A growing scam I'm seeing more of lately
Lately, level 1's have been offering to sell Trading Card Game in-game codes with the intention of never following through. Usually it's either a Spectral Tiger or a Riding Turtle, but I've seen other items used.
Generally, they'll offer the item at around 1000g or less, which makes it very tempting for a lot of people. They'll get at least 2-12 people interested, get the gold, then give the interested party a fake, non-working code. By the time you've pulled up the website to redeem the code, and/or gotten to Booty Bay, they're long gone. Usually at the point they give you the code, they mail the gold off to their main, log off and delete the character, thinking this makes them safe from a GM finding them later. It does not.
If this happens to you, file a ticket with a GM immediately. It will take them a few days to a week or longer to get back to you, because they'll have to escalate the ticket for a Senior GM to investigate, but so far everyone I know that this has happened to has gotten their gold back.
I suspect the reason this scam is so popular suddenly is because of the fact it does take awhile for the GMs to refund your gold, so the scammer thinks they've gotten away with it, and then advise other like-minded people that it works. "Hey man, I just got 4000g in one day!" etc.
Some tips to avoid this happening to you:
1. If the person is selling the code from a level 1 alt, it's 99% likely it's a scammer.
2. If the person is insistent that you pay the entire amount up front, it's not a good sign.
3. If they try to rush you into making a choice on the spot, it's a bad sign. "Look, my parents are yelling at me to come get dinner." "I've got 3 other people interested...you want this or not?"
Basically, a legit seller will likely be doing so on a higher leveled character, and be more likely to be willing to go half up front, and half once you redeem the code. Granted, these aren't sure ways to weed out the fraudulent sellers, but it can help.
It is not against the Terms of Service for a player to sell the card codes in-game for in-game gold, but it is very easy to get scammed in this manner. Please, if you have any doubt that the seller isn't 100% legit, then don't go for it. But worst case, you CAN get your gold back, and I suspect the scammer will get punished for it.
So please be on the lookout, and keep an eye on any friends or loved ones who are tempted by these offers, and take as many precautions as you can, or just don't do it.
