helpful when I'm on my male toon than my female one. Even my guildies, who know damn well that I'm a girl and that I play both characters will bend over backwards to help my alt and ignore my main.

Also, when we're on vent a lot of the boys just can't handle the cognitive dissonance of hearing a female voice and seeing a male toon. I think this is HILARIOUS.:)

I have male characters! The first time anyone found out my male Troll hunter was played by a woman was hilarious (I don't try to hide or proclaim it, because my genitals have nothing to do with how hard I pwn in game). I'm on an RP server, so I find it easier to play a character that no one's constantly trying to hit on or trying to rescue.

I played a male Orc Warlock till about level 14. I stopped after finding out BE's couldn't be warriors and warlock was my second choice (needless to say I have BE priest to level), but I've been thinking of seriouslly trying to level an alliance character was after playing all (save drawf) as female I was thinking of trying a male out.

My time as an Orc Warlock was well... uneventful so I didn't see a difference.

I have four male characters - Helgin (troll warrior), Hohokam (draenei paladin), Lokius (orc hunter) and Peat (dwarf paladin). All but Peat are on RP servers and I find I RP far more with them than my female characters. It adds an amount of "distance" from the character such that I have to create a personality for them rather than using my own. Even with Peat, I tend to find myself RPing with him, /flirting with the girl dwarves and /charging recklessly into battle, drinking himself into a stupor at the inn - sometimes other people will join in, despite it being a PvE server!

My main is a male character, also on an RP server and guild chat is OOC. (Thanks to Ventrilo, most of the guild now knows I'm female, but they didn't for like over a year.)

You are treated somewhat differently, in more of a 'one of the guys' sort of way. You can talk stats, gear, strategies, etc without any of the hand-kissing "m'lady" flirting courtship.

Whereas sometimes when I log onto a female character, I'll get whispered by some stranger for 'hawt cyb'. That's when the /shoo emote is handy. (Though to be fair, this has also happened on my male character, just far less often. I don't know if this is just because of my particular server.)

I do find that some people also tend to more willingly help out female characters, and give them a few items freely, whereas on my male character, I'm usually expected to just earn it on my own. Which I prefer.

So I tend to roll male characters for my particular playstyle. However, I just rolled a female Draenei shaman because they look so awesome. Frostshock! :)

I rolled a male BE pally to level and I am loving him. I find him easier to roleplay than my female troll-priest and so far I have met no strange comments. One guildie apologized lots for calling me dude when he found out I was a girl but that is all. We have lots of guys playing girl characters so noone thinks it strange that I am playing a guy. It does feel a bit strange when my friends write in guildchat "Is Rathiel finning herself again?" (We where talking about the hotness of Professor Mohinder in Heroes) when in my mind Rathiel is all male... (even if he likes the boys too).

I'm a guy (I think I've mentioned this before, if not, surprise surprise), and most of my characters are male. When I rolled up a Draenei Priest, though, I chose the female model for variety, mostly, but also because it looks like a male Draenei Priest is more likely to BEAT you back to health than anything. She's my only female character, and I notice a huge difference between how I'm treated on most of my characters and how I'm treated on her. When I'm running around on Onose, I will constantly have people go out of their way to lend me a hand, give me buffs, kill mobs for met, etc. without wanting anything in return. In contrast, on my Draenei Shaman, people usually either ignore me or do the normal "rude" things in WoW, like stealing nodes out from under me, tagging mobs just before I hit them, etc. I won't even go into the kind of idiocy I see on my main.

Female characters, whether played by men or women IRL, are definitely treated better by most players.

I dunno if one can give out anti-phermones over the interweb, but I swear I do, because 99.9% of the time, I don't get treated any differently on male or female toons. People are not generally randomly helpful to me or even pay any attention to me at all. Except once my female bankalt was hit on. So in my experience, the only difference between male and female toons is cosmetic.

Granted, I've only had a handful of male toons, and the highest level I got any of them was 22.

I'm basing this only on the gender of my toon, and not on behavior once someone knows I'm female. In that case, people usually stop swearing in front of me for a few days until they realize how much I swear, then they go back to normal.

I've only rolled female chars to date; I find them more aesthetically pleasing, I connect with them more, etc.

I don't know if what they say is true vis a vis people giving you stuff if you play a female? But my main is a female and my god has she been gifted with some nice stuff - bags, weapons, you name it.

I normally don't advertise my gender, but now and then I get pissed off and say things without thinking... which can be a little embarassing. I recall being in a battleground with one of my characters, whose name is a normal, decidedly male name. It was a low-level WSG and of course that meant it was 90% twinks and jerks. e.e Most people were hanging out mid-field and attacking anything they saw, without trying to get the flag or anything. At one point someone went "Everyone except (guy near the horde base) needs to grow a dick," and frustrated with the idiocy of these people- who were really doing nothing but complaining- I made some comment along the lines of "no thanks, don't want one." Rather than get a lot of slack from the "lol there are no gurlz on teh intarweb" crew, the guy actually sent me a tell apologizing clumsily. I guess that it never occurred to him that there might be people in there who actually did not have penises. e.e Still.. the fact that I got such a positive result-- while on a very clearly male character-- was sort of a nice surprise, hehe

My main is a Draenei Paladin right now, and yeah, he's a he. (I loev the Draenei boys. So jolly and cheerful and adorable. /squee) I've got a lot of male characters. Trolls and Orcs and Dwarves and Tauren oh my. I don't really get treated any differently - then again when I'm on my female characters I've not gotten any special treatment (not even free stuff. D: I really gotta try rollin' a Night Elf girl as an experiment).

Oddly, the main examples of how my female main and my male alts are treated differently seem a bit...backwards. On my female, I tend to be treated better by other women, but basically the same by men. On the male I play most... well, I haven't had him for long, but the first time I stepped foot into Stormwind a stripped-down level 2 female mage /whispered me to offer a lapdance for 1g. O_o

I also get more buffs on my female, but I think that's because she buffs first (my girl's a pally, while my guys are a warrior and a hunter.)

I play both genders... It's funny... I actually identify more with my males than I do with my females (even though I'm a straight female). I get more into the characters of my guys, though... especially my hottie Troll Warrior.

I get treated differently on my female toons, though... I don't know if I put out "female" vibes while on my girls, or what, but I get mistaken for a guy all the time on my males (and sometimes on my females if I'm feeling particularly grumpy). ::shrugs:: Ah well.

I have a male character who is my main. He's on a PvE server, so I don't RP too much. He's a troll mage (Razzoo, I posted screenshots of him on his new chicken mount) and I like playing him WAY more than any other character I've played, even though I don't get to roleplay often. Most people in the guild know I'm a chick, and my (male) fiance plays a female undead, so they like to tell us how confusing we are. Sometimes I get some baffled guys who ask me why I play a guy. I wasn't attracted to the gender so much as the "whole package" -- male trolls are just awesome!

Oddly, I've been hit on far more often (by strangers) whenever I play a male troll than anything else I've played.

I recently rolled a draenei male shaman, and this is the first male character I've had in my years on WoW. I have noticed that people are notably more abrupt and rude with him; being if not combative, then at least more abrasive in their dealings with him than with my female draenei paladin who is about the same level (I'm levelling them concurrently).

Mind you, people seem to /dance with me a lot more, too. *grin*

OK, so I have one male character, a BElf that is lvl 12, mostly played him on the first couple of days after the BC release, before concentrating on other characters, so I can't say I have very much experience of playing the other gender, but I don't feel I'm being treated in a special way just because I'm playing female toons. I've never gotten free stuff (even on my half-naked NElf chick (I've tried to cover her up in tabard + shirt, but her outfit is still revealing as hell XD)) or have people run up and help me, I occationally get a heal when I'm low on health from people passing by, but most of the time they mind their own business and let me die. Chivalry is clearly dead. :P

The only toon I've been treated differently on was a Gnome, I levelled her with a friend, we had matching names and looked identical apart from the haircolours, and were basically adorable. Had people coming up to us saying hi, just because, or asking us if we were friends, we got whispers with "God you guys are hot!" and even had a male human performing a striptease for us in Stormwind... It was, um, interesting... XD Lol, oh yeah, and we had some random human in Elwynn pointing us and saying to their friend (in /say) "OMG look! Midgets!!"

Otherwise people leave me rather alone, I only get tells from people who a) wants me to run instances with them, or b) want to sell gold.

I find that the biggest difference in how people treat me comes not from my characters' genders, but from the class and race; my gnome mage is treated much differently than my night elf priest! Horde spare my gnome and even help her, whereas it seems like they go out of their way to pick on my night elf priest... in both cases, it's usually a rogue either being helpful or a jerk.

Once I did have a pally (on a non-RP sever)randomly walk up to my priest and /say "Forgive me father for I have sinned." He told me his sin was killing Horde, but I assured him it wasn't a sin at all! :D

The only time I'm treated differently due to gender is when people find out I'm a woman. My first few days playing I was propositioned by a man playing a 60 pally: he seemingly randomly message me with a polite greeting, then asked my gender. When I told him I was female, he offered to come help me level and give me gold wherever and whenever if I would either talk with him over Vent or set up a web-cam so he could see the real ME. It was very creepy, so of course I declined. I wasn't even level ten yet!

The only reason my main is actually female is at the request of my fiance, and I wanted to try something different anyway, so why not? My main in GW was a male. Eventually, though, I did roll me my male baby pally as a primary alt, and I've been slogging through levelling with each of them. I also have a male Draenei shaman.

I have been propositioned both on my main, a female NE hunter, and my baby pally. I have to say the propositioning of my baby pally was far more entertaining. I have noticed a few differences. If I am grouped, people almost ALWAYS ask me to join the group if I am on the hunter. I am usually never the group leader, so I tell them to ask whoever is. I have also found that, on my male toons, there's a slightly larger chance of getting heckled and being the subject of name-calling if I happen not to want to duel. People also seem a touch less willing to say "please" and "thank you" to baby pally.

Right now I technically have two "mains" (given the amount of time I spend on both of them there really isn't an alternate) a female tauren druid and a male troll priest. I don't think I'm treated differently though non-guildies get confused when my guildmates use female pronouns or when they hear me on TS since I apprently sound super girly.
I know that I roleplay them differently, the female toon is closer to my own personality while the boy is a little more of an airhead.
